Mystique Within The Mundane: surrealist sculpture showcase planned
A multimedia artist who employs a "signature style of surrealism" is set to exhibit in Bradford.
The Mystique Within The Mundane by Abraham Emajaro will run at Trapezium Gallery on Kirkgate from Saturday, July 26 to Saturday, August 16.
The exhibition showcases sculpture and photography by Emajaro.
Born in Bradford in 1961, Emajaro is a British-Nigerian artist whose work is influenced by his West African heritage.
The artist, who has been a self-taught professional since the early 1980s, explores the subconscious in his work - with influences including Robert Rauschenberg.
Found objects play a key role in Emajaro's art.
Emajaro said: "I passionately collect an eclectic mix of domestic and commercial junk, and produce an array of box construction, sculpture, and assemblage, influenced by subjects such as ritual, mythology, iconography, and memory."
The retrospective exhibition also includes new works, such as Sparrow Haven Mask.
Emajaro explained: "It's a reimagined African tribal mask totem, constructed using old, reclaimed church organ pipes, made of cedar wood, dating back to 1901."
The exhibition will also feature photographic prints.
Trapezium Gallery is open Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 11am and 3pm.
There will be refreshments and a chance to meet Emajaro at a launch event on Saturday, July 26, from 12pm to 3pm.
