DOHA: The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, represented by the Department of Call and Religious Guidance, has concluded the 'Abjad' course, one of its most prominent Quranic and educational summer programmes. The programme targeted male children aged 5 to 9 years old, with the aim of teaching them the principles of correct reading of the alphabet and the Holy Quran, memorizing short Surahs, and instilling Islamic values and morals in their souls. The ministry explained in a statement that the course was held over a period of one month in three mosques: Ibrahim Hassan Al Asmakh Mosque in the Al Thumama area, Hamad bin Nasser Mosque in Hazm Al Markhiya, and Saud bin Abdullah Al Naqdan Mosque in the southern Muither area. Some 326 students benefited from the course, who committed to attending and participating regularly four days a week (from Sunday to Wednesday), during the morning period from 8am to 11am. It noted that the programme focused on teaching children spelling lessons from the 'Spelling Lessons' book, approved by Quran teaching centers, as the foundation for mastering reading. Students learned the names of single and compound letters, vowel sounds, tanween, long vowels and soft letters, and other skills for correct pronunciation. It explained that the students were divided into levels, including beginners who studied the first and second lessons, the second level from lessons one to six, and advanced students from lessons one to ten, in addition to memorizing short surahs from Surat An-Nas to Surat Az-Zalzalah. All students also memorized basic Surahs, including Surah Al-Fatihah, ten Surahs from Surah Al-Fil to Surah An-Nas, Ayat Al-Kursi, and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. They also focused on the practical application of ablution and prayer, and taught daily supplications and Islamic etiquette, such as etiquette for dealing with parents, teachers, the mosque, and the Holy Quran, as well as etiquette for eating, entering, and exiting. The daily programme included educational and cultural activities, physical games, and educational competitions with incentive prizes for outstanding students. In addition, recreational trips were organized in coordination with official government entities, including purposeful skill-based and recreational activities. The closing ceremony of the course was filled with joy, as students were honoured and presented with certificates of participation. Parents were also present, expressing their happiness with the purposeful educational programs organized by the ministry during the summer vacation. The Department of Da'wah and Religious Guidance confirmed that the organisation of the 'Abjad' course, supervised by the Department of the Holy Quran and its Sciences, comes within the framework of the Ministry of Endowments' efforts to make the most of the summer vacation time for children and youth, through programs that combine Quranic education, instilling values, developing skills, and purposeful entertainment.
