Commanders' roster ranked outside the top 10

The Washington Commanders' 2024 season was nothing short of magical. It was an unexpected result of mixing new ingredients together, ending up with a unicorn instead of a cake. The best possible outcome of combining GM Adam Peters' scouting ability, head coach Dan Quinn's leadership skills, and Jayden Daniels' ability to inspire and elevate the players around him. It wasn't a perfect season, ending at the NFC Championship game, but it was a far cry from winning just three games in the previous season. And, it rekindled the Commanders' fans' hopes that former owner Dan Snyder had previously squashed. Advertisement Peters and the rest of the organization understood the assignment this offseason: solidify the defense, give Daniels more weapons, and protect the quarterback. They've answered all of those questions and, as analyzed by Pro Football Focus, have earned the 11th-best roster in the NFL. The projected starting lineup includes each player's PFF grade from 2024. The Commanders' biggest strength in 2024 was Jayden Daniels. He ranked fifth among all qualified quarterbacks with a 90.6 PFF grade, and he led the league with a 1.5% turnover-worthy play rate, plus forced 52 missed tackles, which led all quarterbacks. As Daniels will return to the Commanders in 2025 (and many years in the future), his presence alone improves the roster dramatically. The additions the Commanders made during the offseason were helpful, too. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: PFF doesn't believe the Commanders have a top-10 roster

Commanders named as one of six contenders who could dethrone Eagles

Can the Washington Commanders move past the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025? The NFC East rivals met three times last season, with the Eagles winning two of those meetings, including the most important one in the NFC championship game. After a 55-23 loss in the NFC championship, Washington general manager Adam Peters spent the offseason planning to dethrone the Eagles. Peters focused on reinforcing the offensive line, adding depth at cornerback, and improving the run defense. Have the Commanders done enough to dethrone the Eagles in 2025? Jeffri Chadiha of named six teams he believed could dethrone the defending Super Bowl champions and Washington was one of those six teams: Washington was the feel-good story of 2024, which amounts to good and bad news. The good news is that head coach Dan Quinn immediately established a winning culture within a franchise that had been languishing for years and found a burgeoning superstar in quarterback Jayden Daniels, last year's Offensive Rookie of the Year. The bad news is that the Commanders won't be sneaking up on anybody any longer. General manager Adam Peters was once again aggressive in his second offseason on the job, as he engineered trades for former 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel and former Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Washington still needs more help when it comes to rushing the passer, but it's obvious how this team wants to win games. The Commanders plan on putting as much pressure as possible on opponents with Daniels engineering a prolific offense. Last season, Washington went on a seven-game winning streak before losing to Philadelphia in the NFC Championship Game. The Commanders scored at least 30 points in four of those wins, including 45 in a Divisional Round victory at Detroit and 36 in a Week 16 triumph over Philadelphia. The Commanders ultimately proved last season that they're not intimidated by anyone. This season will bring a different set of tests, including adjusting to how defenses attack Daniels in Year 2 -- remember the struggles that the highly touted Texans experienced last year after quarterback C.J. Stroud had exploded onto the scene as a rookie in 2023? -- and whether Washington can handle life as a perceived heavyweight. The other five teams on the list were the Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, Lions and Rams. Before anyone writes off the Commanders only because of the NFC championship result, remember that just weeks earlier, the Commanders, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, took down the Eagles in Week 16. Daniels passed for a career-high five touchdowns in Washington's win over Philly's No. 1-ranked defense. That was one of the Eagles' only three losses. Anytime you have a franchise quarterback, you can beat anyone. Finally, the Commanders have one in Daniels. Also, Washington should have a better roster in 2025.

Commanders Biggest Weakness Could Spoil Super Bowl Goal

When Adam Peters and Dan Quinn first entered the front doors of the Washington Commanders, they knew they had their work cut out for them. In 2023, the Commanders had one of the worst defenses in the league, no quarterback solution, and just four wins. That changed almost immediately with the two leaders. Advertisement Coming off a trip to the NFC Title game for the first time in 30 years including a nine-win jump from the year prior, Washington has done everything in their power to build a contender the right way. Having a franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels will certainly help with that. Despite all the good they have done, though, there is still one major weakness on the roster - the defensive line. Washington has some situational edge rushers in Frankie Luvu, and a dominant tackle in Daron Payne, but they do not have an every-down edge rusher on the roster right now. It's why Pro Football Focus believes the team is going to suffer a bit because of their defensive line. Advertisement 'Javon Kinlaw has improved a bit as a pass rusher,' PFF wrote, 'but has never earned above a 55.0 PFF overall grade in his five NFL seasons.' Things can change drastically if a Trey Hendrickson becomes available and is moved to the Commanders. But at the same time, it's not the end of the world that Washington has those needs either. Rebuilds do not happen overnight. Just because the Commanders are ahead of schedule does not mean they should rush their plans. Having a need at edge rusher with a defensive minded head coach is ok. It very well could be something that the team looks to address in later years. Commanders Secret To Roster Success Revealed in 'Attack' Talk

A running theme for some of the best general managers in the NFL today? "Aggressiveness.'' Maybe in this copycat league that is the result of what GM Howie Roseman in Philadelphia and GM Brett Veach in Kansas City do. By reputation, those two seem always on the lookout for one more move, one more success ... Advertisement One more Super Bowl berth. The Washington Commanders understand this well. They have one of the more aggressive executives in the league in Adam Peters. When Peters joined the team in the 2024 offseason - coming over from having been a top aide to GM John Lynch in San Francisco - the Commanders were coming off a four-win season that highlighted their needs along the offensive line, secondary, and quarterback position. They were also transitioning from the awful Dan Snyder era into a new approach permitted by the Josh Harris-led ownership group. Peters got right to work last year, building a roster that ended with 12 wins in the regular season ... and the Commanders reached the conference championship game for the first time in 30 years. Advertisement While head coach Dan Quinn plays a huge role in that success, he's made it clear how important Peters has been to the organization both before and after their playoff run. ... Especially after the team acquired top talent this offseason as well. 'First off, Adam and his team, man, they absolutely went after it,' Quinn said on the Rich Eisen Show. 'When you lose in the playoffs, there's a finality to it that you're not ready for. And so for Adam and the staff to attack free agency, to bring back key guys and add playmakers like Deebo [Samuel] and Laremy [Tunsil] through trades—I thought he just competed his (butt) off.' With a capable front office, the Commanders can now be seen as consistent contender moving forward. ... a fact helped greatly by the presence of a young franchise QB in Jayden Daniels. But it's also a fact helped greatly by an "attacking'' aggressiveness from the GM ... the trendiest way to win in today's NFL. Related: Commanders Brutal Late Stretch Will Decide Playoff Berth

Commanders 'Easy Pick' To Protect Star Quarterback Jayden Daniels

The New York Giants may have "won" the first round of the NFL Draft by landing an elite pass-rusher and their quarterback of the future. The Philadelphia Eagles - again - stole an athletic SEC defender. And the Dallas Cowboys added yet another offensive lineman named Tyler. Quietly, hidden amongst the hubbub in the NFC East, the Washington Commanders did exactly what they set out to do this offseason and this draft: Find help for star quarterback Jayden Daniels. Advertisement After trading for receiver Deebo Samuel as a weapon and Laremy Tunsil as a protector, Commanders' general manager Adam Peters drafted more offensive line insurance around Daniels by nabbing Oregon's Josh Conerly Jr. with the 29th pick. The surprise team of 2024 that went all the way to the NFC Championship Game has now added a star receiver, a Pro Bowl left tackle and a promising rookie who - at 6-5, 311 pounds - had the fastest 10-yard takeoff of any offensive lineman at the Scouting Combine. Conerly Jr. had been projected to go as early as 18th to the Seattle Seahawks in mock drafts. He raised eyebrows by holding his own in the Big Ten Championship Game against Penn State's Abdul Carter, who went No. 3 overall to the Giants. "This was a pick from the entire building," Peters said. "Throughout the process we fell more and more in love with him. "Kliff Kingsbury, Brian Johnson, Dan Quinn - I mean everybody was just really pumped to get him. We were holding our breath for a while thinking he might go ahead of us so we were thrilled when he was there. It was an easy pick for us to make."
