Prince of Boom could be retired if he doesn't show enough in Wednesday's 2025 Ramornie Handicap

Ramornie Handicap contender Prince Of Boom could be retired unless he can rediscover his old form in the $200,000 Listed race over 1200m at Grafton on Wednesday. The Robert Heathcote -trained gelding, who has been battling hoof issues, hasn't won since taking out the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) two years ago. And jockey Aaron Bullock faces a monumental challenge to win the time-honoured sprint on the six-year-old after Prince Of Boom drew gate 20 (including emergencies). Heathcote's fellow Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida scratched Metalart from the Ramornie on Monday afternoon after the last-start WJ Healy Stakes winner drew barrier 19. Metalart was a $5.50 chance with bookmakers before the barrier draw. The race favourite is the Richard Litt -trained gelding Barber ($4, barrier four), with the ex-Godolphin sprinter's most recent victory coming in the $250,000 Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford on May 10. Heathcote spoke to Racenet on Monday from the Rocky Mountains in Canada, where he is holidaying with his family, and admitted Prince Of Boom faced a rocky future if he couldn't turn around his fortunes on Wednesday. The son of Spirit Of Boom finished last in the WJ Healy on June 28 at Eagle Farm. Heathcote will also saddle up The Big Goodbye in the Ramornie, which the gelding won as a five-year-old in 2023. The Big Goodbye has been freshened up nicely after suffering a stone bruise in his hoof that led to an infection, similar to what happened to star stablemate Rothfire in the lead-up to the $3m Stradbroke Handicap last month. 'It's fair to say they're past their best but if they can recover some of their past form then they're going to be competitive,' Heathcote said about his pair, who are both $11 in the market. Prince Of Boom goes bang in W.J Healy Stakes! @clarkyhk the king of front running rides delivers again for Robert Heathcote who trains the quinella. — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 24, 2023 'Prince Of Boom is a $1.4 million earner and on his best day, he would beat these but he's a horse that suffers from chronic hoof issues. 'He's an ongoing source of frustration but I reckon we've got him right going into this race. 'I can shout from the highest mountain saying 'he's spot-on' but we won't really know until he's under pressure at the 300m mark. 'It's a hard race so my two will have to step up and be counted. Certainly Prince of Boom, his future is clouded unless he can recover his old form. 'His desire is still there but his feet are causing him problems.' The Big Goodbye overhauls a very brave Ranges in the 2023 Ramornie! Martin Harley with a peach for the Robert Heathcote yard! — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 12, 2023 Schweida had never entered a horse into the Ramornie Handicap before this week but he was ready to have a crack with Metalart until the barrier draw cruelled his hopes of vying for the winner's $109,000 in prizemoney. In a wide-open race, there are five gallopers in the market at $8 or under. They are Barber ($4), Compelling Truth ($5), Midnight In Tokyo, Sha Of Gomer and Tribeca Star (all $8). Leading Sydney trainer Peter Snowden has won the Ramornie six times, either solo or with his son Paul, including last year with Ka Bling, but does not have a horse in this year's edition.

Jean Van Overmeire closing in on personal best season as he prepares for arrival of third child

While some jockeys are winding down as the racing season draws to a close, it's the opposite for the prolific and hardworking Jean Van Overmeire. The 30-year-old is just four wins away from eclipsing his best ever season haul of 104 winners and he's also weeks away from a new addition to his family. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'My wife Jordan is due to have another baby in a few weeks,' Van Overmeire said. 'We've got Savannah who's eight and Hugo's three. 'We don't know the sex of this one so it's all very exciting in the Van Overmeire residence at the moment. 'Life couldn't be better.' • ATC chairman resigns after Rosehill sale 'lost opportunity' On Saturday at Rosehill Gardens, Van Overmeire has a solid book of six rides. The popular jockey has spent the vast majority of the season riding on the provincial and country circuits and his 101 winners has him sitting in fourth place in the NSW jockeys' premiership behind Aaron Bullock (114), Braith Nock (107) and Ash Morgan (102). 'The season's going really well, it's been fantastic,' he said. 'I've probably been slipping under the radar, but things have gone really well this season. 'Being a jockey is very much a success-based job. 'Everything we do flows off riding winners. 'When you're riding winners your confidence builds, you get better opportunities in races, you make better decisions in races and with all that you get better outcomes.' One of those opportunities came a fortnight back at Rosehill Gardens when Van Overmeire did something a handful of the world's best jockeys, like James McDonald, Joao Moreira, Kerrin McEvoy, Craig Williams and Jason Collett, found beyond them – winning aboard Misterkipchoge. Jean Van Overmeire driving Misterkipchoge to victory at Rosehill last month. Picture: Getty Images 'It's funny, I rode against the horse in the start prior and he powered past me at a rate of knots, really catching my attention, and I remember thinking 'that horse is going to be winning next start',' Van Overmeire said. 'Then luck would have it that I'm riding the horse in his next run. 'I remember being behind the barriers and I could feel him underneath me and I just thought if I can put this horse into a good spot, his last run and the feel he's given me, 'he can't get beat'. 'He flew out of the barriers and straight away we were on the front foot and the rest is history. 'It was just one of those situations where everything fell into place. Good fortune or good management, people will make up their own mind. 'When reflecting it's good to think back and know my Judgement was on point.' • Schiller awaits all-clear to return from injury That was Van Overmeire's only win for Misterkipchoge's trainer Chris Waller from 17 opportunities in the last five racing seasons and Sydney's premier trainer has given the jockey another chance to make it two wins in a row this Saturday. Van Overmeire will again partner Misterkipchoge in the Toyota Forklifts 3&4YO Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m). 'I'm very grateful and happy that Chris is giving me another opportunity on the horse,' Van Overmeire said. 'It looks a bit trickier from the wider barrier (9) this time but that's something I'll discuss with Chris on Saturday. 'One thing I do know is the horse is racing really well and that win last start won't have hurt his confidence.' Misterkipchoge ($6) is the pick of Van Overmeire's Rosehill Gardens engagement which he says; 'Is good book of rides but a bad set of barriers brings us back to the pack.' Based on prices, Vella's Best at $14 is Van Overmeire's next best ride in the Petaluma 3YO Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m). 'I thought he ran really well behind King's Secret last start,' he said. 'He was forced to do plenty of work early and I thought he stuck to the task well in the straight. 'This time he's drawn more favourably and he will probably strip fitter again on Saturday being his third run back after a 12 month break.' His other rides on Saturday are two $21 chances King Ratel (race 8) and Gently Rolled (race 10), Victory Lane at $26 in race 3 and Shutter at $41 in race 2.
