State working on new AVGC-XR policy, aims to attract Hollywood studios
In a move to position itself as a global hub for digital creativity, the State government is working on introducing the AVGC-XR (animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality) policy to unlock its potential in the $531 billion global industry by 2030. If implemented effectively, it will position the State alongside Maharashtra (Mumbai & Pune), Karnataka (Bengaluru), Telangana (Hyderabad), and Madhya Pradesh leaders in the AVGC-XR landscape in India. If implemented correctly, the State will be able to attract Hollywood studios to outsource technical components of their production to the State. Representatives from APDTI Network and the Andhra Pradesh Vfx Animation Gaming Association have already met with State officials to highlight the critical need for this unique AVGC-XR policy. A senior official at the Secretariat told The Hindu: 'To harness the potential of the youth of our State, the government is currently considering the possibility of introducing this new AVGC-XR policy like an IT policy. A formal meeting was held with stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, for their suggestions. The draft is almost ready. We are likely to hold a workshop with stakeholders from these sectors. After corrections and feedback, we will formally announce the policy.' APDTI Network Director, Sreedhar Kosaraju one of the representatives who held discussion with the government on the policy to attract global players (studios, hardware manufacturers, research and development centres), said, 'The policy aims to attract AVGC-XR companies to the State, increase local employment opportunities, retain creative talent (currently migrating to Hyderabad and Bengaluru), and strengthen AP's media and entertainment ecosystem.' Presently, 15% of AVGC-XR CEOs in India are from Andhra Pradesh, and thousands of Andhra-origin professionals power top studios across India, including those working in the AVGC industry in Hyderabad. Mr. Sreedhar Kosaraju said: 'Our State is competitive as it has a 30-40% cost advantage over Hyderabad and Bengaluru. If the government implements the policy perfectly, we will work to retain indigenous talent.' Additionally, we have urged the government to prioritise the creation of an AVGC/gaming corridor in Visakhapatnam to accelerate this growth. We have also sought subsidies on infrastructure for this sector as the setup is costlier than the infrastructure required by IT companies,' Sreedhar opined.

Centre announces premier institute for creative technology modelled after IIT, IIM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated Rs 400 crore for the establishment of IICT. The Maharashtra government has provided ten acres of land at Mumbai Film City for the institute's permanent campus. However, the project will initially commence from a state government facility at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. 'This is a major leap towards empowering India's AVGC-XR ecosystem,' said the Union Minister, emphasizing that India has the potential to become a global leader in media and entertainment. He added that IICT is poised to become a premier institution in its field, just as IITs and IIMs have become benchmarks in technology and management education. The minister noted that IICT would follow the same framework as IITs and IIMs to evolve into a world-class hub for education and training in the AVGC-XR sector. 'We've initiated something truly novel in the global film and entertainment space, aligned with the Prime Minister's vision that India can take the global lead in media and entertainment,' he stated. The minister also thanked the industry partners and their leadership teams for expressing their willingness to collaborate. 'They will help build this institution and support its long-term growth. I hope IICT grows into a major educational infrastructure for the AVGC-XR sector,' he added. The announcement event was attended by members of the IICT Board and Governing Council, including Ashish Kulkarni, Biren Ghosh, Manvendra Shukul, Munjal Shroff, Chaitanya Chinchlikar, and Subhash Sapru. The executive team includes Dr. Vishwas Deoskar (CEO), Ninad Raikar (COO), and Shweta Verma (Marketing Lead). During the session, IICT representatives and industry partners exchanged Letters of Intent (LoIs), marking the formal launch of collaborative efforts to advance the AVGC-XR ecosystem in India. The institute will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including virtual production setups, immersive studios, animation and gaming labs, editing and sound suites, and smart classrooms. The second phase will be developed over a 10-acre campus at Film City in Goregaon. To ensure decentralised access, the government also plans to establish regional centres across India in subsequent phases. IICT will focus on training, incubation, innovation, research and development, as well as policy-making—creating extensive opportunities for aspiring creators, professionals, and entrepreneurs in the creative technology space.

Google, Apple, Microsoft Will Help While addressing the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit in Mumbai on Thursday, Minister Vaishnav stated that PM Modi has cleared Rs 400 crore for establishing IICT while the land has been provided by the Maharashtra government. 'Global tech giants like NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Star India, Meta, and Adobe are collaborating to make IICT a world-class institute,' Vaishnav said. Where Will IICT Campus Be Built The Indian Institute of Cinema Technology (IICT) will initially operate from Mumbai's NFDC building, featuring advanced facilities such as gaming and animation labs, editing suites, virtual production capabilities, and smart classrooms. Future expansion plans include a larger campus in Goregaon's Film City and the establishment of regional IICT branches.

Day 2 of WAVES 2025 saw Kareena Kapoor gracing the event with her presence as she shared the stage with Karan Johar and Vijay Deverakonda. Taking to her Instagram, Kareena Kapoor shared a series of pictures of her OOTD. The actor opted for a stunning blue floral saree that looked no less than a love letter to summer.
