Forestry Dept clears 3,000 illegal durian trees in Raub
RAUB: The Pahang Forestry Department has chopped down more than 3,000 durian trees illegally planted within the Gunung Benum Forest Reserve here, during an integrated enforcement operation dubbed 'Op Penguatkuasaan Bersepadu Tanaman Durian', which began on July 21. The operation to fell the trees, aged between three and 40 years, was carried out following a decree by the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who urged for immediate action to halt land encroachment activities across the state. Pahang Forestry Department director Zainuddin Jamaluddin said the operation covered an area of about 250ha, equivalent to 351 football fields, and is expected to take two months to complete. "Besides Musang King, D24, IOI and kampung variety durian trees, the enforcement team also cut down rambutan, mangosteen, petai and several other fruit trees planted within the forest reserve. "The operation was supported by the police, People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), the Pahang Enforcement Unit and the General Operations Force. Enforcement teams have been deployed for round-the-clock surveillance at the site," he said when met today. Zainuddin said that since the operation began, the department had not received any objections or threats from the farmers or planters involved. "The farmers have complied with the department's firm action to destroy the trees illegally grown on encroached land. "We issued eviction notices to those involved in illegal land clearing within the forest reserve on July 18," he said. He said those found guilty under Section 32 of the National Forestry Act 1984 may be fined up to RM50,000, jailed for up to five years, or both. Since the operation began last month, enforcement teams have cleared fruit trees from about 50 hectares of the forest reserve. Zainuddin said one of the challenges faced during the operation was accessing the encroached areas, as the enforcement teams had to pass through privately owned land, which was sometimes fenced and locked. "When landowners refuse to cooperate, authorities are forced to cut the locks. "Most of the encroached areas are located behind private properties. "Some landowners use closed-circuit television cameras to monitor the movement of enforcement teams and have refused to cooperate, giving various excuses to deny access through their orchards. "Most of those who encroached into the forest reserve to operate durian and fruit orchards are locals. It is time we remove the crops and structures they built, and stop them from continuing to exploit the forest reserve and government land," he said.

Pahang Sultan calls for deeper Syariah enactment reforms
KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has called for a thorough review of the state's Syariah enactments, stressing the need for reforms that go beyond superficial changes. He emphasised aligning the legal framework with Maqasid Syariah principles—protecting religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth—to address contemporary challenges. Speaking at the 196th meeting of the Pahang Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council, Al-Sultan Abdullah highlighted the necessity of a robust enforcement structure. 'Improvements in training, human resources, logistics, and technology are crucial to ensure laws are implemented fairly and professionally,' he said in a Facebook post by the Pahang Sultanate. The Ruler also underscored the importance of credible fatwa institutions, urging that rulings remain rooted in Quranic teachings, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. 'Fatwas must be respected as authoritative guidance, not mere formalities,' he added, warning against undermining valid rulings due to unclear enforcement. Additionally, Al-Sultan Abdullah proposed forming a Mosque Financial Audit Committee under JAIP to ensure transparent management of mosque funds. He stressed that donations must be handled with integrity, reflecting community trust. The Sultan further expressed hopes for strengthening Islamic education in Pahang, particularly in religious schools, to nurture knowledgeable and ethical individuals dedicated to serving society. - Bernama

Pahang Sultan vows to keep speaking out against land encroachment in state
KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has reaffirmed his commitment to continue voicing concerns over land encroachment in the state until the illegal activity is completely eradicated. However, His Highness said, addressing the issue requires the cooperation of all parties, including information sharing by the public and firm enforcement by the District and Land Offices, as well as the Forestry Department. "I will speak out when there is encroachment, not only in Raub and the Cameron Highlands but also in all districts in Pahang, but I cannot do it alone. I hope the people will provide information to my office and the government… if they do not provide information, it may be difficult to monitor," he said. Al-Sultan Abdullah shared his views in a special interview with Bernama at Istana Abdulaziz recently, in conjunction with his 66th birthday celebration. The Sultan acknowledged that the widespread attention the issue has received has served as a wake-up call to both stakeholders and residents of the state. "When this issue emerged, I observed greater awareness from all parties, including the public and district-level administrators. Many reports have reached my office and were forwarded to the state government for further action," he said. His Highness reiterated that Pahang, and Malaysia as a whole are not a place for anyone to commit arbitrary land encroachment. "Stop these practices immediately. More importantly, I hope that those who have the intention of encroaching, it is better they leave Pahang, go outside Malaysia. This is because the law will make things difficult for you and your families in the future," he warned. Prior to this, Al-Sultan Abdullah had expressed deep sadness upon learning that about 10,521 hectares of land in Raub had been encroached upon over an extended period. A total of 14,494.9 hectares of government land were also reportedly cleared and cultivated illegally with oil palm, rubber, durian, and various crops, while 5,997.09 hectares of Permanent Forest Reserve were also affected. Al-Sultan Abdullah's determination to combat the activities was also evident by His Highness taking a look down and driving a four-wheel drive vehicle to see the effects of encroachment in Raub on May 8. In the meantime, His Highness expressed his desire to develop small and medium industries (SMEs) in the state through the implementation of various programmes, especially involving youth. Al-Sultan Abdullah said that young people should strive to improve their quality of life by participating in SMEs to highlight the state's various products. "I also propose to meet with the relevant state executive council member to discuss so that we can have a programme that can develop SMEs in total. I hope we can prioritise these SMEs... let it be small (business), but sustainable," he said. — BERNAMA
