How will the Dolphins deploy their new-look backfield in 2025?

How will the Dolphins deploy their new-look backfield in 2025? The Miami Dolphins are no strangers to running back committees throughout their history and they're turning the page to a new one in 2025 with De'Von Achane and Jaylen Wright leading the charge. In addition, there are two new runners in South Florida: veteran free agent Alexander Mattison and sixth-round rookie Ollie Gordon II. After three seasons, the Dolphins cut ties with Raheem Mostert earlier this offseason which clears the way for Wright to see a lot more field time, possibly as a bulk-carry runner. Achane, who claimed the top spot in the backfield last season, could be utilized a lot more as a receiver this season to build on last year's past catching success. More of Achane at receiver would open the door for the second-year Wright to be more of a factor in 2024. Achane caught 78 passes in 2024, and that number could have been much higher, if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa didn't miss significant time. In total last year, Achane averaged 4.5 receptions across the 2024 season, but in games Tagovailoa started, that mark was 6.1 catches. Achane will still see plenty of rushing attempts, but his prowess as a pass catcher could give the Dolphins and head coach Mike McDaniel several creative personal options with both he and Wright on the field at the same time. Wright finished his rookie season with 68 rushes for 249 yards, but judgement about the back should be withheld until he is given a substantial increase in work. While he averaged just 3.7 yards per attempt, Wright only had one game with more than 10 carries after Achane was forced to leave a Week 5 game with a concussion. Wright ran 13 times for 86 yards (6.6 yards per carry) in that win against the Patriots, showing signs he can handle a workload. With Achane and Wright as the one-two punch, don't discount Gordon getting in the mix for quality touches. The 2023 Doak Walker Award winner regressed in his final collegiate season at Oklahoma State. But in the pro ranks, he has the potential to be a lead-back of the future, although he'll start his career specializing in spot scenarios. Gordon could potentially help Miami improve on their short-yardage production. Behind the newly added Jonah Savaiinaea and James Daniels, Gordon could be a short-yardage back with the ability to be a pile-pusher while also adding viable receiving threat out of the backfield who recorded 80 receptions in college. Mattison, who spent five seasons in Minnesota and one in Las Vegas, rushed for an average of 31.3 yards in his 89 career games with 15 rushing touchdowns. He has also added 136 receptions for 1,012 yards and seven receiving touchdowns. Mattison will have to prove that he's more worthy of touches than Gordon, though. With fullback Alec Ingold also in the mix, there will likely be five players in the Dolphins' backfield. That versatile group should offer coaches plenty of scheme-diverse options this fall.

De'Von Achane tells haters to 'keep the same energy' when Dolphins prove they aren't soft

De'Von Achane tells haters to 'keep the same energy' when Dolphins prove they aren't soft The Miami Dolphins have dealt with a "soft" label for much of the last three years and they haven't done much to dispel it. 'That's the thing with narratives," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters shortly after his team lost 30-17 on a cold Thanksgiving night at Lambeau Field. "There's one way to change them and so my expectation would be: the naysayers, you prove them right, they'll be louder. That's part of the territory. You carry that until you do something about it, and unfortunately, we didn't." Proving those naysayers wrong is a focal point for the Dolphins heading into the 2025 season. And running back De'Von Achane is already challenging the haters. "I feel like we go out there and practice every day, and we are going to show when the season comes everybody who was saying those little remarks, just make sure they keep the same energy," Achane said. The effort to get tougher, bigger, and meaner in the offseason was especially evident in the 2025 NFL draft. Miami's first three draft picks weighed about 1,000 pounds collectively and first-rounder Kenneth Grant and second-rounder Jonah Savaiinaea will likely start right away on the defensive and offensive line, respectively. Coupled with free agency additions like offensive linemen James Daniels and Larry Borom, as well as blocking tight end Pharaoh Brown, the Dolphins are hopeful to see improvements in the trenches. After leading the NFL in yards per carry in 2023 with an average of 5.1, the Dolphins' plummeted to 28th in 2024 with 4.0 yards per rush attempt. With a retooled front and some more buy-in from players this offseason, Achane is eyeing big numbers in 2025. And he's ready to silence the doubters along the way.

Miami Dolphins' Chop Robinson, De'Von Achane: 2025 team chemistry better; no missed days

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel wants his players to be focused, on-time, self-disciplined and present, physically and emotionally, in 2025. It appears they've gotten the message. "I just say as a team, we're putting that energy and we're here every day, we be putting in that energy and we're here like every day, we're not missing days," running back De'Von Achane said. "Like you can see, like, this year's team is way different than last year's team." Advertisement After last season, some Dolphins players said there was some tardiness and some lack of total presence and focus at times. McDaniel believes an 8-9 finish last year helps send a clear message. The Dolphins must be more locked in, right away, in 2025. "I mean just everybody being here, you get to see the team chemistry like everybody just wants the same goal, everybody wants to be great," Dolphins edge rusher Chop Robinson said. "Everybody wants to win. So the only way to do that is doing it all together. So the chemistry is definitely better than it was last year." Dolphins' Chop Robinson: Chemistry better in 2025 The Dolphins are sorting out a potential trade for veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey. But it is clear that overall, Miami has strong voluntary attendance. Advertisement Reporters even saw some veteran players watching a recent rookie minicamp. "All the people being here, we're just building that chemistry early and not waiting until like, you know, when the season started, then trying to build like during the season," Achane said. Achane, for example, is somehow already the longest-tenured Dolphins running back. Achane is only 23 years old. He's listening intently to McDaniel's directive. Dolphins' De'Von Achane: This is going to be different "Yeah, most definitely about being present," Achane said. "Like you said, just how I mentioned everybody's here. Like, you know, we know it's voluntary, but like if you want to win, you want to win games, this is where it starts at. I feel we're doing a good job as that. As long as we keep that going we're going to see this season is going to be different than last year." Dolphins' De'Von Achane Reveals Goals for 2025 Season

The Miami Dolphins have some of the best skill position players in the NFL, including some of the fastest athletes in the league, such as wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Running back De'Von Achane is no exception, running a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in 2023, which was the fastest of any player at his position in that draft class. Speed isn't the end-all be-all, though, and Achane knows that. Coming off his sophomore season in the NFL, which saw him rack up 907 rushing yards on 203 carries, the Texas A&M product knows he still has room for improvement. Advertisement Achane is a home-run hitter, able to break off long runs any chance he has the ball in his hands. However, he is also prone to negative plays, losing yardage on 24.1 percent of his carries in 2024. The only other running backs worse in the category were Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers and Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb. Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane (28) rushes with the ball against the Buffalo Bills during the second half at Hard Rock Vinlove-Imagn Images 'Me trying to make a big play instead of like, just doing the right thing,' Achane told the Palm Beach Post. 'Me watching film, I feel like I left a lot of plays (out there). I feel like I could have did more.' There were positives to Achane's 2024 season, he was available in all 17 games as opposed to his rookie season when he missed six due to a knee injury. Advertisement "Staying healthy was the main just staying in the training room, just coming in on off days, making sure even if I'm not hurt, just being there. Seventeen, that's a long time. And I learned that from my rookie year.' Achane will look to be the featured back for Miami in 2025, as his former running mate Raheem Mostert departed for the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.
