Halifax fighter looking to punch ticket to UFC contender series
Fighter Abdel "the Mummy" Abdelaziz and coach Gavin "Guv'nor" Tucker from Tower One Combat Sports in Dartmouth, N.S., are pictured. (Brianne Foley/CTV Atlantic) Abdel 'The Mummy' Abdelaziz is no stranger to the cage, but he said fighting at home, is a good feeling. The fighter is competing in the main event of Fight League Atlantic 20 against Justin Vazquez out of Miami, Fla., at the Zatzman Sportsplex in Dartmouth, N.S., Saturday night. 'I'm very excited for this one,' Abdelaziz said. Fighting in Dartmouth, N.S., means his friends and his teammates can watch him fight live without booking a plane ticket. Abdelaziz is 7-0 in professional fights but he said this one is a big one. 'I'm thinking of this one as kind of my application, my chance to make a statement for the Contender Series,' he said. 'If that doesn't pan out, you know, I feel like I still have a lot of opportunities.' The Contender Series is put on by UFC president Dana White. On the show, fighters are given an opportunity to compete for a UFC contract. Abdelaziz's coach – the owner of Tower One Combat Sports in Dartmouth and UFC fighter Gavin 'Guv'nor' Tucker – said he believes his fighter is ready for the big show. 'He was my main body for a lot of years and he got really good,' said Tucker. 'He's a really intelligent fighter, you know, an absolute soldier. He's here twice a day, every day. Abdelaziz started sparring with Tucker in 2020 when the UFC veteran was looking for a training partner because of COVID-19. 'I was interested in the UFC as a fan and stuff like that,' said Abdelaziz. 'But then I started training with Gavin because we were at the same gym at the time.' Abdelaziz said working with Tucker led to his transition to Mixed Martial Arts and his impressive professional record. Tucker said Abdelazis is already fighting at a UFC level. 'He's already beating guys above his weight class,' said Tucker. 'He's already tested himself in different gyms, in the big-name gyms across the country. He knows what he can do. The sport is insane and unpredictable and so obviously there's always that feeling of 'what ifs.' But he's ready. He's there.' Abdelaziz, who was born in Egypt, is currently ranked third in Canada in the professional men's featherweight division. He lived in Kuwait before moving to Nova Scotia to study engineering. His sponsorships come from across the country, but he said he still sees Egypt as the home he's honoured to represent. 'And then Halifax, I've been here for a long time, and I really like living here,' he said. 'So it's a privilege.' Tucker, from Ship Cove, N.L., said Abdelaziz's determination is what makes him stand out. 'I trained with great coaches and just kept the work going in a very similar manner to what Abdel's doing right now,' Tucker said. At 38-years-old Tucker said he still loves the sport and helping Abdel achieve his dream is his top priority. 'He's got a real engineer's mind,' Tucker said 'So, I think that helps me stay motivated to coach. We have people like that around, and I'm really blessed.' The goal for Abdelaziz, his coach and the team at Tower One is clear. 'The UFC for sure,' said Abdelaziz. 'That's the pinnacle of the sport. That's what we're working towards. If you want to become the best, that's kind of where you get to make your statement.' For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page

Manager: Like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Movsar Evloev willing to take long road to UFC title
Manager: Like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Movsar Evloev willing to take long road to UFC title MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Ali Abdelaziz says Movsar Evloev is happy to prove he's the rightful No. 1 contender – no matter how long it takes. Despite being undefeated and 9-0 in the octagon, Evloev (19-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) is not next in line for a title shot, which even surprised UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Evloev is rumored to welcome Bellator standout Aaron Pico to the UFC, but nothing has been confirmed. Evloev's past three wins have come over former title challenger Diego Lopes, top contender Arnold Allen, and most recently former champion Aljamain Sterling at UFC 310. Abdelaziz has had numerous clients who have had to go on almost double-digit win streaks before getting their title shot, and says Evloev embodies the same mentality. "The UFC, half of them want him to get a title shot. The other half ... Anyway, if Movsar needs to get one more, he said Khabib (Nurmagomedov) did it, Islam (Makhachev) did it, Kamaru (Usman) did it, Belal (Muhammad) did it," Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie. "If he has to get one more and be on a 10-fight win streak, he will do it. "If he goes out there next fight and he wins – he doesn't have a fight officially yet – but he deserves to be fighting for the title. But at the end of the day, we'll follow the system. He said this: 'If I'm the best in the world, and if I lose before I get to the title, I'm not the best in the world.' This is the same thing Khabib told me, Islam told me, Kamaru told me. These guys (that) have the same mentality, they go a long way." Nurmagomedov, Makhachev, Usman and Muhammad, all managed by Abdelaziz, became UFC champions. Makhachev currently is the UFC's lightweight titleholder.

Ali Abdelaziz says Patchy Mix could earn title shot with UFC 316 win: 'It's a crazy sport'
Ali Abdelaziz says Patchy Mix could earn title shot with UFC 316 win: 'It's a crazy sport' Ali Abdelaziz says the idea of Patchy Mix becoming No. 1 contender after UFC 316 isn't out of the realm of possibility. Former Bellator champion Mix (20-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his octagon debut against Mario Bautista (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) on Saturday's main card pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Mix has long declared himself as the best 135-pounder in the sport, and Abdelaziz has watched him train first hand. "He believes it," Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie on Mix declaring himself as the best bantamweight. "I train with Patchy two days a week because I teach a class at the (UFC Performance Institute), and he comes to my class all the time. He chokes guys from 125 to light heavyweight. He is this good on the ground and grappling. "He's fighting a tough guy. His opponent is very hard to deal with because he doesn't give you much, and I think Patrick has to find something. The key is to pressure him early. It's a three-round fight. He's been fighting five-round fights, and I think Patrick is going to push the gas and try to make him make a mistake and capitalize on it and probably choke him." With his prior accolades, Mix doesn't see himself needing to climb the ladder. If he can impress against Bautista, Abdelaziz would love to see him in the title picture. "It's a crazy sport. He's a world champion already," Abdelaziz said. "He's 20-1. He's 31-1 with his amateur career. He has almost 20 finishes, and I think he can fight for the title (with just one UFC win). Why not, if he goes out there and has an impressive performance? You have Cory Sandhagen – of course, I think he deserves (a title shot). But at the end of the day, Patchy Mix is a fighter. He never turned down a fight, he doesn't choose opponents, and he's always game. He took this fight on three weeks' notice."

Manager: Justin Gaethje deserves Ilia Topuria vs. Charles Oliveira winner after UFC 317
Manager: Justin Gaethje deserves Ilia Topuria vs. Charles Oliveira winner after UFC 317 With the UFC lightweight division getting a makeover in the aftermath of Islam Makhachev vacating the title, Justin Gaethje's position for a title shot has seemingly improved. A new champion will be crowned in just over one month when Ilia Topuria takes on Charles Oliveira for the vacant belt in the UFC 317 headliner on June 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). What happens after that remains to be seen. Gaethje (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) was already making the pitch for him to fight for the belt next before Makhachev vacated, as he represented a fresh matchup for the now-former champ. With Makhachev out of the picture now, though, Gaethje's manager, Ali Abdelaziz of Dominance MMA, still thinks he's next in line. "I think Justin Gaethje's the No. 1 contender," Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie. "He was supposed to fight Dan Hooker, and Hooker didn't show up. He stepped up for the company, fought Rafael Fiziev (at UFC 313), and I think he should wait and fight the winner. That's what I think he should do, but in reality, this game leaves people behind, and I don't want this game to leave him behind. If it makes sense, Justin will fight. Justin is afraid of no one. He will fight anyone. It has to make sense for him." With the way the 155-pound division is being booked, Gaethje is likely looking at a matchup with Paddy Pimblett (who recently called him out) or Arman Tsarukyan if he doesn't get the title shot. Abdelaziz said he's not opposed to either pairing, but simply wants the fight that would put his client in an undeniable spot. "Who cares? It doesn't matter," Abdelaziz said. "If you're a fighter and you think you're the best in the world, you have to beat the best guys. You don't pick and choose. Justin Gaethje never picked an opponent, never chose an opponent. He will fight you anywhere, any time. It doesn't really matter, but it has to be fair. A guy who gave his title shot to save International Fight Week and fight Max Holloway. He knocked out Dustin Poirier and Dustin Poirier got a title shot. How are you going to tell him he can't get the next title shot?" Abdelaziz and Gaethje will likely be waiting and watching to see what happens at UFC 317, and whether it's Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) or Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) who goes home with the belt. Gaethje would love the chance to avenge his first-round submission loss to Oliveira from UFC 274 if he emerges with gold, but if it's Topuria, then Abdelaziz thinks that's a massive fight for the sport. "If Ilia wins, Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria is a blockbuster fight," Abdelaziz said.
