Dhofar exhibition showcases mountain, marine environment
Salalah: An exhibition titled 'Dhofar: A Natural History Wonder' was inaugurated on Sunday at the Museum of the Frankincense Land in Salalah. The exhibition is organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in cooperation with the Natural History Museum in Muscat and the Museum of the Frankincense Land in Dhofar Governorate. The exhibition was opened under the auspices of Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Agency, and will run until 31 August. The exhibition showcases the mountain and marine environments of Dhofar, displaying a diversity of rare wildlife found worldwide, along with the various plants that grow across the governorate's wilayats. It also features a scientific collection on the natural history of Dhofar. Usama Mohammed Al Rowas, Director of the Museum of the Frankincense Land, stated that the exhibition, launched by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, aims to enhance environmental protection awareness, highlight the importance of conserving natural resources, and provide an educational and recreational platform for visitors of all ages. He added that the exhibition is uniquely displayed across different halls of the Museum, making it accessible to all visitors during the Khareef (monsoon) season. This is intended to activate the governorate's role as a global tourist destination.

Winners announced for North Al Batinah Environmental Excellence Hackathon
Sohar: The Environment Authority on Sunday announced the winners of the Environmental Excellence Hackathon in North Al Batinah Governorate. The hackathon saw wide participation from innovative youth and technology enthusiasts across Oman over a two-day period. The event was held under the patronage of Dr. Saif Abdullah Al Haddabi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation for Research and Innovation, and in the presence of His Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority. The project "Naqa for Active Carbon" secured first place, while "Stark" came in second, and "Bio Power" took third place. Nizar Salem Al Fannah Al Araimi, Director of the Environment Department in North Al Batinah, stated that the hackathon aimed to develop creative and technological solutions for environmental challenges, support and encourage youth and developers in the environmental field, and promote innovations to create smart solutions, platforms, and applications to address environmental issues. He highlighted that the event attracted top programmers, leading companies, job seekers, and postgraduate students. He added that over 48 hours, participants presented innovative solutions to specific environmental problems by exchanging ideas, designing prototypes, and building applications or projects aimed at environmental improvement. The hackathon focused on key themes, including vegetation and wildlife challenges, as well as preserving natural resources from pollution. Al Araimi explained that the hackathon addressed several environmental challenges, such as coastal erosion, climate change, cyclones, rising temperatures, invasive birds and plants, wildlife encroachment, desertification, and overgrazing. The closing ceremony featured the launch of the "Masar" platform, designed to track performance indicators for environmental management staff in North Al Batinah, along with presentations on environmental issues and a panel discussion on climate change and its impact on communities.

Oman, Qatar sign MoU to upgrade cooperation in environment conservation
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman and the State of Qatar on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) as part of a 5-year executive programme in the field of environment conservation (2025-2029). The MoU was signed on behalf of the Sultanate of Oman by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, and Abdulaziz Ahmad Al Mahmoud, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the State of Qatar. The MoU was inked on the sidelines of Oman Climate Week currently being held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC). According to the MoU, the two countries will establish joint cooperation projects, seek ways to finance the projects, cooperate in the field of related studies and research, organise visits to habitats of endangered wild animals and cooperate in combating invasive species. The MoU also provides for the exchange of expertise in addressing land degradation and upgrading the restoration of vegetation. The two sides will conduct a joint study on successful models on the implementation of sustainable management plans for nature reserves, as well as proposals on twinning projects among wildlife reserves.

International event in Muscat explores solutions to mitigate impacts of climate change
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman on Monday hosted the activities of the Oman Climate Week, under the slogan 'Living in a Sustainable World'. The event explores solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change and its applications in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and unify global efforts to ensure the achievement of climate change mitigation goals. The event was opened at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) under the patronage of Dr. Mahad Said Ba'Owain, Minister of Labour. The week's activities seek to achieve 6 main objectives, namely enhancing climate action, facilitating regional and international cooperation, promoting local, regional and international business, supporting the adoption and expansion of solutions, demonstrating the Sultanate of Oman's commitment and encouraging community participation. Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority said in a speech that as many as 250 speakers are attending the week's activities. They will present research papers at the two accompanying scientific conferences, presented by researchers from more than 60 countries around the world, in addition to more than 20 dialogue sessions with the participation of more than 100 speakers, as well as 15 workshops and training programs with the participation of more than 22 trainers. The event included the launch of three commemorative silver coins celebrating Omani wildlife, issued by the Central Bank of Oman. Each coin bears a coloured image of an element of Omani wildlife that is threatened with extinction. On the sidelines of Oman Climate Week, a global exhibition was held featuring the latest innovations in climate and environmental technology. The week includes a high-level strategic conference bringing together global experts, policy and decision makers, and leaders to address climate challenges and explore solutions, such as mitigating the effects of climate change, adapting to climate change, climate finance, carbon markets, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, climate technologies, loss and damage, and social inclusion. The week's activities include an interactive platform for advanced research and technological progress, presented by scientists, students and community leaders. As many as 250 speakers from more than 60 countries are taking part in the event. Moreover, more than 2,000 registered participants from the Sultanate of Oman, various sisterly and friendly countries, and international and regional organisations are participating in the week's activities.

International conference discusses developments in treating poisonings
Muscat: The 14th Middle East and North Africa Clinical Toxicology Association (MENATOX) Conference began in Muscat on Sunday. The conference discusses the latest developments, research and scientific discoveries related to the treatment of various poisonings. The 4-day event is participated by more than 150 experts from various countries of the world. The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Head of the Environment Authority. Several regional meetings are held during the conference. These meetings aim to boost cooperation in this field between countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
