Man accused of kicking and biting officers, grabbing K9 during Garden City arrest

An Idaho man was arrested on suspicion of several felonies Monday after law enforcement said he battered four officers and a canine with the Garden City Police Department. Around 10 a.m., someone flagged down a Garden City officer near the intersection of North Horseshoe Bend Road and Lakeland Drive, reporting that a 49-year-old man was actively violating a protection order at a nearby home, according to a news release from police. Officers went to the residence and observed the man behind outbuildings on the property, according to the release. He fled from officers into a wooded area. Garden City police Chief Cory Stambaugh told the Idaho Statesman in an email that the man was prohibited from being at the house where he'd lived years ago. Stambaugh added that the police department has had many encounters with the man over the last few weeks, including several for trespassing. Because of the man's extensive criminal history and the police department's prior contacts with the man, a K9 was used to locate him, police said. While police attempted to arrest him, the man allegedly grabbed the canine's snout in an attempt to restrict the dog's airway, kicked three officers, and bit another, according to the release. The man was ultimately arrested and given medical care at the scene and later at a local hospital for minor injuries before being booked into the Ada County Jail. The officer who was bitten was also treated at a hospital for minor injuries. He was released earlier Monday. The man was arrested on suspicion of five felonies: first-degree stalking and four counts of battery on law enforcement. The man is also facing three misdemeanors for harassment of a police canine, resisting arrest and violating a domestic violence protection order. He'll have his initial hearing at the Ada County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Stambaugh said the man has a long history of violence toward law enforcement and the public. 'This is another example of the dangers your officers face each day,' Stambaugh wrote in the release. 'I doubt our officer went to work today thinking he would be bitten by another human being.'

Meridian mother arrested, accused of leaving child alone in hot vehicle

A Meridian mother was arrested over the weekend after police say she left her 2-year-old child alone in a locked vehicle. Officers responded to the parking lot of an Idaho Pizza Company off of Fairview Avenue in Meridian around 7:45 p.m. Sunday after a bystander reported seeing the child crying and visibly sweating inside the vehicle, according to a news release from the Meridian Police Department. An employee of the restaurant was able to open the vehicle's door and remove the child as officers arrived at the scene, police said. First responders immediately provided medical care to the child, who was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, according to the release. The vehicle's internal temperature was measured at over 130 degrees. The child's mother was arrested on suspicion of felony injury to a child and booked in the Ada County Jail, according to online jail records. Police said this incident was 'a critical reminder that as temperatures rise,' the inside of a vehicle can become 'dangerously hot' in just a few minutes. 'It is never safe to leave a child or pet in a parked car, even for a short time,' the release said. 'We urge all community members to take extra precautions during warmer months and to call 911 immediately if they see a child or pet left unattended in a vehicle.'

Friend who was with man fatally shot by Boise police in 2023 is sentenced

Two summers ago, Boise police officers approached Mario Garza and Payton Wasson as part of an investigation involving possible drug crimes and gang activity, and Wasson took off running while holding a gun. Police fatally shot him, sparking protests and questions about lethal force policies. Garza was arrested for alleged possession of fentanyl pills, according to previous Idaho Statesman reporting. On Friday, just blocks away from the site of the shooting, Garza was sentenced to four years fixed and six years indeterminate for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, meaning he could be eligible for parole after 48 months. The prosecution sought to paint Garza as a gang member with a troubling history, while the defense said Garza has shown remorse and been working in the kitchen as a jail inmate. 'I've never been able to see my part in things I've done in life,' Garza said, sitting with his lawyers and wearing a white Ada County Jail sweatshirt. 'I've made excuses to justify my actions.' Garza, 28, of Kuna, was initially charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver and an enhancement charge, according to court records. He was acquitted of the second possession charge and the enhancement was dropped. The defense asked for a seven-year sentence with just two years fixed, and for Garza to be placed in a rider program. The prosecution asked for at least 10 years fixed, with 20 years indeterminate. Judge James Cawthon said Garza expressed similar sentiments about his behavior at past sentencings. 'You're young and can do a lot of good in life,' Cawthon said. 'Getting to a point where you're ready to talk about what your issues are and reach out to other people about your issues and get help for your issues … that's real strength.' Cawthon also ordered Garza to pay over $200 in restitution and court costs.
