Schumer warns Trump on Iran: ‘No side deals'

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday warned President Trump not to sign a watered down nuclear deal with Iran. Officials within the Trump administration previously suggested that Iran would not be allowed to enrich uranium under a proposed agreement, but new reports say the nuclear deal would allow the country to enrich a limited low-level uranium for a period of time. Low-enriched uranium is used in power plants, while highly enriched uranium is used for nuclear weapons. 'If TACO Trump is already folding on Iran, the American people need to know about it. No side deals,' Schumer said of the proposal in a video posted on the social media platform X. The lawmaker used the new 'TACO' term coined on Wall Street which stands for 'Trump Always Chickens Out' to describe the leader's shifting perspective amid negotiations. Schumer alleged in his Tuesday post that the president was hammering out a private deal with Iran that accounts for less restrictions and dampers the traditional U.S. stance on nuclear weapon development. 'When it comes to negotiating with the terrorist government of Iran, Trump's all over the lot. One day he sounds tough, the next day he's backing off. And now, all of a sudden, we find out that [special envoy Steve] Witkoff and [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio are negotiating a secret side deal with Iran,' Schumer said. 'What kind of bull is this? They're going to sound tough in public and then have a side deal that lets Iran get away with everything? That's outrageous,' he added. 'We need to make that side deal public. Any side deal should be before Congress and, most importantly, the American people.' Despite the new reporting from Axios, Trump maintains that Iran will not be allowed to enrich uranium under any circumstances. 'The AUTOPEN should have stopped Iran a long time ago from 'enriching.' Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM,' Trump wrote in a Monday Truth Social post. The Trump administration has been engaged in talks with Iran for weeks regarding the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump claims U.S. won't let Iran enrich uranium under nuclear deal

President Trump claimed Monday that the U.S. won't allow Iran to enrich uranium under a potential nuclear deal. Why it matters: Trump's claim contradicts the proposal his envoy Steve Witkoff made to Iran on Saturday, the details of which were reported by Axios on Monday. The question is whether Trump will stick to that red line or show more flexibility to secure a deal than his statement suggests. What they're saying:"The AUTOPEN should have stopped Iran a long time ago from "enriching." Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had both also publicly committed to zero enrichment prior to Witkoff's proposal. Iran has consistently said it won't sign any deal that doesn't allow enrichment for civilian purposes. Driving the news: Two sources with direct knowledge of the U.S. proposal told Axios it would allow limited low-level uranium enrichment on Iranian soil for a to-be-determined period of time. Witkoff's offer also does not call for the full dismantlement of Iran's nuclear facilities. The White House did not deny any of the details of the proposal described to Axios. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that "out of respect for the ongoing deal, the Administration will not comment on details of the proposal to the media." Axios' report on Witkoff's proposal sparked immediate alarm among Iran hawks in Washington and in Israel, before Trump himself weighed in. Iran hasn't commented on the specifics of the proposal, but said it still has questions about when and how the U.S. would lift sanctions if a deal is reached, something the U.S. proposal does not spell out in detail.

Trump rips ‘hapless and cognitively impaired' Biden after Hur audio released

President Trump on Saturday blasted his predecessor after leaked audio showed former President Biden struggling during a 2023 interview with then-special counsel Robert Hur about classified documents found at his private residence. Trump also leaned into his criticism of Biden's use of an autopen in his latest rebuke. 'Whoever had control of the 'AUTOPEN' is looking to be a bigger and bigger scandal by the moment,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, while leaning into his unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 election was stolen. 'It is a major part of the real crime THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2020 WAS RIGGED AND STOLEN!' 'Millions and millions of people knew that, but the Radical Left Democrats waged a campaign of inoculation and innocence like none that had ever been waged before,' he added. The president's early morning rant came as Axios released full audio from the first day of Hur's questioning. The outlet had released a clip the night before, which showed Biden seemingly unable to recall dates related to his time as vice president, his son Beau's death and when Trump was first elected to serve in the White House. The special counsel ultimately found that while Biden 'willfully' retained the classified documents, the jury would likely see him as an 'elderly man with a poor memory.' No charges were brought against the president, and the Justice Department later issued a transcript of the conversation but pushed back against requests for the audio. Trump on Friday said any official release of audio would be up to Attorney General Pam Bondi. The president also took a swing at lawmakers who sat on the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol in his weekend social media post. 'THIS IS WHY THE UNSELECT COMMITTEE OF POLITICAL THUGS, WHO WERE GIVEN A FULL AND COMPLETE PARDON BY THE PERSON WHO WIELDED THE NOW ILLEGALLY USED AUTOPEN, DELETED AND DESTROYED ALL EVIDENCE AND INFORMATION FROM THEIR CORRUPT AND VICIOUS WITCH HUNT AGAINST ME, AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE, WHOSE LIVES WERE COMPLETELY SHATTERED AND DESTROYED BY THIS HISTORICALLY CRIMINAL EVENT,' he wrote Saturday. 'Remember, it all began with DIRTY COP James Comey, [former President] Obama, a hapless and cognitively impaired Sleepy Joe Biden, and my now very famous ACCUSATION that, 'THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN!' Trump continued. 'Whoever had control of the Autopen is just the beginning.' The president concluded in the post, 'THE FIGHT HAS JUST BEGUN!!!' Biden, just hours before he left office, issued a slew of pardons to members of the House Jan. 6 select committee, former White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci and ex-Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley — all vocal critics of Trump. In March, Trump claimed the clemencies were 'void' because they were signed with an autopen. He argued that Biden didn't even know about them. The former president has pushed back on the argument, telling ABC's 'The View' earlier this month that the claims were 'vacant.' Questions around Biden's mental fitness proved to be a major road bump in his bid for reelection. Following a disastrous debate last June against Trump, he was pressured by many Democrats to step aside. He later withdrew from the race and endorsed former Vice President Harris to run instead.
