James Gunn Refused To Add One Marvel Character To 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 3'

James Gunn, the current co-head of DC Studios, got his superhero start in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after directing the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. It took quite some time for the third film to get off the ground, however, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was finally released in 2023. During the film's production, however, James Gunn revealed that there was one Marvel character he refused to add to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 . Gunn explained that the character, who was a popular part of various other MCU movies and had ties to the titular Guardians, was one that he did not want to include in the third film. The reason Marvel Studios wanted the character included, however, was because of an arc featured in Avengers: Endgame . Here's what Gunn shared while speaking with Entertainment Weekly: 'I said in the script notes: 'I'm not gonna put him in. I don't want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don't want to do a movie with Thor.' I don't understand the character that much. I love watching his movies and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don't understand how to write that character.' Gunn shared his regret regarding another character that he tried to tease during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , and how this didn't exactly work out when doing the third movie: 'I did not like what I did in Guardians 2 where we set up Adam Warlock and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy and we set up all this shit that I didn't necessarily plan on. Well, I guess I kind of planned on fulfilling that promise, but you want to be careful about that. The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, 'Oh my God! Look at this.' At times when you're using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you're screwing yourself over. It was not easy to work Adam Warlock into Guardians 3 .' Fortunately, Thor: Love and Thunder seems to have allowed Gunn the freedom to do Guardians 3 without including Thor, thus allowing him to make the movie he wanted to do. While there were some other regrets along the way, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was still a hit with fans, and now Gunn is hard at work with building the DC Universe at Warner Bros. Discovery. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the MCU and the future works of James Gunn as we have them. While he's no longer involved with the Guardians series, it'll be exciting to see what he has to offer with such projects as Superman and other related titles.

James Gunn Reveals How Past MCU Mistakes Shaped SUPERMAN's Post-Credits Scene — GeekTyrant

James Gunn knows a thing or two about post-credits scenes. He gave us some of the most memorable ones in the MCU, and also learned a few hard lessons along the way. Now, as he gears up to launch Superman , the first theatrical entry in the new DC Universe, he's being a little more cautious with how he handles those stingers. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn confirmed that Superman will have a post-credits scene, but don't expect it to swing the door wide open for ten upcoming DCU projects. Instead, Gunn says he's drawing directly from past experiences at Marvel, specifically, where he feels he overreached. 'I have a philosophy about post-credit scenes. It's somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel. I did not like what I did in Guardians 2 where we set up Adam Warlock and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy and we set up all this s— that I didn't necessarily plan on. 'Well, I guess I kind of planned on fulfilling that [Adam Warlock] promise, but you want to be careful about that. The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, 'Oh my God! Look at this.' 'At times when you're using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you're screwing yourself over. It was not easy to work Adam Warlock into Guardians 3.' If you tease something, you're eventually expected to follow through, and sometimes, plans change. So unless it really works, Gunn isn't interested in using the end credits as a dumping ground for setups that might never pay off. It's a philosophy that clearly informed how he approached The Suicide Squad and its spinoff series Peacemaker . 'I started shooting the Peacemaker show and then I shot [the post-credits scene] and then put it in there, so it was easy.' As for Superman , Gunn has already told fans to stick around through the credits. The film clocks in at 2 hours and 9 minutes, including the stinger, making it the shortest Superman movie since 1987's Superman IV: The Quest for Peace , but if you're expecting a major reveal or a deep tease of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow , it might be time to adjust expectations. With Lanterns in production and Supergirl hitting theaters next year, it's tempting to think Superman 's post-credits scene could be planting seeds. And maybe it is, but Gunn's caution suggests a tighter, more contained approach. DC Studios is still laying the foundation for its universe, and it sounds like Gunn would rather keep the post-credits scene in service of this movie rather than gamble on what's down the road.

James Gunn confirms post credit scene in Superman BUT won't repeat the same mistakes he did with Marvel

American filmmaker James Gunn is setting expectations straight when it comes to what fans should anticipate after the credits roll on the upcoming film Superman. While the film will include a post-credits scene, James made it clear that it won't follow the typical Marvel formula of teasing what's next. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 58-year-old director explained that his approach to end-credit tags has been shaped by his past experience in the superhero genre — especially during his time with Marvel. 'I have a philosophy about post-credit scenes. It's somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel," he said. A post shared by James Gunn (@jamesgunn) He reflected on one of those missteps: the moment in Avengers: Endgame when Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. 'I said in the script notes: 'I'm not gonna put him in. I don't want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don't want to do a movie with Thor. I don't understand the character that much. I love watching his movies and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don't understand how to write that character,'" James shared. Another example he cited was the introduction of Adam Warlock, who first appeared in a post-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and later became part of the third film. 'I did not like what I did in Guardians 2 where we set up Adam Warlock and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy and we set up all this s**t that I didn't necessarily plan on,' James admitted. 'Well, I guess I kind of planned on fulfilling that [Adam Warlock] promise, but you want to be careful about that. The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, 'Oh my God! Look at this.' At times when you're using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you're screwing yourself over. It was not easy to work Adam Warlock into Guardians 3. I loved working with Will, and I liked dealing with the character, but at the end of the day, was he kind of fitting a weird square peg into a round hole? A little bit, yeah," he added. Instead, James said he prefers moments that feel rewarding without pressuring future stories into a specific direction — like the humorous appearance of Howard the Duck in the first Guardians film. He emphasized that he avoids forward-looking tags 'unless it really, really works.' He pointed to the post-credits scene in The Suicide Squad, which set up Peacemaker, as an example of when it did work well. 'I started shooting the Peacemaker show and then I shot [the post-credits scene] and then put it in there, so it was easy,' James explained. 'I knew it was coming, so that was fine, but I got to be a little bit careful about it. I do love giving something back to the audience, so I will try to put something in the end credits for audiences to see, because I think it's great. I love my crew, and I want you to stick around and see who the gaffers were," he added. Starring David Corenswet as the titular hero Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the upcoming movie is slated to release on July 11.

Marvel Rivals announces Adam Warlock and Scarlet Witch skins This is the new Adam Warlock skin in Marvel Rivals. | Image via NetEase Games. NetEase Games has recently announced via Twitter that new skins of Adam Warlock and Scarlet Witch will be dropping soon in the game. The exciting aspect of both the skins is that these two new skins are not typical ones, which we have generally seen for these two superheroes. The upcoming skin of Adam Warlock is called Immortal Avatar, which features a dark long cape and coat around Warlock. Also, there are two dragons over the character's shoulders which gives him a more aggressive vibe. Warlock's previous skins are more inclined towards golden touch, so this new skin is definitely a breather of fresh air for the fans. Same goes for Scarlet Witch as well. Her upcoming skin named Immortal Avatar steers away from his usual all-reddish skins, with a touch of golden wave in her dress. Her hair in this skin is also golden, which we haven't seen in any of her previous cosmetics. She also wields a red and golden waist girdle with a red crystal in the center of that. This new skin gives this character a more noir mystic look. NetEase Games have stated that both these skins will be available in the game's shop from May 22 at 7 PM PDT. However, the development company is yet to reveal the prices of the respective skins. Interested players can head on to the Store tab in the game on the previously mentioned date and look in the Featured section for these two skins, and from there they can buy those.
