Arkansas Trucking Association comes out in support of English proficiency executive order
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – An executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday is receiving support from the Arkansas Trucking Association.
The order mandates English language proficiency for commercial truck drivers. The executive order and the ATA cite the importance of language proficiency as a matter of safety.
Trump executive order requires truck drivers to speak English
ATA had previously come out in favor of House Bill 1745, now Act 604, which mandates that commercial truck drivers in the state be proficient in English and hold a work authorization.
'After successfully advocating for solutions in Arkansas, we're pleased to see this issue elevated to the national level where it can have the greatest impact,' ATA President Shannon Newton said. 'Because trucking is fundamentally an interstate industry, a federal approach is necessary to ensure consistent enforcement of the safety standards across all highways.'
The executive order directs the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to strengthen inspection procedures and enforcement of existing English proficiency regulations.
