Tears flowed as the funeral of a boy, 4, who died in a road tragedy in Mullingar on Easter Monday was laid to rest today. Hundreds of people gathered for prayers at the Islamic Cultural Society Centre in Mullingar this afternoon. Four-year-old Abdur Rehman was buried in Newcastle cemetery in Dublin this afternoon. The boy - who is understood to have celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday - was hit by a car in Farranshock Estate, located just 2km from Mullingar town, shortly after 6.30pm on Easter Monday. Speaking to Irish Mirror, local councillor Andrew Duncan said 'The whole community is in deep shock and saddened with this tragedy. 'There is gloom across the whole town of Mullingar and afar. It's an awful tragedy. 'A young boy has lost his life and it's an absolute tragedy for all concerned, for the boy, his family, neighbours and the driver of the car who is often forgotten,' said Cllr Duncan said and offered his condolences to the boy's family." It is understood the little boy and his family only moved into the estate a couple of months ago. "We don't know exactly what happened. A little baby, just four years old," family friend Naveed Iqbal said. Fahim Khan explained: "His birthday was on Saturday. It's a loss for every parent. The parents are in the hospital traumatised and only had a new born baby four weeks ago. The mother is absolutely devastated. It's hard to put words together." Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Abdur Rehman was fatally injured when he was struck by a car only a matter of yards from his home in Mullingar's Farranshock housing estate shortly after 6:30pm. Despite desperate attempts to save the youngster both at the scene and en route to Mullingar's Midland Regional Hospital, Abdur passed away a short time later from his injuries. Locals living in Mullingar's Farranshock housing estate are still coming to terms with the tragic circumstances surrounding Monday evening's incident. In a post carried on its Facebook page this afternoon, Mullingar Islamic Cultural Society revealed Abdur's funeral will take place today at Mullingar's Mosque or Masjid. 'The funeral for little Abdur will be held today at the Mullingar Islamic Cultural Society,' a spokesperson informed the Sunday World. In doing so, members of the public are being asked to refrain from visiting the hospital or the family's home in Mullingar. News surrounding Monday evening's incident has continued to be felt far and wide, emotions that have been exacerbated by the fact little Abdur had only celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday. Funeral of four-year-old Abdur Rehman takes place in Mullingar

The funeral of the four-year-old boy who died after being knocked down in Mullingar on Easter Monday has taken place. Hundreds of people gathered for prayers at the Islamic Cultural Society Centre in Mullingar this afternoon. Four-year-old Abdur Rehman will be buried in Newcastle cemetery in Dublin this afternoon. Yesterday, friends of the family spoke of their devastation and said the little boy was loved by all who knew him. The young boy, who was killed just yards from his home in Farranshock, a new development on the outskirts of Mullingar, had celebrated his fourth birthday at the weekend. Family friend Naveed Iqbal said Abdur had not even opened all his birthday presents. "They were keeping some for him so he could open one every day," he explained. "The family just moved here a few months ago. We helped them move. They are a hardworking family, same as everyone here. It's so sad for everyone." Mr Iqbal said Abdur's father, originally from Pakistan, had been living in Ireland for 20 years. His mother is a medical student.
