Miss your 3DS XL? This dual-screened Android handheld is almost exactly the same size

TL;DR The dual-screened AYN Thor will have 6-inch and 3.92-inch AMOLED panels. That will likely make it slightly smaller than the New Nintendo 3DS XL. Pricing hasn't been revealed, but it could be a compelling alternative to expensive second-hand 3DS models. It's been less than a day since AYN announced the dual-screened Thor handheld, but it's already looking like an incredibly compelling device for Nintendo 3DS fans. Late last night, the company showed off the first key specs, and it's great news for anyone looking to replace their aging 3DS hardware. Several hours after announcing the console, the company revealed that it will feature a 6-inch FHD 120Hz AMOLED panel on the top, and a 3.92-inch 60Hz AMOLED panel on the bottom. That second screen is likely the same as the AYANEO Pocket DMG and Retroid Pocket Classic, and it's widely considered one of the best panels of its size. That said, the 8:7 aspect ratio will have some letterboxing on 3DS games and classic systems. It's slightly smaller than the secondary screen on the New Nintendo 3DS XL, which measures 4.18-inches, but larger than one on the non-XL model, which measures 3.02-inches. In any case, the resolution is significantly higher, so it should offer a significant step up in terms of visuals. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? AYN As for the main screen, it's a massive improvement over the relatively puny 400 x 240 output on the 3DS. The 6-inch FHD 120Hz AMOLED panel is more than five times the resolution, although again, there will be small black bars on the sides due to the 3DS' unique 5:3 aspect ratio. There's also no stereoscopic 3D effect, although many users turned that off anyway. The higher refresh rate is nice for some systems, but it will likely be lost when emulating 3DS games. AYANEO claims that refresh rates are capped at 60Hz when using both screens on its upcoming Pocket DS handheld due to Android limitations. AYN hasn't said anything about this regarding the Thor, but it will likely have the same issue. The AYN Thor looks just as portable as the original 3DS hardware. While AYN hasn't revealed the exact dimensions of the Thor, we can get a rough estimate of the size from the top screen. If the renders are correct, it should come in slightly smaller than the New Nintendo 3DS XL, which measures roughly 5.6 inches by 3.17 inches when closed. It will almost assuredly be thicker, but at least it will retain the same pocketability. Moving the speakers to the bottom and removing the camera altogether enables the much larger screen. It's much smaller than the AYANEO Pocket DS, which features a 7-inch panel on top and a 5-inch panel on the bottom. That's good news for fans of the smaller size of the original 3DS model, which has exploded in price in the last few years. AYN hasn't revealed pricing for the Thor, but if it comes in cheaper than the $400 earlybird pricing on the Pocket DS, it would be an excellent option for anyone in the market for a used 3DS. AYN still hasn't revealed full specs, pricing, or a release date for the Thor, so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. Follow

There's another dual-screened Android handheld coming, this time from the maker of the Odin

TL;DR AYN has revealed the AYN Thor, its first dual-screened Android handheld. The Thor was revealed in a short teaser video alongside news that the company is also making the Odin 3. The announcement comes a day after pricing was revealed for AYANEO's Pocket DS, the first Android-powered dual-screen clamshell to break cover. We've been waiting for a dual-screened Android handheld for what feels like forever, and we finally got one with the recent unveiling of the AYANEO Pocket DS. It's only been a day since we learned the pricing for the Pocket DS, but now we have a second dual-screened, Android-powered device to salivate over, this time from AYN, the maker of the critically beloved Odin series. Sticking with the Norse naming scheme, the AYN Thor is a clamshell handheld that the company has confirmed is running a version of Android as its operating system. We got our first look at the new console today in a short announcement video, which you can check out above. AYN has also teased in its official Discord that more will be revealed in the coming week, but it's unclear if that's simply referring to the video or if we'll get more details as well (we'll be on the lookout!). As for what we can glean from the sub-40-second video, it looks like we're getting a device that will closely resemble the Retroid Pocket Flip 2, albeit with a second screen baked into the bottom half. It certainly looks like the top screen is smaller than the Pocket DS' 7-inch main display, and the smaller stacked triggers also look a lot like the Flip 2's. Otherwise, the AYN Thor appears to have inset sticks in an Xbox layout, a headphone jack on the bottom, cutouts for the speaker beside the Home and Back buttons, plus a USB-C port and what looks like a cover for the SD card slot on the front lip of the device. Of course, there are plenty of details still to be revealed here, most importantly the core specs and pricing. One thing we do know, though, is that we're getting a Qualcomm SoC, as the Snapdragon logo is show in the teaser. Only time will tell if AYN has opted for the best-in-class Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, or matched the Pocket DS' Snapdragon G3x Gen 2. The latter is surprisingly competitive on price at ~$400, but a lot will depend on that chip to determine where the Thor's pricing sits. Either way, it's great to finally be seeing more modern dual-screened handheld options that don't carry the super-premium price tags attached to the Windows clamshells that have dominated the space. The device teaser dropped alongside the news that AYN is also working on the Odin 3, but we don't even know what that one looks like yet. Considering the popularity of the Odin and the increasing fervor for dual-screened Android handhelds, it looks like it'll be a bumper end of 2025 for AYN. Follow

AYN Odin 3 and Thor could be the upgrade that retro gamers have been waiting for

TL;DR AYN has teased two new handheld gaming devices, the Odin 3 and a new handset named Thor. Both devices are confirmed to be Android handhelds, and not x86. More information about the devices will be released in the coming weeks. AYN's Odin 2 handheld lineup has been extremely popular, primarily due to the decently capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on board, which makes them perfect for emulating demanding retro consoles like the Nintendo Switch and others. However, there's no denying that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could soon be eclipsed by the much more powerful Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 on devices like the AYANEO Pocket S2. There's good news, though, as AYN is preparing a refresh for the Odin 2 in the form of the AYN Odin 3, alongside an entirely new handset, the AYN Thor. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. AYN just dropped a teaser for Thor and Odin 3 on their Instagram page: The teaser mentions 'next gen features arrived,' and the Chinese text below it roughly translates into 'The future is here.' Curiously, the teaser mentions today's date in YYYYMMDD format (commonly used in China), so we don't know when the devices will be released. AYN confirmed in their official Discord server that neither device is x86; both run Android. The company has also said they will release information about Thor in the coming week and then Odin 3 afterward. The standard AYN Odin was released in 2023, with early backers receiving their units in December 2023. AYN followed up with the Odin 2 Mini in the middle of 2024 and the Odin 2 Portal in late 2024. We're overdue for a refresh for the base Odin 2, and the time is just right for a powerful upgrade. Follow

Tariffs might just ruin retro gaming handhelds

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In about a week and a half, the U.S. will begin imposing much higher tariffs on products and packages purchased from a few countries, namely China. As a result, a myriad of companies have raised prices in an attempt to counteract the higher costs. However, some companies, such as Anbernic, are halting shipments to the U.S. entirely. Just last week, Retroid announced that despite its best efforts, those in the U.S. who pre-ordered the Pocket Classic in Kiwi, Teal, or Berry would have to either pick a different color or cancel their orders entirely. This is due to an imposed deadline of April 25, at which point "shipping agencies will not accept U.S.-bound packages from China." This was just the first domino to fall, as Anbernic has recently updated its Shipping Policy landing page. There's a notice at the top of the page that says, "Due to changes in U.S. tariff policies, we will be suspending all orders shipping from China to the United States starting today. We strongly recommend prioritizing products shipped from our U.S. warehouse." A message recently shared on the AYN Discord channel seemingly confirmed that it, too, will be making changes. The company will continue shipping orders until April 25, "then pause for a week and try to choose a new channel for shipping after May 5th." Currently, AYN offers either DHL or 4PX for shipping, with the customer being able to choose during the checkout process. Taking a breather and going back to the drawing board seems to be the most logical move. It's something we saw Nintendo do in regards to the Switch 2 launch, after the company delayed pre-orders in the U.S. As a result, many began worrying whether the Switch 2, which is made in Vietnam, would end up being priced even higher than the $449 retail price. Ultimately, Nintendo decided against raising the price of the Switch 2 itself, but confirmed that "Switch 2 accessories will see price adjustments." However, there's still a chance that the Switch 2 will eventually cost more, depending on how much inventory Nintendo has on hand in its U.S. warehouses. Anbernic's decision to suspend shipments to the U.S. comes at an interesting time, as the company only just recently announced its latest gaming handheld, the RG557. However, pre-orders for the device haven't even opened yet, and we're interested to see how things will play out. The company has warehouses in both China and the U.S., but given how quickly the tariff situation has developed, we're not sure what inventory levels might look like. Although it's unlikely, there's even a chance that Anbernic wasn't able to get any inventory into the States. Then there are AYANEO and OneXSugar, two companies that announced devices earlier this year but have yet to provide any availability updates. AYANEO's Pocket ACE looks to be one of the most pocketable and powerful handhelds we've ever seen, utilizing the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 and sporting a 4.5-inch display. OneXSugar's Sugar1 is set to be one of the first devices to be powered by the new Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, announced at GDC 2025. While flagship power is great, the real story is the dual-screen design, essentially offering a modern (and futuristic) take on the Nintendo DS. While we're excited to see both of these gaming handhelds launched, we're also expecting to be disappointed. It wouldn't come as a shock if neither of these ended up arriving in the U.S. If they do, I suspect that we're in store for some rather high price tags. Unfortunately, this entire situation is out of our hands, meaning we're just at the mercy of OEMs, shipping partners, and retailers. It also means that even if you are (or were) willing to pay the tariffs, you might end up finding an order being canceled just because you live in the U.S. In the weeks leading up to the deadline, companies have been trying to bring as much inventory into the U.S. as they can. So it's likely that we'll see a bit of a buffer between now and when the inventory runs out. After that, all bets are off, and we simply won't know what the landscape of things will look like until the time has arrived. Some OEMs and retailers, such as Anbernic and AliExpress, have U.S. warehouses that you can order from. Besides that, Amazon resellers are probably your next best bet. But no matter what, be prepared to pay more than what the original retail price was. Phone deals: Best Buy | Walmart | Samsung | Amazon | Verizon | ATT
