Anbar – INA The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Sunday the launch of a project to cultivate 200 dunums of olive and pistachio trees in Haditha Oasis, Anbar province, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Sami Hussein Ali, Director of the Desert Oasis Project in Anbar, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that, under the directives of Agriculture Minister Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki and the supervision of Bassam Kanaan Abdul-Jabbar, Director General of the Forestry and Desertification Department, the ministry has initiated the rehabilitation of Haditha Oasis (55) — one of the project's key sites in the Haditha district. The oasis, located to the west of Haditha along the main road, covers an area of 200 dunums. 'The rehabilitation includes planting high-oil-yield olive trees and Aleppo pistachios across the entire 200 dunums,' Ali explained. 'Additionally, the project will see the construction of a new departmental building and the installation of two solar power systems with a combined 37-kilowatt capacity.' He further noted that the project will also focus on rehabilitating two wells, each with a 30-horsepower capacity, as well as implementing a drip irrigation system across the entire area. A 2-kilometer electricity line will be extended, and the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for dozens of low-income men and women.

Intensified Efforts to Contain Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Iraq
By John Lee. The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture has said it has intensified its preventive measures to combat the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and protect the country's livestock. The campaign is being led by the Veterinary Directorate, under the supervision of Dr. Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki, Minister of Agriculture, and with direct oversight from Dr. Mithaq Abdul-Hussein Al-Khafaji, Deputy Minister for Technical Affairs, and Dr. Thamer Habib Al-Khafaji, Director General of the Veterinary Directorate. The ministry has instructed veterinary hospitals to continue monitoring, investigating, and promptly reporting suspected cases, particularly in affected areas such as Fudhailiyah, Jurf Al-Naddaf, Hay Al-Wahda, and Nahrawan in Baghdad, as well as other identified outbreak zones. Movement of livestock to and from infected areas will be restricted for 14 days to contain the disease. Additionally, the ministry is supplying veterinary hospitals with disinfectants, antibiotics, and fever-reducing medications, while also distributing these supplies to farmers when necessary. As part of an awareness campaign, the Veterinary Directorate has been organizing educational workshops and seminars in collaboration with the Agricultural Guidance and Training Directorate to educate farmers on disease management and preventive measures. Livestock infected with foot-and-mouth disease in Iraq reach 3,000
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki, revealed on Wednesday that the number of livestock infected with foot-and-mouth disease had reached 3,000. Al-Maliki said in a press conference that vaccinations are free and that the disease has existed for more than 90 years, according to the state news agency (INA). Iraq is experiencing a severe outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which has resulted in the deaths of nearly 1.5 million cattle during the last three years, according to local media. Experts link the spread of the disease to a reduction in immunization efforts under consecutive governments, which aggravated the situation. Despite the current government's attempts to control the disease, the vaccines used are out of date, according to Shafaq News. The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture detected infections across different provinces, causing local authorities to impose animal movement restrictions, tighten preventative measures, and launch sterilization programs, despite official assurances that the disease is not transmitted to humans. According to the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH), foot-and-mouth disease is a serious, highly infectious viral disease of animals with major economic consequences. The illness infects cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and other cloven-hoofed ruminant species. It is a transboundary animal disease that has a significant impact on livestock output and hinders regional and worldwide traffic of animals and animal products.
