Commanders named as one of six contenders who could dethrone Eagles

USA Today26-05-2025

Can the Washington Commanders move past the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025? The NFC East rivals met three times last season, with the Eagles winning two of those meetings, including the most important one in the NFC championship game.
After a 55-23 loss in the NFC championship, Washington general manager Adam Peters spent the offseason planning to dethrone the Eagles. Peters focused on reinforcing the offensive line, adding depth at cornerback, and improving the run defense.
Have the Commanders done enough to dethrone the Eagles in 2025?
Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com named six teams he believed could dethrone the defending Super Bowl champions and Washington was one of those six teams:
Washington was the feel-good story of 2024, which amounts to good and bad news. The good news is that head coach Dan Quinn immediately established a winning culture within a franchise that had been languishing for years and found a burgeoning superstar in quarterback Jayden Daniels, last year's Offensive Rookie of the Year. The bad news is that the Commanders won't be sneaking up on anybody any longer.
General manager Adam Peters was once again aggressive in his second offseason on the job, as he engineered trades for former 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel and former Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Washington still needs more help when it comes to rushing the passer, but it's obvious how this team wants to win games. The Commanders plan on putting as much pressure as possible on opponents with Daniels engineering a prolific offense. Last season, Washington went on a seven-game winning streak before losing to Philadelphia in the NFC Championship Game. The Commanders scored at least 30 points in four of those wins, including 45 in a Divisional Round victory at Detroit and 36 in a Week 16 triumph over Philadelphia. The Commanders ultimately proved last season that they're not intimidated by anyone.
This season will bring a different set of tests, including adjusting to how defenses attack Daniels in Year 2 -- remember the struggles that the highly touted Texans experienced last year after quarterback C.J. Stroud had exploded onto the scene as a rookie in 2023? -- and whether Washington can handle life as a perceived heavyweight.
The other five teams on the list were the Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, Lions and Rams.
Before anyone writes off the Commanders only because of the NFC championship result, remember that just weeks earlier, the Commanders, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, took down the Eagles in Week 16. Daniels passed for a career-high five touchdowns in Washington's win over Philly's No. 1-ranked defense. That was one of the Eagles' only three losses.
Anytime you have a franchise quarterback, you can beat anyone. Finally, the Commanders have one in Daniels. Also, Washington should have a better roster in 2025.

Trade Idea Moves Dolphins' Tyreek Hill to Patriots

Trade Idea Moves Dolphins' Tyreek Hill to Patriots originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots are in the midst of a dramatic overhaul within their wide receiver room as they look to provide Drake Maye with more offensive weapons ahead of his sophomore campaign. Advertisement The Patriots made one of the biggest splashes of the offseason by signing All-Pro wideout and then-free agent Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $63.5 million contract. Two weeks prior to acquiring Diggs, they added another veteran presence to the team in the form of Mack Hollins. David Carr, an analyst at believes the Patriots should not stop there. He thinks the team is due for another newcomer to join the position group: Tyreek Hill, a player who will bring unprecedented speed in the slot – and almost certainly will grab headlines in the Boston area. "The Dolphins might be wary of trading within the division, but if not, the Patriots and Drake Maye certainly could use Hill's services in the passing attack," Carr wrote. "New England has admirably overhauled the offense this offseason, and Hill would continue that trend by giving Josh McDaniels a guy who can elevate his attack to the next level due to his speed and field-stretching ability." Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (10) on the field before the game against the New York Jets at MetLife Carchietta-Imagn Images Carr specifically sees Hill as a potential trade candidate given the volatile relationship that has developed between Hill and the Miami Dolphins organization in the past year. Advertisement "It actually started when he voiced his frustrations at the end of a disappointing 2024 campaign in Miami, both for the Fins (who finished below .500 for the first time since 2019) and Hill (who missed the Pro Bowl for the first time in his nine-year career). The star receiver publicly expressed a desire to play elsewhere, an idea the Dolphins nixed and Hill himself quickly backtracked on," Carr wrote. "However, I'm not convinced Miami will keep him, considering his off-field issues and the fact that the franchise can save nearly $15 million by moving him, per Over the Cap." Hill has already garnered a long list of achievements – five All-Pro First Team honors, eight Pro Bowl nods, six 1,000-yard seasons, and one Super Bowl championship – that place him amongst the best wide receivers of the 21st century. In nine total NFL seasons, he has 798 receptions, 11,098 receiving yards, and 82 receiving touchdowns to his name, all numbers that are expected to increase before Hill decides to hang up his cleats. Projecting Terry McLaurin's contract as Commanders WR holds out

Projecting Terry McLaurin's contract as Commanders WR holds out Show Caption Hide Caption Former Washington QB is excited to see the Commanders back in D.C. Former Washington quarterback Alex Smith discusses the Commanders' decision to move back to RFK Stadium. Sports Seriously Can the Washington Commanders reach terms on a new deal with "frustrated" wide receiver Terry McLaurin? And if they can, what would that deal look like? NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Thursday that McLaurin is "frustrated with the lack of progress on a long-term deal." The six-year NFL veteran went so far as to stop attending the team's workouts at OTAs earlier this week after he was initially present. McLaurin is entering the final year of the three-year, $68.4 million contract he signed in 2022 and coming off of his fifth straight 1,000-yard season with the team. Schultz reported that "talks have been minimal" between McLaurin and the Commanders, and the receiver is making his feelings clear by refusing to show up to voluntary workouts. McLaurin is at risk of fines if he also fails to show up for Washington's mandatory, three-day veteran minicamp, which begins next Wednesday. WASHINGTON COMMANDERS: 2024 NFC runners-up announce plans to build new stadium in DC Terry McLaurin contract projection Length: 3 years 3 years Value: $93 million ($31 million AAV) McLaurin will turn 30 years old right around the start of the 2025 season and is coming off of a fifth 1,000-yard season in a row, enough to earn a second career Pro Bowl nod as well as his first second-team All-Pro honors. Throughout the ups and downs that Washington has dealt with at the quarterback position, McLaurin has been a consistent producer at his position. His 1,000-yard season streak is especially impressive with the added context that his team ran out 11 different starting quarterbacks in the six seasons he's been in Washington. (They are: Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, Alex Smith, Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Garrett Gilbert, Carson Wentz, Sam Howell and Jayden Daniels.) McLaurin's consistency amid all of the chaos around him is something the team is likely to reward him for eventually. His current deal pays him an average of $22.8 million per year, which ranks 16th among all NFL receivers, behind guys like the Indianapolis Colts' Michael Pittman and Tennessee Titans' Calvin Ridley. A short-term deal that pays the Commanders receiver just around $30 million per year to move him into the top-10 highest-paid receivers would be a nice deal for both sides. It's job security and a pay raise for McLaurin, and a chance for the team to lock in Daniels' top receiver for three more years before the quarterback is due to receive a big payday. And since newcomer wideout Deebo Samuel is also set to hit free agency after 2025, a solid-value deal for McLaurin wouldn't hamstring the team from making a big move next offseason, if they so choose. Terry McLaurin stats Through six years in the NFL, McLaurin has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his last five seasons. Here's how his career and 2024 stats look:
