Figure Skating-Americans Chock and Bates skate to third straight ice dance title
BOSTON, March 29 (Reuters) - Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates danced to gold at the World Figure Skating Championships on Saturday to become the first team in 28 years to capture three consecutive world ice dance titles. Leading by almost four points after their electrifying rhythm dance on Friday -- vast by ice dance standards -- Chock and Bates were almost perfect to score 131.88 points for their sophisticated free dance program to jazz classic "Take Five," for a total of 222.06. Their final spin in which Chock balanced on Bates' outstretched foot had fans at TD Garden leaping to their feet seconds before the program ended. Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier won silver for the second consecutive season, scoring 130.10 for their elegant skate to the Annie Lennox cover of Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" for a total 216.54. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson scored 207.11 for bronze to become the first British world ice dance medallists since Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean capped a string of four straight victories in 1984. Chock and Bates, six-times U.S. champions and married couple, are the first team to win three world titles in a row since Russians Oksana Grishuk and Evgeni Platov claimed four straight between 1994 and 1997. The victory sets the Americans up as favourites for next year's Milano-Cortina Olympics, where they will be aiming for their first Games ice dance medal. They were part of the U.S. squad that captured gold in the team event at the 2022 Beijing Games.

Canadian ice dancers Gilles, Poirier claim silver at figure skating worlds for 2nd straight year
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier will settle for silver once again. For the second straight year, the Canadian ice dancers finished second behind American rivals Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who claimed their third consecutive title on Saturday at the figure skating world championships in Boston. Toronto's Gilles and Poirier, from Unionville, Ont., scored a second-best 130.10 points in their enthralling free dance to Annie Lennox's version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale," for a total of 216.45 in their 12th world championships together. Chock and Bates tallied a winning total of 222.06, a season's best, after their jazz medley before the home crowd at TD Garden in Boston. The Americans built a 3.74-point cushion in Friday's rhythm dance, a large margin by ice dance standards. Britain's Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson took bronze with 207.11. Alicia Fabbri of Terrebonne, Que., and Paul Ayer of Brossard, Que., were 20th (170.88). The combined placement of nine from Canada's top two teams helped the country retain three provisional ice dance spots for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. Gilles and Poirier also finished second behind Chock and Bates at last year's worlds in Montreal, despite winning the free dance. The four-time Canadian champions — who also won world bronze in 2021 and `23 — edged the Americans at last month's Four Continents Championships in Seoul, setting up an anticipated showdown at worlds this weekend. Later Saturday, American star Ilia Malinin was set to compete for his second world championship in the men's free skate, the final competition of the Boston worlds. Malinin, the self-proclaimed "Quad God," posted a whopping 110.41 in Thursday's short program, 3.32 points ahead of Japan's Yuma Kagiyama in the two-man race for gold. Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., ranked 15th (80.25). The 25-year-old would need to climb into the top 10 to earn Canada a second provisional entry in the men's event at next year's Olympics.

Nevertheless, when he started feeling better, his musical interests returned quickly. 'My friends said I went on about 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' and how they couldn't keep up with what I was saying,' he said. 'They were, like, 'Yeah, he's still got that brain.'' Matt Pinfield Comes Out of a Coma After Suffering Massive Stroke: 'Guys, I'm Alive'
The post Matt Pinfield Comes Out of a Coma After Suffering Massive Stroke: 'Guys, I'm Alive' appeared first on Consequence. Former MTV host Matt Pinfield has come out a coma after suffering a massive stroke back in January. The music personality shared the great news with The Hollywood Reporter, declaring, 'Guys, I'm alive!' Pinfield, who hosted MTV's influential alternative-rock program 120 Minutes in the 1990s and again during a revival in the early 2010s, had been in a coma for roughly two months. He has now been released from the ICU, and is currently rehabilitating at a facility in Los Angeles. 'I'm recovering and am going to come back swinging. I was unresponsive for two months,' he further told The Hollywood Reporter. 'Friends were thinking they were coming to see me for the last time. The doctors never expected me to speak or to walk again.' As Pinfield mentioned, there was a prevailing thought that he would not survive, as he also battled pneumonia and was put on a ventilator during the ordeal. When he woke from the coma, he immediately started talking music. 'My friends said I went on talking about 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' and how they couldn't keep up with what I was saying,' he said. 'They were, like, 'Yeah, he's still got that brain.'' Pinfield is itching to get back to work, once he makes a full recovery. He hosts a couple of programs on Los Angeles radio stations, and is the co-host of the AXS TV show The Power Hour. 'I'm definitely going to take some time to recover,' remarked Pinfield. 'Then I'll do my radio shows again and get back to work doing what I love, which is to entertain people playing music.' While he was in a coma, his daughter Jessica filed for temporary conservatorship over her father, requesting that she handle his health and finances amid concerns that others may take advantage of the situation. 'She's the one who saved my life,' said Pinfield. 'She protected me.' Pinfield also expressed gratitude to all the musicians and peers who supported him while he was in the ICU. 'I want to say how great grateful I am for all the people that that were wishing me well,' he said. 'The love of the community helped me get through this.' Among the people who supported Pinfield was Garbage singer Shirley Manson, who wrote on social media, 'He has championed so many artists over the decades who would have otherwise been ignored by mainstream media and the American music scene would be very different indeed without his taste and influence.'
