NMC chief issues notices to 5 officials
Nagpur: Despite a blanket ban on hawkers on Sitabuldi Main Road and their relocation to Maharajbagh Road, many vendors returned to set up stalls on the banned stretch on May 25. The hawkers' act, violated instructions issued by top civic officials, has prompted immediate action from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari on Monday issued show cause notices to five senior officials, questioning their failure to enforce the orders. Those served notices include two assistant municipal commissioners (Dharampeth zone and encroachment dept), and a superintendent (enforcement dept). The officials have been asked to explain why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them under the Maharashtra Civil Services (Conduct) Rules and the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949. According to the notice, multiple instructions were issued earlier to ensure no hawkers return to the Sitabuldi Main Road. However, their reappearance indicates a serious lapse in supervision and enforcement. The civic body has warned of strict disciplinary action if satisfactory explanations are not submitted within three days.

Contractors Give Two Hoots To Civic Chiefs' Road Digging Ban
1 2 Nagpur: Days after municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari issued a strict diktat banning all road excavation from June 1 and mandating full restoration of dug-up roads by May 31, violations continue to be glaringly visible across Nagpur. On Monday, TOI found fresh excavation underway near the busy Old Katol Road square in Mangalwari zone, where a private telecom company was laying underground cables. The digging was in direct defiance of the civic chief's May 27 order. Following a TOI query, chief engineer Manoj Talewar directed the Mangalwari zone office to initiate immediate checks and action. A similar case of unauthorised road work was observed near the State CID office in west Nagpur. Even in the Narendra Nagar area, TOI found road digging was under way. The May 27 high-level review meeting chaired by Chaudhari laid out clear consequences: failure to restore roads dug up for civic works by May 31 would result in steep fines and possible criminal prosecution. He also imposed a blanket ban on fresh road digging during the monsoon across all departments and private utility agencies, warning that violations would trigger police complaints and penalties for negligent engineers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Quedas no banheiro: Como evitar? Under the Pora River Pollution Abatement Project, the NMC's public health engineering (PHE) department dug up over 500km of roads in South-West, South, and Kamptee assembly segments for laying sewer lines. However, only 100km of work was completed so far, and in light of the June 1 ban, PHE superintendent engineer Shweta Banerjee confirmed the department halted fresh digging. "The focus is now on restoring previously dug-up stretches. Around 80% of the restoration was completed, and work is ongoing to finish the remaining 20%," she said, adding that most incomplete sections lie in the South and Kamptee constituencies. Banerjee clarified that only emergency works, such as water pipeline repairs and strengthening interconnections under AMRUT 1.0, will be permitted during the monsoon. Chaudhari also stressed that no debris or rubble should remain unattended, especially in slum pockets where sewer works are underway. Contractors were warned to clear sites thoroughly or face penalties. The sanitation department has been tasked with monitoring compliance. With monsoon approaching, Chaudhari's ultimatum sends a clear message: incomplete roads and public inconvenience will no longer be tolerated. Yet, as the latest findings show, enforcement remains a challenge on the ground.

15 vertical gardens to help prevent garbage dumping in rivers, drains
1 2 3 N agpur: Urban beautification and environment conservation will go hand-in-hand as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will soon set up 15 vertical gardens across the city. These gardens will be installed on the protective walls of bridges over the Nag and Pohra rivers and other major drains with an aim to reduce pollution and stop the widespread dumping of garbage into these water bodies. According to civic officials, many citizens dump garbage into the drains from the parapet walls along main roads. To discourage this practice and improve the appearance of the city, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari directed the creation of vertical gardens on these walls. The project is expected to cost Rs5.10 crore and will feature a variety of decorative plant species, including Riho, Jade, Pandanus, Purple Heart and Wedelia. Wire mesh will be installed on the front side of the gardens for safety and protection. NMC has already given administrative approval, and tenders will be invited shortly. A detailed survey identified 15 specific locations across the city for installation of the gardens. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Officials said the vertical gardens will not only enhance the visual appeal of the city's busy roads but also serve an important environmental purpose by discouraging waste dumping and helping improve the condition of the city's water bodies. Pilot Deadline Missed, IITMS Signal Installation at 10 Junctions to be Completed in Two Weeks
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is racing against time to complete the pilot phase of its ambitious Rs197 crore Intelligent and Integrated Traffic Management System (IITMS). At a review meeting held on Wednesday, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari directed the electrical department to finish installing smart signals at 10 key city junctions by June 15. Software operations will commence simultaneously from the NMC's command and control centre at its headquarters. Originally, the pilot project was scheduled for completion by April 30. After missing this deadline, the agency rescheduled it to May end. However, that deadline was also missed. Now, the civic chief has issued a stern ultimatum to the private contractor, warning of strict penal action if the revised June 15 deadline is not met. According to Rajendra Rathod, executive engineer of the NMC's electrical department, 90% of the required materials — including IT and controller boxes and other installation components — have already reached Nagpur. "Civil and cable-laying works are nearly complete. We're now ready to proceed with signal and system installation," he said. The pilot project is being executed in collaboration with Kerala-based system integrator Keltron and the city's traffic police. The selected junctions for this phase include Alankar Talkies, Kachipura, Bajaj Nagar, Abhyankar Nagar, Ajit Bakery T-point, LAD Square, Laxmi Nagar, Shraddhanandpeth Square, and Deekshabhoomi Square. The pilot will also feature trial runs of two to three of the planned 25 speed radars and LED-based variable messaging signboards, designed to provide commuters with real-time traffic updates. Once operational, the AI-powered IITMS will replace conventional signal timers with 171 adaptive traffic signals across the city. These signals will respond dynamically to live traffic conditions, potentially reducing travel time by 28-48% and increasing average vehicle speeds by 46-62%. Beyond easing congestion, the IITMS will include features such as red-light violation detection, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), speed monitoring, and CCTV-based surveillance. All data will be fed into a centralized command centre, enabling automated e-challans and simulated emergency traffic control. The entire project is scheduled for completion by December 2026, with Keltron responsible for installation and a five-year maintenance period. Once the pilot phase is declared successful, the NMC will begin city-wide upgrades of the remaining 161 signals and associated infrastructure.
