Ajman bans electric scooters on roads and public streets
Ajman residents, take note – electric scooters are now officially banned in the emirate on public streets and roads. The police in Ajman are taking measurements to increase safety across the emirate and have issued a statement regarding the use of electric scooters on roads. All types of two-wheeler scooters and e-vehicles are now not allowed to be used on public roads and streets and are only to be used in designated areas. The move comes after authorities observed an increase in reckless behaviour from riders, including travelling the wrong way on a one-way road, not wearing appropriate safety gear and entering a road from an exit. — ajmanpoliceghq (@ajmanpoliceghq) August 14, 2025 The ban on electric scooters is a wider push for ridership safety across the UAE, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There have been similar crackdowns by authorities of the other emirates, warning of reckless behaviour and discouraging violations. Some UAE residents are calling for stricter regulations, and a special unit in Dubai was set up to monitor violations by cyclists and e-scooter riders. Ajman police have also recently banned bicycles on public roads and streets, encouraging cyclists to only use them in designated areas. Accident Free Day Speaking of safety, the UAE recently announced an Accident Free Day on August 25, where drivers can get up to 4 black points removed from their license for avoiding driving violations and trouble on the roads of the UAE on this particular day. 5 things you need to know about Dubai's Accident Free Day 2025
The Ministry of the Interior has announced the return of Accident Free Day in the United Arab Emirates. The annual event aims to encourage road safety in Dubai and the other emirates ahead of the start of the school year. It's an initiative that sees those taking part get four black points removed from their licence. What is Accident Free Day? Accident Free Day is a national initiative which promotes safe driving, reinforces traffic rules and raise awareness. As part of Accident Free Day in the UAE, drivers are offered the chance to get four black points deducted from their driving licence if they agree to a pledge. The pledge reinforces basic traffic rules and, if you stick to it when Accident Free Day comes around, you'll get four points off your licence. In previous years, Dubai Police has said that the initiative has led to a remarkable decrease in traffic accidents and it's hoped that 2025 will see more of the same. You'll only get points deducted if they are already on your licence. So, if you have zero points, you can't then be on minus four points after Accident Free Day. When is Accident Free Day? Accident Free Day is held on the first day of the academic calendar, and that means that this year's event will arrive on Monday August 25. While the event itself is on Monday August 25, you have to sign up before that to make sure that you're taking part. Who's eligible and how do I sign up? To sign up you'll need to head to the Ministry of the Interior website here and sign in with your UAE Pass. Once you've signed in, you'll be asked to agree to the Accident Free Day pledge. Tick the box underneath the pledge to agree to the terms. An email confirmation will then be sent to the address you signed up for the UAE Pass with. You will then receive a certificate of participation in recognition of the part you'll play in Accident Free Day. What are the rules? The rules for Accident Free Day relate to the pledge that participants need to sign ahead of time. The pledge is extremely straightforward; it says: I will maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of me I will yield to pedestrians at crossings I will always wear my seatbelt I will adhere to the speed limits I will not use a handheld mobile phone while driving I will give way to emergency vehicles, police, public service vehicles, and official convoys Stick to these rules on the day and you'll get four black points deducted. When do I get 4 points deducted? If you've signed up to the pledge and stuck to the conditions on Accident Free Day then you can expect the points to be deducted from your licence on Monday September 15. The points will be deducted automatically and electronically. Black point reduction: UAE drivers to hit 'reset button' on road habits for ‘Accident-Free Day'
UAE drivers are rushing to register for the Ministry of Interior's 'Accident-Free Day' pledge, which offers the chance to have four black points removed from their traffic records by committing to safe driving on August 25, 2025. The initiative coincides with the first day of the new school year and aims to raise awareness about road safety while reducing traffic violations, especially in school zones where children's safety is a priority. Recommended For You For 29-year-old Ahmed Salim, the campaign comes at a crucial time. 'I already have 12 black points, mostly from speeding fines,' he said. 'Getting four points deducted is a relief. This pledge is a good reminder to be more disciplined and focused on the road. I plan to treat that day as a challenge to keep calm and follow every rule strictly.' Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. Motorists across the emirates welcomed the initiative 'Everyone who knew me, especially my closest friend, called me to register for the pledge. He told me, 'I hope you learn from this one'.' This campaign is part of a series of traffic safety initiatives launched by the UAE over the past several years. These programmes have focused on encouraging responsible driving behaviour and rewarding those who adhere to traffic laws, helping to foster a culture of safety on the roads. Long-time driver Khaled Mansour, 41, has spent nearly two decades navigating the UAE's roads. As a Jordanian expat who frequently commutes between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain for work, he views the initiative as a positive mental exercise. 'It's a nice challenge to be consciously aware of my driving all day,' he said. 'I'll keep an eye on my speed, avoid distractions like using my phone, and always give way to others. It feels like hitting a reset button on my driving habits.' The initiative aims to reward those who commit to the pledge and adhere to traffic laws and regulations, particularly wearing seat belts, not exceeding speed limits and maintaining a safe distance. Motorists must also respect pedestrian priority and safety, avoid distractions like phone use, and give way to emergency vehicles, ambulances, police, and official convoys. Fatima Ali, a 29-year-old Sharjah resident, hopes the campaign will help her reduce her current six black points. 'I'm motivated to drive more carefully, especially with schools reopening soon,' she said. Fatima admitted that driving can sometimes be distracting, especially with traffic. When she has to wait for long periods, she tends to drive without paying full attention to some road safety rules. The pledge is available online through the Ministry of Interior's official portal. Drivers who successfully complete the day without committing any violations will have their points deducted electronically on September 15, 2025, without needing to visit any service centres. 'Our goal is to create a safer environment for all road users by encouraging adherence to traffic regulations,' said Brigadier Engineer Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council. 'These campaigns help save lives and protect property by promoting responsible driving across the UAE.' As the new school year approaches, the 'Accident-Free Day' pledge offers drivers both a practical incentive and a timely reminder to prioritise safety on the roads. waad@ Waad Barakat is a Special Correspondent covering security topics, from law enforcement to local courts.
