Japan's Inpex launches FEED for Abadi LNG project in Indonesia

JAKARTA, April 9 (Reuters) - Japanese oil and gas explorer Inpex Corp (1605.T), opens new tab on Wednesday launched a front-end engineering design for its Abadi liquefied natural gas project in Indonesia, its chief executive said. The Abadi project is expected to produce at its peak 9.5 million tonnes of LNG a year, 150 million standard cubic feet per day of pipe gas and 35,000 barrels of condensate per day, Indonesia's upstream oil and gas regulator data showed. The FEED launch marks major progress for the project, chief executive Takayuki Ueda said, adding the company is making every effort to accelerate production at the project. The Abadi LNG plant, in the Masela block, is expected to start production in the early 2030s. The project has faced years of delays.

Japan's Inpex targets FID for Indonesia's Abadi LNG project in 2027

TOKYO, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Japan's biggest oil and gas explorer, Inpex Corp (1605.T), opens new tab, said on Thursday it aims to make a final investment decision (FID) on its Abadi liquefied natural gas project in Indonesia in 2027 as part of its efforts to expand LNG supply. Under a new three-year business plan through 2027, the company plans to invest 1.8 trillion yen ($11.7 billion) in growth areas, including its flagship Ichthys LNG project in Australia. "Natural gas and LNG have a relatively low greenhouse gas emissions intensity compared to other fossil fuels and will play an increasingly important role as practical fuels in the energy transition," President Takayuki Ueda told a news conference. Inpex, which owns a 65% stake in the Abadi project, plans to begin front-end engineering design this year and reach FID in 2027, aiming to start production in the early 2030s. The project has faced years of delays after planning changes and then the withdrawal by Shell (SHEL.L), opens new tab which sold its 35% interest to Indonesia's Pertamina [RIC:RIC: and Malaysia's Petronas in 2023. Inpex plans to expand LNG production at Ichthys by adding a third train, targeting production in the first half of the 2030s. Through new investments, its LNG output is expected to reach 800,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the 2030s, up from 630,000 currently, Ueda said. Inpex will also explore cleaner, integrated gas-fired power generation, aiming to provide solutions to power-intensive sectors such as data centres, it said, without further details. It is also aiming to support the expansion of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by providing iodine, a key raw material, as a by-product from a gas field in Japan, and will pursue other resource recovery businesses from brine and subsurface fluids. PSCs, thin and bendable, are a potential low-cost and space-saving alternative to silicon cells. ($1 = 153.8000 yen)

Iraq offers 11 steam power plant projects

Iraq is offering projects to construct 11 steam power plants with a combined generation capacity of around 15,000 MW, an official has said. The Electricity Ministry has presented these projects in various parts of Iraq to foreign companies and is awaiting their response on project details and costs, the Ministry's spokesman Ahmed Al-Abadi told the official Iraqi news agency on Monday. Abadi said the construction of these plants would take three to five years and they would support Baghdad's plans to tackle a wide electricity supply gap in OPEC's second largest producer. 'We have offered projects to build 11 steam power stations to foreign firms…we expect these stations to generate nearly 15,000 MW,' he said. 'These stations will operate on available fuel….we presented them to those companies and asked them to provide details and other procedures needed to undertake them.' Iraq is suffering from a large power supply gap as a result of war damage, lack of maintenance at its facilities and severe shortages in Iranian gas supplies. Steam plants have some advantages over other power projects, including more production, lower fuel consumption and maintenance costs, and smaller project sites.
