Jets' Aaron Glenn Continues To Be Impressed With Justin Fields
Justin Fields has been the designated starting quarterback for the New York Jets in the last couple of months. Of course, he hasn't played a down for Gang Green ... But ... Through these last few months learning a new offense, team, and coaching staff, Fields has already shown what made him a commodity in the eyes of the Jets and head coach Aaron Glenn. Advertisement Speaking to reporters during OTAs on Wednesday, Glenn made it clear just how pleased he was with the stuff Fields has shown both on and off the field. "You hear about it from other coaches around the league that's been around him, and now that I've been around him for this long, you come to see that he's a man's man, for one, and he's himself," Glenn said. "And again, I like that about him. I like that he's not trying to be, and I'm going to use a (Bill) Parcells deal now, he's not trying to be the celebrity quarterback, he's just trying to be himself. "And whatever comes with that, it comes with it. So, he's not trying to impress anybody. He's going out there and he's busting his (expletive) trying to be the best quarterback he can be for this team." Glenn is taking a gamble of sorts in making Fields the quarterback of record in his first year in his Jets tenure. How so? An example, by the numbers: Fields ranks as the worst quarterback in the league during the fourth quarter in the last three seasons combined. Advertisement But Fields has also shown improvement as a pocket passer throughout his young career. And New York is banking on those skills catching up with his strong leadership traits ... as a "man's man'' who can win at QB. Jets Coach Reveals Update on Fields' Progress
Jets Coach Reveals Update on Fields' Progress originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The first rendition of Aaron Glenn's New York Jets will have a new face under center. The Jets are all-in on quarterback Justin Fields, giving him the green light to start without competition in 2025 and, perhaps, 2026. Advertisement This is ostensibly Fields' last chance to start in the NFL. Fall out of favor with a third team, and the promise of his first-round draft capital wears off. As he enters Year 5, there's only so much potential to tap into, and if he falters under the bright lights of New York, he will simply run out of opportunities. Needless to say, Fields needs to hit if he's going to prevent the team from drafting his replacement early in the 2026 NFL Draft. He's not taking that opportunity for granted. Recently, Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand revealed an update on Fields' offseason progress as he enters the most important year of his career. "He's obviously a physically talented player," Engstrand said about Fields, ESPN's Rich Cimini shared (h/t Zac Wassink). "Everybody talks about the running — well, the guy's got an arm, too, and he does a great job with that. Mentally, he's phenomenal. He's been absolutely phenomenal so far, and we expect more out of that. Advertisement 'There's just a lot of things that you can do with that type of player that's going to put stress on a defense and make that defensive coordinator stay up late at night as we get going into this thing." Fields' 2024 campaign was abbreviated. He was benched for Russell Wilson after six games and four wins, used afterwards as an extension of the ground game. In those six games, though, Fields was promising, setting career-best marks in terms of completion percentage, interception percentage, passer rating, and adjusted net yards per attempt. However, it came in a small sample with serious training wheels. New York will be a run-first team in 2025, but unleashing Fields in the dropback game is necessary to realize the unit's potential. For that, Fields must take a legitimate step. "It is just growth," Engstrand added about Fields, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "Just going through his career, just continuing to stack experience along with it and ultimately ends up winning four games out of six. You just see some of the things that are starting to develop in his game, and then you look at that and you go, 'That's pretty good, we can do some things with that.'" Advertisement With Fields under center, there's a real chance the Jets win some games with smoke and mirrors, not unlike Pittsburgh did a season ago. If he's going to stick, though, he'll have to make good on his coordinator's optimism. Jets' Justin Fields Reveals 'No Limits' Expectation
Jets' Justin Fields Reveals 'No Limits' Expectation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 season is Justin Fields' time. The New York Jets took a chance on the former first-round pick to become the leading man of Aaron Glenn's new regime, and it is seen as a win-win for both player and franchise. Advertisement Fields gets a chance to prove he is starting-caliber, and the Jets, while signing him to a two-year deal, can move on from him after the 2025 season relatively unscathed. Still, for Fields, the upcoming season is a crucial one in his attempt to change the narrative surrounding him after four years in the league. Given that we still don't know exactly what kind of player Justin is after glimpses of his talent and nothing more, he could be seen as an unknown commodity of sorts. But he knows who he can be. 'I think I can be a player that has no limits,' Fields said. 'A player that can make everybody around him better, can lead a team, can be that guy. So I'm just striving to be that player each and every day, and really for everybody to know that I'm that player. Advertisement "I think I know within myself I'm that player or I can get to that point but it's more for me just showing everybody else and proving not only to myself but proving to the world that you look at guys like Pat [Mahomes], Josh Allen, Lamar [Jackson] where everybody knows they're elite quarterback. At the end of the day, that's my goal and where I want to get to by the time I get done playing.' Justin Fields (2) rushes for a Tannous/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images For Fields, his biggest thing is proving he is "that" guy, and it isn't an easy thing to do. In what will be his third team in three years, Fields has been handed the starting title for Tanner Engstrand's offense, giving him a clear runway for 2025. Advertisement However, achieving the elite status he craves will be a long and hard road. However, Fields seems confident he can, and who are we to say he can't? Yes, the first four years of his career have shown him to be inconsistent, but that doesn't mean it's now set in stone for the rest of his NFL life. Fields has a chance to show the world he is the guy he believes he is. The door of opportunity has swung open. Now he has to walk through it. Prediction: Win (1-0). Week 2: vs. Buffalo Bills The Bills are still a lot to handle in the AFC East. Prediction: Loss (1-1). Week 3: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Bucs have a good offense and the Jets would likely handle them better later on in the season. Prediction: Loss (1-2). Week 4: at Miami Dolphins (MNF) The Dolphins have had a lot going on already this offseason and already being in Florida could bode well for the Jets. Prediction: Win (2-2). Week 5: vs. Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys should be better with a healthy Dak Prescott at quarterback. Prediction: Loss (2-3). Week 6: vs. Denver Broncos (London) The Jets have a bit of an advantage in terms of international games so an upset could be in order. Prediction: Win (3-3). Week 7: vs. Carolina Panthers Two similar teams looking to improve with young rosters... Prediction: Win (4-3). Week 8: at Cincinnati Bengals The Bengals are going to be overly motivated the entire season after a tough 2024. Prediction: Loss (4-4). Week 9: Bye Week 10: vs. Cleveland Browns There are still a lot of question marks with the Browns... even more than a new-look Jets team. Prediction: Win (5-4). Week 11: at New England Patriots (TNF) It's a big game between two AFC East teams looking to improve in 2025... but home on a Thursday is an edge. Prediction: Loss (5-5). Week 12: at Baltimore Ravens The Ravens remain a top-tier team where the Jets want to be. Prediction: Loss (5-6). Week 13: vs. Atlanta Falcons The Falcons out of their dome and into MetLife could be a nice edge. Prediction: Win (6-6). Week 14: vs. Miami Dolphins While this will be a winnable one, it's a potential upset of sorts. Prediction: Loss (6-7). Week 15: at Jacksonville Jaguars It's hard to gauge where the Jaguars will be but this could go either way. Prediction: Loss (6-8). Week 16: at New Orleans Saints The Saints have so much going on, simply put. Prediction: Win (7-8). Week 17: vs. New England Patriots In a season finale at home, could the Jets sneak close to the postseason? Prediction: Win (8-8). Week 18: at Buffalo Bills This is very depending on where the Bills stand in the playoff picture, but it's also their final game at home before their new stadium opens... a lot to ask. Prediction: Loss (8-9).
