Kanthapuram condemns detention of nuns
All India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary and president of Kerala Muslim Jamat Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar has expressed deep concern over the rising attacks on minorities in north India. In a statement here on Wednesday, he condemned the alarming incident of two Malayali nuns being mobbed and detained in Chhattisgarh over allegations of conversion and trafficking. 'State borders should not hinder education, employment, or travel beyond administrative purposes,' he pointed out. He cautioned that the attack on the nuns had the potential to erode the country's diversity, secularism, and communal harmony. Drawing parallels, Musliar recalled a previous incident where students from northern States, who had come to Kerala to study at local orphanages, were unfairly suspected of human trafficking and denied their right to education. He warned that mob violence against minorities would erode India's legacy of unity, fraternity, and communal harmony, harming its global standing and violating fundamental rights. Citing concerns over voter list revisions in Bihar and disenfranchisement in Assam, he stressed the importance of collective vigilance and cooperation to protect India's diversity and unity.

Deleted, not denied: The truth behind Kanthapuram's claim on Nimisha Priya's reprieve
A curious development unfolded on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) morning about the reported commutation of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya's death sentence in Yemen. An ANI tweet about the reprieve, shared by Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar on X, disappeared from his social media handle. On Monday night, Mr. Aboobacker Musliar had announced that Yemeni authorities had waived the death sentence following a series of discussions involving scholars appointed by senior Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omer bin Hafiz, Northern Yemen representatives and international diplomats. The news had been widely reported by media outlets, including ANI, which Mr. Aboobacker Musliar had shared on his X handle. However, when ANI deleted the original tweet, it automatically disappeared from Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's X handle, leading to confusions and speculations about Nimisha Priya's fate. Kanthapuram maintains stance Mr. Aboobacker Musliar maintained on Tuesday that the Yemeni authorities had indeed decided to revoke the death sentence handed to Nimisha Priya, accused of murdering Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. According to sources close to Mr. Aboobacker Musliar, the next step is negotiating with Talal Abdo Mahdi's family to determine Nimisha Priya's sentence – either life imprisonment or release upon payment of blood money. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's claim about waiving of Nimisha Priya's execution was confirmed on Monday night by Sarhan Shamsan Al Wiswabi, a Yemeni activist and spokesperson for the Action Council for Talal Mahdi's Justice in Yemen, through a Facebook post. Mr. Wiswabi said in his post that due to the strong intervention of religious scholars, the death sentence was waived. He said it would now be either life imprisonment or release on payment of blood money. Her planned July 16 execution was earlier deferred following multiple interventions. The Centre claimed it had intervened, while Mr. Aboobacker Musliar had claimed he did so through his close association with revered Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omer bin Hafiz. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's intervention, however, sparked a controversy. Several individuals and groups tried to claim credit for the reprieve, while others criticised him for his involvement. Some Keralites opposing Mr. Aboobacker Musliyar's efforts went further, expressing sympathy for Talal Abdo Mahdi's family on Facebook. They urged Abdul Fatah Mahdi, the victim's brother, to reject any potential pardon for Nimisha Priya and instead advocated for her capital punishment, adding complexity to the situation.

Yemen waives Nimisha Priya's death sentence, claims Kanthapuram
The Yemeni authorities have decided to revoke the execution of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse awaiting capital punishment for the alleged murder of Yemen national Talal Abdo Mahdi. The confirmation of the decision came on Monday night from the office of India's Grand Mufti and Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, whose last-minute intervention through the Sufi scholars of Yemen had secured the postponement of Nimish Priya's execution scheduled for July 16. A team of Yemeni scholars, appointed by Sheikh Habib Omer bin Hafiz, a respected Sufi scholar in Yemen, at the request of Mr. Aboobacker Musliar, worked alongside Northern Yemen's government representatives and international diplomats to mediate an agreement, resulting in the decision to revoke Nimisha Priya's execution. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's claim has been confirmed by Sarhan Shamsan Al Wiswabi, a Yemeni activist and spokesperson for the Action Council for Talal Mahdi's Justice in Yemen, through a Facebook post on Monday. Mr. Wiswabi said in his post that due to the strong intervention of religious scholars, the death sentence was waived. He said it would now be either release from prison or life imprisonment. Following the commutation of her death sentence, Nimisha Priya's fate now hangs in the balance between two possibilities: serving a life sentence or securing her release upon payment of diya or blood money. However, subsequent matters will be determined following further negotiations with the family of the deceased, Talal Abdo Mahdi.

Nimisha Priya execution stay: Sunni leader Kanthapuram's intervention pays off
The Yemeni government has frozen the execution of Nimisha Priya, the Malayali nurse awaiting capital punishment for allegedly killing a Yemeni national named Talal Abdo Mahdi. Her execution was earlier scheduled for Wednesday (July 16). The government stayed the execution following the intervention of prominent Yemeni Islamic scholar Habib Omar bin Hafiz on the request of influential Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar, in a Facebook post at 2.20 p.m. on Tuesday (July 15, 2025), said the Yemeni government stayed the execution. He posted the government order in Arabic on his Facebook page. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar thanked everyone who prayed for Nimisha's life. He said 'God's grace be on them all.' Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's last-minute intervention on Sunday sparked a ray of hope as all other efforts to obtain a reprieve for Nimisha had failed. He made the intervention following an appeal by a few politicians led by Congress leader Chandy Oommen. Sheikh Habib Omar bin Hafiz, a much-respected scholar who is a member of the Yemen Shura Council and a follower of the Sufi order, entrusted his brother's son Habib Abdurahman Ali Mashoor to initiate talks with Mahdi's family. Mr. Mashoor held several rounds of talks with Mahdi's brother. Hudaida State court chief justice and Yemen Shura Council member too took part in the discussions on the request of Mr. Hafiz. Sources close to Mr. Aboobacker Musliar said the murder of Mahdi, which took place in 2017, had made a deep emotional impact not only on the family of the deceased but also among the community at Dhamar in Yemen. 'That was the reason why none could influence the family so far,' said one of the aides of Mr. Aboobacker Musliar. He said Mahdi's family could not reject the request of Mr. Hafiz. 'Sheikh Habib Omar wields such respect among the people in Yemen. We are all hopeful that Mahdi's family will forgive Nimisha Priya,' he said.

Kanthapuram talks to Yemeni scholar in bid to save Nimisha Priya's life
A last-minute intervention by India's Grand Mufti and Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar has sparked hope for Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya who is scheduled to be executed by the Yemeni government on July 16. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar has reportedly reached out to the brother of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the victim in the case, through prominent Yemeni Islamic scholar Habib Omar bin Hafiz in a last-ditch effort to seek a reprieve for Nimisha. A court in Yemen sentenced Nimisha to death for allegedly murdering her business partner Mahdi. The Yemeni Supreme Court upheld the death sentence in 2023. Onus on family In a final bid to save Nimisha, Mr. Aboobacker Musliar has appealed to Mahdi's family to pardon her. With her execution looming, Nimisha's fate now rests on the victim's family's willingness to accept $1 million in diyah (blood money) and grant her clemency. Sources close to Mr. Aboobacker Musliar have been hopeful that Habib Omar's respected status and influence in Yemeni society will help secure a favourable outcome for Nimisha. Humanitarian concerns Although Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's office has not commented about his intervention, his close aides said that his efforts were driven by humanitarian concerns. 'There is nothing more virtuous than saving the life of a fellow being,' they said. Meanwhile, Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's intervention has drawn criticism on social media, with some questioning his priorities and asking why he did not help others languishing in Indian jails.
