Over 800 join Miri's 20th Anniversary Car-Free Day 2025

MIRI (May 3) : More than 800 individuals came together to take part in the Miri 20th Anniversary Car-Free Day 2025 this morning, making the event a resounding success.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii, who officiated the event at Miri City Hall, expressed gratitude for the strong turnout from members of the public, government agencies, NGOs, schools, and educational institutions.
'Today, we witnessed an overwhelming turnout. This event is not just a milestone in Miri's history, but also reflects our ongoing commitment to Sarawak's long-term development goals, particularly in environmental sustainability, health, and community cohesion,' said Yii.
This year's edition featured a new 4.4-kilometre route that began at City Hall and continued through Jalan Bandaraya to Jalan Marina Utama.
The expanded, scenic route was designed to encourage more engagement and underscore the importance of reducing carbon emissions.
Yii highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS), contributing to Sarawak's transition to a low-carbon economy and improved quality of life for residents.
In his address, he also expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak as well as the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia for providing funding as well as endorsing and facilitating the initiative under the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) 2025.
'Your guidance and support have been integral in helping us design programmes that are aligned with both local and national sustainability goals,' said Yii.
He added that the programme not only encourage physical fitness but also create an environment where everyone can come together as a community to support the shared vision of Sarawak – 'Building a Sustainable, Inclusive, and High-Income Society'.
'Together, we are moving closer to realising Sarawak's ambitious goals under PCDS, ensuring a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future for all of us,' he pointed out.
Meanwhile, among activities held during the Miri 20th Anniversary Car-Free Day 2025 were a Fun Run, Zumba workout, walking, bicycle riding, sports demonstrations and community games.

THE operator of a Luyang night market, off Jalan Wisma Pertanian, risks being compounded as much as RM500, if he/she fails to comply with City Hall's requirements regarding the noise and garbage generated by the activities on the grounds. A spokesman for the agency's Licencing Department said such action could be taken under City Hall's Hawkers By-laws 1966. Advertisement He said the operator was given an official warning to this affect recently. 'The individual was asked to make sure that loud music was not played on the grounds,' he said. 'This includes hosting buskers or live bands.' He said the onus was on the operator to ensure that the night market grounds was kept clean before and after the stalls opened for the day. 'The hawkers are only permitted to run their stalls from 5pm to 12am.' The operator was instructed to provide garbage disposal facilities for the vendors to get rid of their waste, according to him. He said he/she was asked to provide bins for the hawkers and to ensure that they did not throw their food waste into any of the drains nearby. 'In the worst case scenario, the individual can have his/ her licence revoked if we find that our conditions have been contravened.' This follows feedback about the nuisance created by loud music coming from the night market. The Luyang homeowner, who spoke out about this inconvenience, said the noise could be heard from as early as 6.10pm in one instance and 6.30pm on another. She alerted to City Hall about these incidents, providing the agency with recordings of the nuisance in both cases. The resident even put down her displeasure in writing to the authority. The spokesman said the night market was inspected on two separate occasions over a span of two weeks. The first check was carried out on the same day that the authority received the resident's letter, while the most recent one was made shortly after it was contacted by Hotline. He said Licencing staff went to the grounds around 5.30pm during the former inspection and around 7pm during the latter. 'They spent between one and a half to two hours there in each case,' he said. 'No buskers or bands were found to be performing during either inspection. On top of this, no loud music could be heard on the grounds.' 'Our personnel met with each of the hawkers who were present and personally briefed them on City Hall's requirements.' A representative for the night market operator participated in both checks, according to him. 'He/she was verbally asked to ensure that his/her hawkers abided by our conditions during the initial visit. A 'Notis Amaran (warning notice)' was served to the individual during the next one.' The spokesman said Licencing staff would be keeping an eye on the night market from time to time. Umno told to look in mirror before accusing others of betrayal
Nizam KOTA KINABALU (June 4): If one wishes to speak of dignity and betrayal, Umno should first take a hard look at its own history, said Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. The Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister said that he read with interest the statement by the Umno Kota Kinabalu Division chief and Umno Women's Exco member, Musliati Moslimin, who claimed that Umno is not a 'political tool,' not a 'script filler,' and not a 'buyer of false promises.' 'Ironically, this statement comes from a party with a long history of scripting flawed political narratives, including in Sabah,' said Nizam, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) information chief. 'The reality is, during the 2020 Sabah state election (PRN), history clearly records who broke agreements and moral principles. Just two days before nomination day, Umno and Barisan Nasional had agreed to contest 27 seats. Yet, when the time came, they contested 41 seats — a move that not only violated mutual understanding but also created confusion and early fractures within the coalition,' he reminded. Nizam also said that Umno also still refuses to accept the fact that in a coalition of political parties, the party with the highest number of seats holds the priority to lead. 'The GRS coalition, which Musliati dismisses as 'splinter parties,' won the highest number of seats and thus rightfully held the prerogative to choose the Chief Minister of Sabah. This is not betrayal — it is the foundation of true democracy.' More surprising is that Musliati makes no mention of the 'Langkah Kinabalu' incident in January 2023, in which several Umno leaders, including Datuk Bung Moktar Radin, were involved in an attempt to topple the existing government, he said. He added that the actions of Bung Moktar and several Umno leaders not only threatened state stability but gambled with the people's mandate. 'Their removal from the Cabinet and positions in government agencies was the Chief Minister's prerogative, made in the interest of safeguarding the state's stability.' He said that Umno Sabah must also come to terms with the fact that they are no longer the 'big brother' of politics. 'Nationally, they continue to lose public support, and in Sabah, the people are tired of the same old script — just with different actors, but the same plot,' said Nizam. He also said that the GRS government today chooses to look forward, forging strategic cooperation with Pakatan Harapan to ensure post-GE15 stability and prepare for the upcoming Sabah state election. 'Ultimately, real power lies not in the hands of any individual, party, or propaganda — but in the hands of the people. Let the people of Sabah decide who is truly working for them, and who merely excels at political theatre.' Musliati has described the experience of working with GRS as a betrayal of the trust and sacrifices made by Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) since the 2020 Sabah state election. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Musliati stressed that the state government formed after the 2020 polls was not the result of any one party's strength, but rather a coalition comprising several components, including Bersatu, PBS, STAR, and most importantly, Umno-BN. She asserted that Umno had not only contributed the highest number of seats to GRS at the time, but also provided vital election machinery, resources and grassroots support which formed the backbone of the coalition. 'Bersatu, at that time, was still in its infancy and relied heavily on the groundwork that Umno had established over the years. Yet silently, the hand extended in friendship was met with poison,' she said. Musliati also revealed that Umno had been sabotaged by independent candidates allegedly sponsored by certain quarters within GRS. Despite this, Umno still managed to secure 14 seats, more than Bersatu's 11. She went on to describe Umno's decision to give way to Datuk Seri Pangllima Hajiji Noor to become Chief Minister as a sacrifice made in the interest of state stability, even though Umno had a stronger claim to the post based on the number of seats won.
