Senator calls for fairness, historical clarity in Sarawak Day Message
Abun Sui Anyit KUCHING (July 21): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Senator Abun Sui Anyit has expressed concern over what he described as persistent imbalances in Sarawak's development and governance in his Sarawak Day message. Abun said development in the state remains uneven, particularly between the coastal regions and the interior. 'Likewise, government administration—especially at the management and political leadership levels—remains imbalanced, with certain ethnic groups appearing to dominate governance and administration in Sarawak. Is this situation orchestrated or simply coincidental?' he questioned in the message. Despite these issues, the PKR Hulu Rajang division chief said it is not too late for Sarawakians to address the situation before it worsens. 'I pray that Sarawak continues to prosper within a fair and just Malaysia, and may the spirit of July 22 continue to ignite the patriotism of the sons and daughters of the Land of the Hornbill towards this region (Sarawak) and to our nation, Malaysia,' he said. He urged the younger generation of Sarawakians to appreciate the state's history and the struggles of their forebears, and to uphold the spirit of independence with pride, warning against forgetting the past amid modern development. According to him, July 22, 1963 marked a significant historical milestone when Sarawak attained self-rule from British colonial administration, which was a crucial step leading to the formation of Malaysia on September 16 the same year. 'Sarawak is a region rich in culture, natural resources, and a strong spirit of unity. Therefore, Sarawak Day not only celebrates independence but is also a time to reflect on our journey in pursuing justice, autonomy, and the rights enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' he added. Abun also highlighted the significance of July 22, 1963, when Sarawak attained self-rule from British colonial administration, which he described as a crucial step toward the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. He nonetheless noted there has been confusion and questions as to why July 22 is often referred to as Sarawak Day rather than 'Sarawak Independence Day' as gazetted when it was declared as a public holiday in 2016. He said the term 'Sarawak Day' is the official phrase used in government documents since its initial declaration in 2016, although from a historical and factual perspective, this day marks Sarawak's independence and freedom from colonialism. 'The choice of terminology may have been made out of political caution and federal sensitivities in the past. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that the people of Sarawak deserve to know and call our history by its proper name. July 22 should be remembered as Sarawak Independence Day—just as Sabah celebrates its Independence Day on August 31, 1963,' he said. Abun Sui Anyit history sarawak day Sarawak development

Senator eyes VP post in PKR to become ‘Borneo voice' in party
Abun Sui Anyit KUCHING (May 11): Senator Abun Sui Anyit has announced that he is contesting for a vice-president (VP) post in Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), with the intention of representing 'the voice of Borneo and the Dayak community' in the party's central leadership. The PKR Hulu Rajang division head is among the 12 candidates vying for the four VP positions for the 2025-2028 term. Others include Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, federal ministers Chang Lih Kang and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and a deputy minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan. The other candidates are Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran, PKR Hulu Selangor chief Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan, former Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian, National Entrepreneurship Institute chairman Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, and PKR Jempol chief Manivanan Gowin. The PKR National Congress is scheduled to be held in Johor Bahru this May 21 to 24. On his contest, Abun expressed hope that the delegates at the congress would give the chance for a Borneo representative as one of the elected four VPs. 'Together, we can create a history for a Borneo representative in this national party, which represents various races and religions. 'If elected, I will be a leader who listens and is determined to bring the voice of the grassroots to the party's leadership level.' Abun also called upon fellow PKR delegates to not belittle those whom they did not support. 'The party election is a family contest. 'We will celebrate the winners, but we will still embrace the non-winners,' added Abun, also PKR Sarawak information chief. On a relevant matter, Abun affirmed his support for Nurul Izzah Anwar to be elected as PKR deputy president in the coming election. Nonetheless, he also acknowledged both Nurul Izzah and incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as the party's 'big names' – each being highly capable and having their own strengths and advantages. 'If possible, I would like both of them to be deputy presidents I and II. 'However, the PKR constitution stipulates only one deputy president's post. Like it or not, I have to make a rather difficult decision to choose between the two. 'Both have produced a great impact on the party. And I hope that whatever happens, both of them should still be given important roles to lead the party to a more glorious direction,' said Abun. Abun Sui Anyit Parti Keadilan Rakyat party election

Senator urges moratorium on major urban, coastal projects after Ulu Baram tragedy
Abun says the Ulu Baram incident highlighted the dire state of rural infrastructure and called for the swift construction of proper roads and bridges in remote areas to prevent further loss of lives and property. MIRI (April 25): Parti Keadilan Sarawak (PKR) senator Abun Sui has made a call for the state government to impose a moratorium on major urban and coastal infrastructure projects and channel funds towards urgently needed rural road connectivity instead. His statement came following the recent drowning of a teacher and her daughter in Ulu Baram. The senator said the incident highlighted the dire state of rural infrastructure and called for the swift construction of proper roads and bridges in remote areas to prevent further loss of lives and property. In representing Belaga, he said: 'As one who comes from the rural area, I have always wanted the government to prioritise rural connectivity.' 'Large-scale projects costing millions in urban areas must be put on hold until rural populations have access to safe roads and bridges,' he reasoned. The victims in the recent case, a teacher and his 9-year-old daughter, were swept away by strong currents while crossing Sungai Sengayan in Ulu Baram on April 13. Their stalled 4WD vehicle had been trapped mid-river. The girl's body was recovered the next day, while her father's body was found five days later. The girl's mother and the driver survived. The tragedy sparked outrage on social media, with Sarawakians questioning the state's priorities after six decades of independence, during which many rural communities still lack basic infrastructure. Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said a bridge across Sungai Sengayan in Ulu Baram is expected to be tendered next month. Seven other log bridges in Ulu Baram are also slated for upgrading next year, after earlier ones were abandoned by logging firms. A glaring connectivity gap persists in Baram and nearby districts, in which a month prior, a broken timber bridge near Telang Usan cut off access to 12 villages and a school. Teachers from SK Long Luteng were forced to cross the damaged structure on foot. Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who oversees infrastructure and port development, has acknowledged that RM 15 million allocated for road and bridge repairs is insufficient, especially in high-risk areas for erosion and landslides.
