BCF celebrates 21st year as symbol of unity, culture and community pride in Sibu
SIBU (July 4): For over two decades, the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) has fostered cultural pride, boosted the creative economy, promoted tourism, and established Sibu as a center of culture and harmony, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts praised BCF as a festival that transcends generations, allowing elders to pass down customs and providing youth with a platform to explore and celebrate their identity.
'To reach the 21st milestone is no small feat. This longevity is a reflection of the vision, dedication, and teamwork of countless individuals – from the organisers, exhibitors, artists and cultural advocates to the local community that has supported the festival year after year.
'I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Sibu Municipal Council and the dedicated team for continuing to raise the bar each year,' he said during the 21st BCF opening here tonight.
Abdul Karim's text-of-speech was read by State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
Abdul Karim also noted that under Sarawak's Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, sustainable growth must include social inclusivity and cultural preservation.
'The Borneo Cultural Festival plays a vital role in this effort, not only as a tourism driver, but as a platform for community empowerment, creative entrepreneurship, and cultural diplomacy.
'Let us continue to support initiatives that protect our heritage, connect communities, and inspire the next generation of Sarawakians,' he said.
Meanwhile, BCF organising chairman and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said the festival has long served as a unique platform where Sarawak's diverse communities, including Iban, Bidayuh, Malay, Melanau, Chinese, and others, along with guests from Sabah and Kalimantan, can proudly showcase their identity.
'This is the true value of the festival – a gathering that educates, unites, and brings joy to our community's lives,' he said.
Izkandar added that in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this year's BCF also promotes waste reduction and recycling, with clearly labeled bins for general and recyclable waste.
'Visitors are encouraged to dispose of waste responsibly using clearly labeled bins for general and recyclable waste,' he said.
He explained that this year, the main arch and entrance have been designed to be more than just decorative.
'They serve as a symbol of unity – three mini villages standing together, reminding us that although we come from different origins, we share one big home in Sarawak.
'I truly appreciate the efforts of everyone who has worked hard to decorate these mini villages,' said Izkandar.
Also present during hte opening were State Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; State Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts acting permanent secretary, Desmond Douglas Jerukan; SMC chairman Clarence Ting; Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong; political secretary to Premier Joshua Ting; Temenggong Stanley Gramong; and Pemanca Paing Tawi.

He stressed that it is the community elders' responsibility to safeguard and pass down their customs and traditions to future generations. 'Make sure that everything you do related to your customs, your tribe, and your history is preserved, and that these are shared with the younger generation. 'Sometimes the younger generation is too occupied with technology, mobile phones and the like, to the point they forget the diversity of ethnic groups we have,' he said. He was speaking during the Ngarom Bisamah 2025 dinner at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) multi-purpose hall here last night, organised by Persatuan Segu Bunuk Penrissen (PSBP). In line with this, he encouraged PSBP to apply for funding from his ministry to organise workshops, classes or programmes that promote the preservation of Bidayuh heritage and culture. 'Our ministry has several funds that you can apply for under my creative industry portfolio. 'If the association wishes to organise workshops or classes on traditional dances, handicrafts and the like, you can apply through the facilitation fund,' he said. Additionally, he encouraged the association to apply for event grants for any festival or celebration they wish to hold, adding that if the event is sustainable and held annually, it could be proposed for inclusion in the Sarawak tourism calendar. 'Once it is listed in the tourism calendar, it will automatically receive an annual allocation,' he said. In a show of support, he also pledged RM20,000 for the association's activities. Held in conjunction with PSBP's seventh anniversary, the event also saw three prominent individuals receiving the 'Bisegu Icon Award'. The recipients were Sarawak Skills senior manager (strategic engagement and consultancy) John Rizal Biki; Joeyees Trading Sdn Bhd founder Awaeang Kwasin; and local singer Roziena Ixzy Halix (Roxy Ixzy), who was also the 2024 Bintang RTM champion. Among those present were Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin and DBNA president Datu Ik Pahon Joyik.

KUCHING (Aug 10): 'Serumpun Sarawak' has made its international debut with a four-day cultural and gastronomic showcase at Seaside Studio CASO in Osaka. This marks the first overseas chapter of the Serumpun Sarawak movement, a cultural gastronomy initiative that blends ancestral wisdom with modern storytelling and sensory innovation. Hosted by the state Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the event drew dignitaries and guests from both Malaysia and Japan, celebrating Sarawak's rich indigenous heritage on a global stage. Among those present at the event on Friday were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and State Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Also in attendance were State Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar and other notable dignitaries. 'Serumpun Sarawak represents more than a cultural showcase – it is an affirmation of who we are as Sarawakians,' said Abdul Karim in a statement issued by STB. 'By bringing our stories, our flavours, and our indigenous wisdom to Japan, we are building bridges of understanding and appreciation that go beyond tourism. 'This is how we share Sarawak with the world: through genuine connections that celebrate diversity while deepening respect for our shared humanity.' At the heart of the programme was a seven-course degustation dinner curated by Chef James Won. Each course was inspired by the flavours, philosophies, and food knowledge of Sarawak's 34 diverse indigenous communities. Using ingredients foraged from Sarawak's forests and rooted in ancestral fermentation techniques, the culinary showcase was not just a meal; it was a narrative in motion. Courses were presented with evolving soundscapes, visuals, and contextual storytelling, immersing guests in a journey of Sarawak's edible heritage. 'Serumpun Sarawak in Osaka is not just about Sarawakian cuisine, it is about reintroducing our culture to the world through meaningful exchange,' said STB chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor. 'It shows how our rainforest, our heritage, and our people can inspire a global journey that transcends borders. This is Sarawak's soft power at its most authentic.' The experience was further deepened by Prof Gerard Bodeker, who narrated the courses through the lens of traditional medicine, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of rainforest ingredients. A defining moment of the evening was the premiere of 'Ilun Kuai', the official anthem of Serumpun Sarawak. The piece was co-created and performed by Zee Avi, Adrian Jo Milang (The Tuyang Initiative), Raja Farouk, Yuswa Ansari, and the Atlas Collective, with original lyrics by Aren Lirai and Rose Belare. As the 'Sunrise of Sarawak' ritual unfolded, the music anchored guests in a powerful atmosphere of reflection and renewal, calling them to reconnect with the values of rootedness, resilience, and reverence for nature. Through multi-sensory experiences, live performances, and curated conversations, Serumpun Sarawak bridged the traditional and contemporary. The next chapter of Serumpun Sarawak will unfold in Mulu, home to Sarawak's Unesco World Heritage Site. This finale will bring the journey full circle – returning to the forests, rivers, and communities that first inspired the movement.
