Dolphins' De'Von Achane likely will miss practice this week because of calf injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins running back De'Von Achane likely will miss this week of practice as he nurses a calf injury, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday. Achane was sidelined for Miami's preseason game against the Lions on Saturday and was held out of the second day of joint practices at Detroit. McDaniel said the team is mostly being preventative by holding Achane out. 'Calves are the ones that you have to be super proactive, especially with explosive players," McDaniel said. "We don't want to have a long, strenuous, nagging issue. So we probably won't see De'Von this week after further assessment through the (past) weekend. But that's more preventative in nature just because — all trainers across the league have horror stories with calves if you're too aggressive coming back.' Achane has rushed for 1,707 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons for the Dolphins and is expected to be one of Miami's top offensive weapons this season. The Dolphins will host the Jacksonville Jaguars for one joint practice on Thursday before their preseason finale Saturday night. Defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who has been dealing with an undisclosed injury, will return to practice this week. And tight end Darren Waller could practice for the first time. Waller came out of retirement in July to sign a one-year deal with the Dolphins but has been working out separately from the team as he gets back into football shape. 'This is where we thought a realistic assessment would be made," McDaniel said, "and we're kind of making that daily. I'm expecting to see him sooner than later. I (thought) in the back of my mind that it would be this week, but I'm not going to just put him out there this week just because I said it before. I'm hopeful, but it's very soon.' Veteran visits The Dolphins hosted four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon on a free agent visit Monday. Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson sustained injuries over the past week, but McDaniel said bringing in Judon was not related to any potential long-term injuries to the team's linebackers. Judon had 41 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown in 15 starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. ___

De'Von Achane injury update: Dolphins RB sidelined with calf issue

De'Von Achane is set to be sidelined as the preseason winds down. Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Monday that the running back is dealing with a calf injury – a follow-up to the news that he first shared on Saturday. The Dolphins running back was said to be dealing with a soft tissue lower-body injury. McDaniel made the announcement following the team's preseason Week 2 win in Detroit, adding that they would evaluate Achane following their return to Miami. While the team didn't seem concerned about the running back's availability going forward, it is notable that he'll be missing time with just weeks to go until the regular season kicks off. Here is the latest on Achane. De'Von Achane injury update Achane is dealing with a calf injury and will likely be held out of practice this week, according to McDaniel. He added that the decision to keep Achane out of practice would be "preventative in nature," primarily because of the explosive athlete that he is, according to ESPN. McDaniel previously expressed on Saturday that Achane would miss somewhere between "days and weeks," but was optimistic about his availability for the regular season opener on Sept. 7. The trickiness of soft tissue injuries complicates matters for Achane's eventual return even though the running back's ailment isn't considered to be severe. Achane's absence opens the door for Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II to battle for the starting job. Dolphins RB depth chart Miami's running back room continues to shuffle players during the preseason. Achane is the clear starter, but now has a soft tissue injury that can be problematic going forward. The team already lost Alexander Mattison for the season after he injured his neck in the first preseason game. Mattison underwent neck surgery following the contest, officially ruling him out for the year. That has left Wright and Gordon to battle for that coveted second spot on the depth chart, with Gordon being the more efficient of the two thus far. Gordon, a sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State, is a different style of running back than what the Dolphins typically feature under McDaniel. A bruising, powerful runner, he can give the team a new dynamic and might be forced into more action than initially thought.

De'Von Achane fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions

Rotoworld Staff, De'Von Achane 2025 Fantasy Preview 2024: It was a rollercoaster season for one of the summer's most hotly-debated fantasy picks. Achane managed to stay healthy after his injury-marred rookie year but watched his efficiency nosedive as he took the rock over 200 times on the ground. Far and away the league leader in average rush yards over expected in 2023, Achane found himself seventh from the bottom in 2024. Although prolific as a pass catcher (78 receptions), Achane did not tack on long runs. Just 31.5 percent of his ground production came on carries of 15-plus yards after that number was a league-leading 54.0 as a rookie. What's changed: All that being said, Achane still finished as the RB6 by average PPR points. No. 2 Raheem Mostert has been swapped out for second-year pro Jaylen Wright. The sophomore is a legitimate workload threat to Achane, but you could argue that's not even a bad thing. Achane could be the (extremely) rare back fantasy managers actually want to handle the ball less between the tackles so he can better maintain his efficiency and big-play potential. 2025 Outlook: Achane is a difficult back to project, but the Dolphins still desperately need his hands in the passing game. It is difficult to see how he falls out of the top 12, and easy to envision him sneaking into the top five with even modest efficiency gains or better long-gain luck.
