Six and Out: Dewald Brevis' promising ODI debut ends in two balls against Travis Head

South Africa's young batting sensation Dewald Brevis ensured his ODI debut would be unforgettable. Facing Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series at Cazaly's Stadium, Cairns, on Tuesday, August 19, Brevis made a stunning entry—smashing the very first ball off Travis Head he faced for a towering six. With a crisp back-foot punch straight down the ground, the ball sailed over long-on, announcing his arrival in it was Head who cut short his entertaining entry in the 50-over format. On just his second ball, Brevis went for another big one. This time Head tossed it up outside off, tempting Brevis to attempt another ambitious shot. Brevis swung hard, but only managed to connect with the toe end of the vs South Africa, 1st ODI Updates The ball hung in the air and fell just short of clearing the rope. Alex Carey, positioned at long-on, kept his calm and pouched it safely. From six to out in the space of two deliveries, Brevis' ODI debut was over almost as quickly as it Brevis hit a six off the first ball... out the next!#AUSvSA (@cricketcomau) August 19, 2025Back in 2008 against Bangladesh, South Africa's right arm pacer Johann Louw, in his second ODI appearance and first appearance with the bat in his career, made the most of his first batting outing as he opened his account with a Brevis in prime formJust last week, in the second T20I against Australia in Darwin, Brevis lit up the night with a sensational 41-ball century, thereby becoming the youngest South African to score a T20I hundred. Though Australia went on to win the T20 series 2-1, Brevis' hundred was the biggest talking point of the young star's exploits haven't gone unnoticed in the ICC rankings either. Brevis has jumped an incredible 80 spots in the T20I batting charts, now sitting at No. 21 with 614 rating points to his back in the Indian Premier League 2025, Brevis was in the headlines too. Chennai Super Kings signed him as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh during the 2025 season, and he made full use of the opportunity, scoring 225 runs from 6 matches at a strike-rate of 180.- EndsMust Watch

WATCH: Travis Head accounts for bizarre run out of Prenelan Subrayen in 1st AUS vs SA ODI

Australia's Travis Head accounted for a bizarre yet brilliant run out of South Africa's Prenelan Subrayen in the 1st ODI between the two teams at Cairns. In the 49th over, Head was bowling to Wiaan Mulder with Subrayen at the non-striker's end. In the last ball of the over, Mulder stepped out down the track and hit a shot right back at Head who managed to flick the ball back onto the stumps at the non-striker's end with his hand. Subrayen who had his bat in the air when the bails lit up, had no choice but to return back to the dug out. Head finished his spell with 4 wickets even as South Africa managed to post a formidable 296/8 in their allotted 50 overs. 'I don't know,' said Head when he was asked if he knew he would be bowling so much in the match. 'It was probably in the bingo card this morning, the wicket was a bit slow and they perhaps needed my spin. Looks like a slow wicket, so the batting PP will be the time to score, me and Mitch must start well, the older ball could be a bit tougher to score runs, need to build partnerships and chase this score down,' he added. OH MY GOODNESS HOW HAS TRAVIS HEAD DONE THAT! @BKTtires | #PlayoftheDay | #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 19, 2025 Earlier, pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out with an ankle injury in a major setback for South Africa just as the three-game ODI series got underway against Australia on Tuesday. The Australians, coming off a 2-1 win in the T20 series, won the toss and elected to field in Cairns to start the one-day international portion of the tour. This is the first ODI between the teams since Australia beat South Africa in the 2023 World Cup semifinals. Their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was washed out. The 30-year-old Rabada underwent scans on Monday which confirmed inflammation in his right ankle. Rabada will stay with the team in Australia and undergo rehabilitation. Kewena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in last week's T20 series, replaced Rabada in the squad but was left out of the playing XI for the first ODI.

Dewald Brevis Joins Elite List After Hitting Six On First Ball Of His ODI Career

Last Updated: Brevis came out to bat at No. 6 for South Africa in his first-ever ODI match and scored six on the first ball he faced. 22-year-old Dewald Brevis came out to bat at No. 6 for South Africa in his first-ever ODI match on Tuesday (August 19), and the right-handed batter opened his account by hitting a six on the first ball he faced. On the third ball of the 41st over of South Africa's innings of the match taking place at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns against Australia, Brevis took an aerial route against Travis Head and added six runs to his and his team's tally by hitting a big shot down the ground. On the next ball he tried to play a similar shot once again, but this time he failed to clear the boundary rope and got out. Dewald Brevis hit a six off the first ball… out the next! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 19, 2025 The six on the first ball of his ODI career helped Brevis join an elite list. He became only the second South African cricketer ever to hit six on the first ball of his ODI career. Johann Louw was the only other South African to hit six on the first ball of his ODI career. In his second match for the South African team, Louw got a chance to bat at No. 9 against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom on November 7, 2008, and he smacked Shakib Al Hasan on the first ball he faced. On the second ball as well, Louw hammered a six and followed it up with a four on the third ball. view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 14:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Dewald and dew a potential Aussie headache in ODIs

The dew and a bloke dubbed 'Baby AB' loom as Australia's two biggest obstacles when their three-match ODI series against South Africa gets underway in Cairns on Tuesday. Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 62 off 36 balls in the deciding game three of the T20 series helped Australia wrap up a 2-1 victory in that format on Saturday night. Maxwell hit the game-winning four with the penultimate delivery to secure the thrilling two-wicket victory in Cairns. It was a memorable night out in Cairns for Glenn Maxwell! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 17, 2025 But it wasn't the only talking point to come out of the match, with the dew and the explosive hitting from South African rising star Dewald Brevis also notable. Brevis followed up his unbeaten 125 off 56 balls in game two with a thumping 53 off 26 balls in game three, with the 22-year-old striking Aaron Hardie for four consecutive sixes. The man dubbed 'Baby AB' in reference to South African great AB de Villiers looks set to be handed his ODI debut for Tuesday's series opener to give him a chance to inflict more pain on the Aussies. The dewy outfield in Cairns also wreaked havoc - mostly for the South Africans given they had to bowl second. At the beginning of the crucial 18th over and with Australia still requiring 27 runs for victory, South African paceman Kagiso Rabada unleashed a beamer that flew more than a metre above Maxwell's head and through to the wicketkeeper without bouncing. Rabada looked at his hand in disbelief immediately after the mishap, and his subsequent free hit was struck for six by Maxwell as Australia set sail for victory. Dew was also an issue in Darwin at the start of the T20 series and it could be a factor yet again for the ODI opener at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns on Tuesday. Australia captain Mitch Marsh, who has elected to bowl first in all 20 of his coin toss wins across ODIs and T20 internationals, is aware of the dew factor. "We saw the ball get really soft in Darwin," Marsh said on Monday. "Playing with dew is not something we're used to in Australia, so that's been a challenge for us. "Hopefully there's not too much dew and it's an even ball game." Mitch Marsh has won the coin toss 20 times as the Australian skipper and chosen to bowl every single time 😱Preview the #AUSvSA ODI series: — (@cricketcomau) August 18, 2025 Games two and three of the ODI series will be played at the recently refurbished Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. Australia's most recent ODI match was their semi-final loss to India at the Champions Trophy in March. Maxwell and Steve Smith have since retired from the format, Spencer Johnson and Matt Short are currently injured, while Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sean Abbott and Tanveer Sangha haven't been selected for the upcoming ODI series. With the T20s out of the way, South Africa have welcomed in captain Temba Bavuma, veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj and recent Test triple-centurion Wiaan Mulder, as well as top-order batters Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi. Marsh is captaining the Australian side in the ODIs due to the absence of Pat Cummins, who is busy preparing for this summer's Ashes series. Despite the euphoria of the T20 series win, Australia's players have quickly reset their focus for the ODIs. "We start the series fresh, we start the series 0-0," Marsh said. "We know these shorter series it's really important to get off to a (fast) start, so hopefully that's the case tomorrow."

Watch: Fan Escapes Serious Injury While Trying To Catch Dewald Brevis' Massive Six

It was a narrow escape for a fan during Australia vs South Africa 3rd T20I at Cazaly's Stadium, Cairns on Saturday. In an attempt to take a catch outside the boundary rope, the fan crashed into a fence and fell abruptly on the ground. It happened when South Africa batter Dewald Brevis hit a massive six. The ball went really high in the air and the fan attempted to take the catch. He ended up smashing himself on the fence and then fell down. To the fan's good luck, there was no serious injury as he quickly stood up and starting walking. The video of the incident is going viral on social media. Watch it here: Spare a thought for this guy who tried to take a catch in the crowd and went BANG into the fence! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 16, 2025 Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten half-century led Australia to a sensational two-wicket win over South Africa in the final T20 and clinched the series 2-1 on Saturday. With four needed off the final two balls, Maxwell reverse swiped Lungi Ngidi to third and stayed unbeaten on 62 off 36 balls as Australia reached 173-8 and denied South Africa its maiden T20 series win in Australia. Young T20 batting sensation Dewald Brevis had earlier made 53 off 26 balls that featured four sixes in one over off Aaron Hardie before Australia pulled back nicely and restricted the Proteas at 172-7. Both teams observed a minute of silence before the game and paid tribute to former Australia captain and coach Bob Simpson, who died at the age of 89. Captain Mitchell Marsh (54), who won the toss and elected to chase, and Travis Head had provided Australia a strong start of 66-1 in eight overs but South Africa stormed back with four wickets in four overs. Head couldn't capitalize on an opportunity when South Africa skipper Aiden Markram couldn't hold onto a tough return catch but the left-handed Head spooned an easy catch to short fine leg in the same over. Josh Inglis recovered from illness after missing out the last game but was clean bowled by Corbin Bosch off the first ball he faced. But Kwena Maphaka dealt a twin blow when both Marsh and Cameron Green couldn't clear the fielders in the outfield as Australia slipped to 88-4 in the 11th over. Experienced fast bowler Kagiso Rabada then removed Tim David and Hardie in one over as Australia further slipped to 122-6 before Maxwell farmed the strike and shielded Ben Dwarshuis from the South African pacers. Dwarshuis contributed just 1 off six balls in a partnership of 41 with Maxwell as the power-hitter didn't let the asking rate shoot up. With 12 needed off the last two overs, Bosch once again turned the game around with the wickets of Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis off successive balls before Maxwell sealed the game by smashing two boundaries. "It was a little bit nerve wracking," Maxwell said after hitting eight fours and two sixes in his player-of-the-match knock. "When we lost a couple of wickets in a row, Corbin Bosch bowled a brilliant over to sort of keep the run rate near 9 or 10 ... and I probably had to do the majority of the striking, but it was it was nice to get a couple out of the middle (of the bat) right near the end." Earlier, Brevis' dismissal in the 12th over proved crucial for South Africa when Maxwell plucked a stunning diving catch at wide mid-on to end another blistering knock from a 22-year-old batter as the Proteas could add further 62 off the final 50 balls. Brevis hit six sixes and raised his half-century off just 22 balls when he smacked Hardie for four consecutive sixes before he was undone by Ellis' short ball and Maxwell took a blinder.
