Fazzrudin: Students must take lead in shaping Sarawak's future

MIRI (Aug 3): Students must step up and take centre stage in shaping Sarawak's future, said Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman during a major education briefing held at Curtin University Malaysia here on Friday. Delivering the keynote speech at the Sarawak Government Education Initiative Briefing, Fazzrudin, who is also the Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, stressed that students are not merely beneficiaries of government support, but key players in the state's long-term transformation. 'Failing to plan is planning to fail. Just as the government has a long-term strategy for Sarawak through PCDS 2030, you too must have a strategy for your life – your studies, your career, your contribution. You are the future of this state,' said Fazzrudin. He explained that the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which serves as a blueprint for economic growth, environmental protection and social inclusion, was created with the younger generation in mind. 'PCDS 2030 was created for you, the young leaders, so that you can reach greater heights in the future,' said Fazzruddin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman. He highlighted Sarawak's plans to attract investors, build new industrial sectors, and lead in green and hydrogen-based economies would only succeed if the state had the local talent to fill the jobs being created. 'We need you to step up. If we can achieve this, Sarawak's future for the next 50 to 100 years will be secure,' he stressed. He likened the government's role to that of a hardworking parent striving to secure a better future for their children and called for the students to honour these sacrifices by excelling in their studies and contributing meaningfully to their communities and state. The briefing formed part of a statewide outreach initiative, bringing together senior political secretaries, state agencies and over 400 students ranging from foundation to diploma level. Curtin University Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Prof Vincent Lee welcomed the delegation and expressed pride in supporting the government's transformative goals. 'As a Sarawak Government-owned university, Curtin Malaysia is proud to support these transformative goals. 'We believe in the power of education, research and community engagement to help build a smarter, more inclusive Sarawak,' said Lee. The event also featured presentations from key agencies, including the Economic Planning Unit, the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Yayasan Sarawak, Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE), Housing Development Corporation, and Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS). Students were introduced to various support initiatives and schemes, including Bantuan Khas Kerajaan (BKK); financial assistance through Yayasan Sarawak; Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme for student tenants; and upskilling and graduate training under GETS and GAPS programmes. Fazzrudin concluded by stressing the importance of awareness and encouraged students to make full use of available opportunities. 'I hope all of you will take something from today and use it to drive the future of our state,' he said. education fazzrudin abdul rahman leaders students

He said social inclusion is a core component of Sarawak's Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to ensure economic benefits reach all levels of society, particularly the B40 group and rural communities. 'The 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' programme today aligns with the objectives of PCDS 2030. 'Organised in partnership between Petronas and the Welfare Department (JKM) Serian Division, the programme reached out to 150 recipients through the distribution of essential food baskets in the Serian district. 'These contributions not only alleviated the burden during the festive season but also brought joy to families celebrating Gawai Dayak,' he said when officiating the programme at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. Each food basket contained cooking oil, glutinous rice, canned goods, condiments, and locally-produced coffee. Petronas Sarawak general manager Norazibah Md Rabu handed over the festive contributions to Serian Division Social Welfare officer Robert Jullong Bengat during the programme. In her speech, Norazibah said the initiative reaffirms Yayasan Petronas' commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. She said the programme was part of Petronas' Community Well-being and Development initiative, aimed at spreading festive joy. 'We believe that everyone deserves happiness, especially when celebrating meaningful occasions such as Gawai,' she said. A total of 750 families across Sarawak have been selected to receive the contributions this Gawai, including 400 households in Miri and Bintulu, she noted. SIBU (July 4): For over two decades, the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) has fostered cultural pride, boosted the creative economy, promoted tourism, and established Sibu as a center of culture and harmony, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts praised BCF as a festival that transcends generations, allowing elders to pass down customs and providing youth with a platform to explore and celebrate their identity. 'To reach the 21st milestone is no small feat. This longevity is a reflection of the vision, dedication, and teamwork of countless individuals – from the organisers, exhibitors, artists and cultural advocates to the local community that has supported the festival year after year. 'I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Sibu Municipal Council and the dedicated team for continuing to raise the bar each year,' he said during the 21st BCF opening here tonight. Abdul Karim's text-of-speech was read by State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan. Abdul Karim also noted that under Sarawak's Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, sustainable growth must include social inclusivity and cultural preservation. 'The Borneo Cultural Festival plays a vital role in this effort, not only as a tourism driver, but as a platform for community empowerment, creative entrepreneurship, and cultural diplomacy. 'Let us continue to support initiatives that protect our heritage, connect communities, and inspire the next generation of Sarawakians,' he said. Meanwhile, BCF organising chairman and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said the festival has long served as a unique platform where Sarawak's diverse communities, including Iban, Bidayuh, Malay, Melanau, Chinese, and others, along with guests from Sabah and Kalimantan, can proudly showcase their identity. 'This is the true value of the festival – a gathering that educates, unites, and brings joy to our community's lives,' he said. Izkandar added that in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this year's BCF also promotes waste reduction and recycling, with clearly labeled bins for general and recyclable waste. 'Visitors are encouraged to dispose of waste responsibly using clearly labeled bins for general and recyclable waste,' he said. He explained that this year, the main arch and entrance have been designed to be more than just decorative. 'They serve as a symbol of unity – three mini villages standing together, reminding us that although we come from different origins, we share one big home in Sarawak. 'I truly appreciate the efforts of everyone who has worked hard to decorate these mini villages,' said Izkandar. Also present during hte opening were State Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; State Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts acting permanent secretary, Desmond Douglas Jerukan; SMC chairman Clarence Ting; Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong; political secretary to Premier Joshua Ting; Temenggong Stanley Gramong; and Pemanca Paing Tawi.
