GPS rep proposes special PR pass for long-term non-Sarawakians
GPS assemblyman Adam Yii said it is a shame that many who raised their families in the state and proudly call Sarawak their home have to leave due to immigration policies. (Facebook pic) KUCHING : A government backbencher has proposed for the introduction of a special permanent resident (PR) pass for long-term non-Sarawakian residents who have made Sarawak their home. Adam Yii (GPS-Pujut) said there were many individuals who have contributed significantly to the state's economy and society through employment, property ownership and family ties who faced the prospect of forced departure upon retirement due to current immigration policies. 'Many have raised families here, served in our public and private sectors, and now proudly call Sarawak their home. Yet, they are not allowed to remain in Sarawak after retirement, even with Sarawakian spouses or children,' he said. Participating in the debate for the motion of thanks for the address by Sarawak governor Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at the state legislative assembly sitting today, Yii said the current policy had created unnecessary hardship and disrupted family life. 'It is truly a loss for Sarawak, both economically and as a brain drain, since the family members will follow their uprooted parents. 'Therefore, I appeal to our state administration to consider introducing a special permanent resident pass for those who wish to settle down in Sarawak for good,' he added.

GPS rep urges special PR pass for long-term non-Sarawakians facing deportation after retirement
KUCHING, May 23 — A government backbencher has proposed for the introduction of a special permanent resident (PR) pass for long-term non-Sarawakian residents who have made Sarawak their home. GPS rep calls for special PR passes for long-term non-Sarawakian residents
KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak's (GPS) Pujut state assemblyman Adam Yii today urged the state government to consider introducing special Permanent Resident (PR) passes for non-Sarawakian Malaysians and foreigners who wish to settle permanently in Sarawak. He said many of them have lived, worked, and contributed meaningfully to the state's economy and development for years. "Some have served in our public and private sectors for decades and have raised families in the state, purchased homes, contributed to our economy and community, and in many cases, they now proudly call Sarawak their home," Yii said during the debate in support of the motion of appreciation to the Governor's address at the opening of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting. He said introducing special PR passes for non-Sarawakian Malaysians and foreigners would be a compassionate and practical step to honour their contributions and allow them to continue calling Sarawak their home in retirement. "However, under our current immigration policy, many of them are not allowed to remain in Sarawak after retirement, even when they have Sarawakian spouses, children, or property. "This creates unnecessary hardship and disrupts family life. It is truly a loss for Sarawak, both economically and in terms of brain drain, as the family members will follow their uprooted parents," he said. Yii also called for an amendment to the Sarawak Electricity Ordinance to avoid disputes over unpaid electricity bills. He said that under the present ordinance, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) may deny electricity supply to a new tenant or property owner simply because the previous occupant left behind unpaid bills. This, he said, has caused hardship to many landlords and new tenants who have no connection to the defaulter, adding that it is unfair for someone to be held responsible for another person's debt. He proposed that the state government amend the ordinance so that, if a new applicant can show proof, such as a tenancy agreement or statutory declaration, that they are not related to the defaulter, SEB should allow electricity supply to proceed. Yii also proposed that SEB offer prepaid electricity meters as an option, especially for rental properties, saying that under such systems, tenants must top up before using electricity, which would prevent unpaid bills from piling up. He said such systems would help avoid disputes between landlords, tenants, and SEB. "Most importantly, prepaid meters are harder to tamper with, thus helping reduce electricity theft and losses to SEB," he added.

SUPP urges stern action against online hate speech, defamation
Adam Yii – Photo by Chimon Upon MIRI (May 13): Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) has called for stern action to be taken against those responsible for spreading hate speech and defamation on social media platforms. In a statement today, SUPP Central Publicity and Information Secretary cum Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii expressed full support for legal action against such behavior, urging the public to take the dangers of online speech seriously. 'Cyberspace is not above the law. Every online post must carry legal and moral accountability. While expressing opinions, the public must return to reason and facts, rather than letting emotions override the truth. No one should become a tool for online violence,' he said. Yii was referring to a recent Facebook post a user, which allegedly insulted the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and his family, drawing widespread public attention. He said the party fully supports the police reports lodged simultaneously in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri by the Premier's political secretaries, describing it as a strong indication of the government's zero-tolerance policy against malicious online attacks. 'The post not only contained insulting language but also personal attacks against the Premier's family. This clearly crossed the boundaries of free speech and constituted defamation with potentially seditious undertones,' Yii said. 'This kind of behavior undermines the social harmony and multicultural coexistence that Sarawak is known for. Left unchecked, it may deepen political and racial divisions and even disrupt public order,' Yii warned. He also expressed concern for young people, who form the majority of social media users. Yii cautioned that frequent exposure to emotional, vulgar, or false content may distort their worldview. 'They may start to believe that vulgarity equals bravery and spreading lies equals freedom. In the long run, this damages civic values and weakens the foundation of our nation,' he said. Abang Johari Tun Openg adam yii cyberbullying hate speech insult
