Karateka shine on international stage
For a welcome change, local karateka to not have to travel too far to compete against some of the top athletes in the country. These karateka, from WKF Ugu Karate, recently took part in the AUSC UFAK Region South Karate Championships. The karateka were fortunate that the competition was held closer to home in Durban so the several athletes who qualified were able to attend. It was held from May 23 to 25.
The competition was tough and medals hard-fought for. Still, the South Coasters performed well and helped South Africa in obtaining the highest medal count at the tournament. Medals went to Tyler Hogan (bronze senior male kata), Ilhaam Amod (participation), Teighlon Fynn (silver 16/17 kumite), Miguel Gous (bronze cadet kumite), Neriah Peeriyilal (bronze 10/11 kumite), Tyrese Faro (silver cadet kumite), Tyler Gous (gold 12/13 kumite), Drishti Duki (participation) and Sarah Sahli (gold 12/13 kumite).
Ugu Karate chairperson Coenie Vrey said the hard work had certainly paid off for the athletes. 'They are commended on their excellent achievements in representing the region on an international stage,' he said.
