Devotees get coconuts broken on their heads in ritual
Karur: A coconut-breaking ritual to mark Aadi Peruku celebrations was held on Monday at the Sri Mahalakshmi Amman Temple in Mettumahadhanapuram village, located in Krishnarayapuram taluk of Karur district. However, the intensity of the ritual led to multiple injuries. The event witnessed a large turnout of devotees from various parts of the state. The unique tradition involves devotees breaking coconuts on their own or others' heads as a mark of fulfilling vows made to the deity. Several of them had been fasting since the beginning. Several participants were seen bleeding after coconuts were broken on their heads. Temple staff applied turmeric to their wounds as a first-aid measure. A medical camp set up near the temple treated more than 40 devotees, many of whom required stitches.
