RI to double as Cape Cod in M. Night Shaymalan film

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The supernatural romantic thriller that will be filmed entirely in the Ocean State actually takes place on Cape Cod. Academy Award-nominated writer and director M. Night Shyamalan teamed up with New York Times best-selling author Nicholas Sparks to create an original love story with a supernatural twist. Sparks, who's best known for 'The Notebook' and 'A Walk to Remember,' recently unveiled the plot of his new novel, which will share a narrative with Shaymalan's screenplay. The novel 'Remain' follows New York architect Tate Donavan to Cape Cod as he plans to design his best friend's summer home. Donovan is also looking for a fresh start after being discharged from a psychiatric facility, where he was treated for acute depression following the death of his sister. He eventually meets a woman named Wren at the bed-and-breakfast where he's staying who challenges 'every assumption he has about his logical and controlled world.' RELATED: M. Night Shyamalan, Jake Gyllenhaal movie to film in RI 'Tate and Wren find themselves forging an immediate connection, one that neither has ever experienced before,' Sparks explained. 'But Tate gradually discovers that below the surface of Wren's idyllic small-town life, hatred, jealousy, and greed are festering, threatening their fragile relationship just as it begins to blossom.' 'A story about the power of transcendent emotion, Remain asks us all: Can love set us free not only from our greatest sorrows, but even from the boundaries of life and death?' he questioned. Sparks' new novel, which will officially hit store shelves on Oct. 7, is available for pre-order online. Remain will be Sparks' 25th novel, and will also be the 12th to have a film adaptation. Shaymalan's film is slated to begin filming this summer and will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor. It's unclear whether the film will share the same name as Sparks' novel, and a release date for it has not yet been announced. UWGB honors Alex Smolecki with 26.59-mile walk to Lambeau Field

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – At sunrise, supporters gathered at the Kress Events Center to take part in 'A Walk to Remember Alex Smolecki': a 26.59-mile tribute to the UW-Green Bay swimmer who tragically passed away in February. The route stretched from campus to Lambeau Field and back. While some completed the full marathon distance, many joined for portions of the walk, united by a shared mission, honoring Alex's adventurous spirit and determination. 'Why we are doing this walk is because Alex had a spirit of zest for adventure and he never backed down from any challenge,' said his sister, Magda Maslach. Newsmaker Sunday: 'Ballerina on the Battlefield,' two years later Smolecki, a junior mechanical engineering student and member of the men's swim and dive team, was known for pushing boundaries, whether that meant diving into workouts, running a marathon solo after it was canceled due to wildfires, or spontaneously flying to Japan to hike Mount Fuji. 'When he passed away tragically, we decided this is not it,' Maslach said. 'We're going to keep his legacy going and we invite everybody, challenge yourself. Grief is such a heavy thing.' The walk marked the launch of #AleksFunniestChallenge, a campaign organized by Smolecki's family encouraging people to take on one physically challenging activity each month in 2025. The name comes from Alex's Instagram handle, which friends and family continue to use as a tribute page. 'Just move. Go move. Do the things you don't want to do 'cause that's what Alex did. He just hopped in there and went for it,' Maslach said. Alex's brother, Sebastien Smolecki, led the walk on Sunday. He said starting at the Kress made the event even more personal; it's where he and Alex trained together for swim team workouts. 'We did a few laps around campus, then went to Lambeau and back,' Sebastien said. 'It ended up being about 26 miles in a marathon. Even though he's not here, he's still impacting all these people, which is awesome.' Participants who started the walk at the Kress received commemorative t-shirts, but others joined from afar. Maslach, who lives in Colorado, hosts a weekly challenge at Red Rocks every Saturday. 'Can't find at any other': Vandervest Harley Davidson preparing for NFL Draft inside and out She plans to post monthly physical challenges on the memorial page for others to follow at their own pace. 'I just miss him,' Sebastien added. 'I wish he was here. But now we just carry his legacy on.' For those who couldn't attend the walk, the family encouraged supporters to walk or run any distance throughout the week and post on social media using the hashtag #AleksFunniestChallenge. "A Walk To Remember" Reboot in Works

Yara Sameh Monarch Media has acquired the rights to "A Walk to Remember", the seminal early aughts coming-of-age romance from Nicholas Sparks, with plans to develop a reboot alongside the original film's producers Denise Di Novi and Hunt Lowry. An enduringly popular bestseller published in 1999, "A Walk to Remember" follows a rebellious high school senior who falls for a quiet, faith-driven girl after being forced to participate in a school play, discovering the transformative power of love, forgiveness and the beauty of living each day with purpose. Famously, Shane West and Mandy Moore broke out with their turns in the original 2002 film adaptation from Warner Bros. While the Adam Shankman film made less than $48 million in theaters, it remains one of the most popular titles in the modern rom-com canon to this day. The full producing team on the reboot will include Steve Barnett, Alan Powell and Vicky Patel for Monarch Media, Di Novi and Margaret French-Isaac for Di Novi Pictures, and Lowry and Patty Reed for Roserock Films. ''A Walk to Remember' has endured as a beloved coming-of-age drama, captivating audiences with its heartfelt story of young love, personal growth and the power of faith for decades,' Barnett said. 'We could not be more excited to bring a new version of Nicholas Sparks' timeless story to audiences and are particularly thrilled to work alongside the original film's producers, Denise and Hunt.' Also currently prepping a sequel to "Practical Magic", Di Novi said, 'I am so grateful to Steve and Monarch Media for giving all of us the opportunity to bring this enduring and inspirational story of faith, hope and love to a new generation, all qualities we need now more than ever.' 'I'm delighted to be bringing this timeless story to a new generation of moviegoers, and it's great to be working with Denise again and the Monarch team,' said Lowry, who also produced "What a Girl Wants" alongside Di Novi. One of the world's most beloved storytellers, Sparks has made the New York Times bestseller list with each of his books, with over 130 million copies sold worldwide, in more than 50 languages, including over 92 million copies in the U.S. alone. While numerous films based on his work have been mounted, the other most famous title would have to be "The Notebook", the romance adapted into the 2004 film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Sparks' latest novel, "Counting Miracles", debuted last fall and is being adapted for film by Amazon. Up next for the author is a supernatural romantic thriller based on an original story co-created with M. Night Shyamalan. He and Shyamalan are independently writing a screenplay and a novel, respectively, based on the same original love story, with Jake Gyllenhaal on board to star in the film. Monarch Media is known for producing the acclaimed Richard Linklater film Hit Man, starring Glen Powell, and the action thriller "Valiant One", starring Chase Stokes. Currently, the company is in production on "Tangles", an animated feature starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Abbi Jacobson and Seth Rogen. They also recently attached writer Michael Notarile to dark cannabis con comedy, "Bune".

Mandy Moore blasts Amazon for delivering a package to her in-laws' burned-down home

Mandy Moore had some words for an Amazon delivery person who dropped off a package at her family's burned-down home in Altadena: "Do better." The "This Is Us" star blasted the company for delivering the parcel in the wake of the devastating Eaton fire that burned more than 14,000 acres over 36 days, killing 17 people and destroying nearly 10,000 structures. One of them, Moore said, was her in-laws' home. 'Do better, Amazon. Can we not have better discretion than to leave a package at a residence that no longer exists? This is my mother and father in law's home. Smh,' Moore wrote Tuesday on Instagram stories, sharing a photo of the package amid the debris at the leveled residence. The singer-actor, who is married to Dawes musician Taylor Goldsmith, was among many who have called out the e-commerce giant for continuing service to destroyed and damaged properties in the burn zones. The company's delivery-confirmation photos have been making the rounds on social media in recent weeks. Read more: Among thousands of Angelenos displaced by fires, celebrities face the same devastating losses Steve Kelly, a spokesperson for Amazon, confirmed Wednesday in a statement to The Times that the company had reached out to Moore to apologize. "We've reached out to Ms. Moore via Instagram to apologize for this and to ask for more information from her in-laws so we're better able to investigate what happened here," Kelly said. "Those who deliver on our behalf have been advised to use discretion in areas impacted by wildfires — especially if it involves delivering to a damaged home — that clearly didn't happen here." The "A Walk to Remember" and "The Princess Diaries" star has not commented publicly on Amazon's statement. However, she did post about the fires again on her Instagram grid. Reflecting on the month that has passed since the wildfires, Moore said that in addition to feeling survivor's guilt she is struggling and "reaching out and asking for help and guidance on how to process this trauma." Her brain and heart, she said, "are so deeply broken." In the Tuesday post, Moore said that she, like many Altadena residents, "never got an evacuation notice" as the wind-fueled fires moved through her community. Instead, she received a call from her brother-in-law at 6:45 p.m. Jan. 7 encouraging her and her family to get "the heck out of Dodge." Read more: Western Altadena got evacuation order many hours after Eaton fire exploded. 17 people died there "I calmly walked downstairs and relayed this to my husband and without skipping a beat, we promptly packed up the kids (in their pjs), our dog, and scrambled to find our 3 cats as the power went out. I'll never forget Taylor trying to figure out how to manually open our two little garage doors ... in the harrowing 60 mph winds, as the sky glowed a dark red and ash started to fall all around us," she wrote. "We raced across town amidst fallen trees on the freeway to the safety of our dear friend's place, got the kids down, and then I raced to Target to grab a litter box and some water, impulsively refreshing the watch duty app over and over. As we did all night. Over and over. Watching the evacuation zone narrow in on our little 8-block radius. It took until 4 a.m. for it to turn red. All the while, tossing and turning with a stomach-churning anxiety I've never experienced before." Moore said that she found out this week that the structure of her Altadena home is still standing. But, due to its proximity to the fire, its contents "are a near total loss." "We won't be there for a very long time as it and the neighborhood itself get sorted out and cleaned and the rebuilding starts. I say all of this because i'm struggling. Yes we are exceedingly lucky to technically still have the structure of a home. But also… do we still have a home? I think my definition is in flux," she added. Moore and Goldsmith weren't looking to move to that home until they stumbled upon it amid the COVID-19 pandemic in summer 2020, she said. She found out she was pregnant with her first child two weeks after closing escrow and they spent four years restoring and remodeling the house. They were two weeks away from completing the renovation when the fires hit, she said. Read more: Plaschke: The unbearable guilt of losing nothing — and everything — in the Altadena wildfire "I'm not saying all of this because I'm asking you to feel more sorry for us than someone else," Moore explained. "Like I said, I am grateful. We're so lucky! By the grace of god we found a place to stay in the meantime and the kids are happy and safe. We've even starting collecting the books and toys that they've lost. It's not a competition of who lost what or more. Real human beings across this town, regardless of their jobs or socioeconomic status, lost the life they'd come to know and count on in an instant. My whole heart is with them. Every one of them. This place, our home and the town itself, was our dream and I hope in time it will feel like that again… just a slightly different one." State investigators have not yet determined a cause for the Eaton fire, but video of flames at the base of a Southern California Edison transmission tower in Eaton Canyon the night the fire began has raised suspicions that the utility's equipment was at fault. Residents have filed more than 40 lawsuits against SCE since the fire. Times staff writer Caroline Petrow-Cohen contributed to this report.
