Kota Kinabalu: Familia Superstore Sdn Bhd was fined RM6,000 or a year's jail for selling Al-Qur'an materials containing errors that contravened standards set by the Qur'an Text Printing Control and Licensing Board (LPPPQ). Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali meted out the sentence to the company after its Manager Abdul Malik Abdul Manap pleaded guilty to the charge against the company.
Advertisement The charge stated that the company had offered to sell decorative Qur'an verse frames which were found to contain textual inaccuracies at the company premises in One Borneo Hypermall, here, on March 25 this year. The act had violated Section 14(1) of the Qur'an Text Printing Act 1986 (Amendment P) 2023 (Act 326), which prohibits the sale of Qur'an materials with errors or those that deviate from officially approved writing conventions. Under the Section, it provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction. During mitigation, Abdul Malik asked for a lighter sentence saying that he did not know that the requirement to verify the accuracy of Quranic materials before offering them for sale. However, Prosecuting Officer Mechellister Saimon, from the Sabah branch of the Home Affairs Ministry's Enforcement and Control Division, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence on the grounds that that ignorance of the law was not a valid defence particularly when it involves sanctity of Qur'an verses.
