Rams lifting contest: Aaron Donald vs. Jared Verse?
Rams edge rusher Jared Verse appeared to lay down a workout challenge for retired Aaron Donald, a future Hall of Famer, during an appearance on the "Adam Schefter Podcast" on Wednesday. (Kyusung Gong / Associated Press) During his rookie season, Rams edge rusher Jared Verse established himself as one of the NFL's most boisterous players — and also a force to be reckoned with ala former Rams star Aaron Donald. So it should be no surprise that Verse, the NFL defensive rookie of the year, unabashedly if not kiddingly sounded Wednesday as if he was challenging Donald, a future Hall of Famer and legendary training maven, to a workout duel. Advertisement During an appearance on the 'Adam Schefter Podcast,' Verse was asked if he could work out with Donald during the offseason. 'No, he don't want that,' Verse said. 'He's not ready for that.' Verse did not stop. 'That little 500 bench he had. He's not ready for that,' Verse said. 'Hey, I'll be moving weight. I'll be moving weight.' Adam Schefter: 2 key 49ers free agents won't re-sign
Adam Schefter: 2 key 49ers free agents won't re-sign Keeping and signing free agents isn't going to be easy this offseason for the San Francisco 49ers. In fact, two of their key free agents already have one foot out the door according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. In an episode of the Adam Schefter Podcast, Schefter said neither Talanoa Hufanga nor Dre Greenlaw will return for the 49ers in 2025. "They're going to lose talent in free agency," Schefter said. "Talanoa Hufanga is going to be gone. Dre Greenlaw, I think, is going to be gone. They're going to lose a lot of talent in free agency. They're going to have to make cuts here to get under the salary cap in the coming week." It's important to note the 49ers aren't going to have to make cuts to get under the salary cap in the coming week. They're working with north of $33 million in cap space according to Over the Cap. Even if they get Brock Purdy's contract extension done, that deal isn't likely to carry a sizable cap hit right away. There's a chance they lose players like Hufanga, Greenlaw and Charvarius Ward. However, general manager John Lynch at the NFL combine told reporters the 49ers are already in talks with Hufanga and Greenlaw's representatives to bring both players back. "Those guys are fantastic players," Lynch said. "Of course we have interest in bringing them back and we'll work our tails off to try to make that happen, whether it does, can't tell you that. But I think in the near future here, things are kicking off. So yeah, we've been in contact with them and their representatives and we'll continue to be.' If both players earn sizable deals at or near the top of the market at their positions, it may not behoove the 49ers to bring them back. However, their respective injury histories put question marks over their markets and open the door for one or both to return. The 49ers have some long-term salary cap hurdles they'll have to plan around this offseason, but their situation isn't as dire as Schefter makes it seem. Unless Hufanga and/or Greenlaw have decided they won't come back no matter what, there's a chance the 49ers are able to retain them.
