Oman finish fifth after close battle with UAE
MUSCAT, JULY 13 The Oman U-16 national basketball team concluded its campaign in the Gulf regional qualifiers for the Asian Championship with a dramatic 65–69 loss to the UAE in their final match, held at the Bahrain Basketball Association Arena in Umm Al Hassam, Manama. Oman approached the game with a defensive mindset, while the UAE team imposed their rhythm early on with fast breaks and inside scoring, ending the first quarter ahead 24–17. In the second quarter, the UAE continued to dominate as Oman struggled with defensive coverage and transition play. The UAE extended their lead, winning the quarter 17–11 and closing the first half with a 41–28 advantage. The third quarter saw a clear improvement in Oman's performance. The team increased its offensive intensity, particularly through Adam al Hinai and Saif al Yahyaei, who helped narrow the gap with swift movement and accurate shooting. Oman won the third quarter 24–15. The fourth quarter was evenly contested. Oman pushed hard to equalise and even led briefly, capitalising on the UAE's physical fatigue. Oman scored 11 points to the UAE's 7, bringing the game to a 63–63 tie at the end of regulation and forcing overtime. In the extra period, Oman rushed several plays, resulting in missed opportunities, while the UAE capitalised on their chances and scored 6 points to Oman's 2, securing a hard-fought 69–65 victory. For Oman, standout player Adam al Hinai scored 25 points, followed by Saif al Yahyaei with 12 points, Sami al Busaidy with 11, and Elias al Obaidani with 6. On the UAE side, Hussein Fadel led the scoring with 23 points, while Hamdan al Shaddadi contributed 11. In the second match of the final day, Saudi Arabia defeated Kuwait 73–50, securing qualification alongside Bahrain. With this result, Oman finished the qualifiers in fifth place. From the Gulf region, Bahrain qualified with a perfect record of 8 points from all wins, while Saudi Arabia came second with 7 points from three wins and one loss. Both teams have now secured their spots in the Asian U-16 Championship, which will take place in Mongolia this August. Oman's 12 player squad for the qualifiers included: Saddam al Shezawi, Khuzaymah al Shibli, Rashid al Isaei, Abdulrahim al Rushdi, Elias al Obaidani, Al Mulhim al Obaidani, Abdulsamad al Subhi, Muhannad al Batashi, Adam al Hinai, Jayyed al Kindi, Saif al Yahyaei, and Sami al Busaidy. Oman fall to Saudi Arabia in Gulf qualifiers
MUSCAT: The Oman national U-16 basketball team suffered another defeat in the Gulf qualifiers for the Asian Championship, losing to their Saudi counterparts with a score of 41–88. The match took place last night at the Bahrain Basketball Association court in Um Al Hassam, Bahrain. Both teams began the match with relative caution, but the Saudi team quickly imposed their fast-paced offensive style, capitalising on several errant passes by the Omani team. Despite efforts from Sidam al Sheezawi and Adam al Hinai to penetrate the defense, defensive errors disrupted the team's rhythm, ending the first quarter with Oman trailing 11–22. The second quarter saw improved offensive performance from Oman, with more varied shooting attempts from outside the paint and a gradual reduction in the score gap. Al Mulhim al Obaidani stood out with his active movements under the basket, while Adam al Hinai maintained composure in shooting. The first half ended 30–40 in favor of Saudi Arabia. Oman will conclude their participation with a match against the UAE, However, Oman entered the second half with a noticeable drop in focus, leading to more intercepted passes and rushed offensive plays. The Saudi players exploited the open spaces with quick counterattacks, significantly widening the score gap. Offensive solutions were absent for Oman, and the quarter ended in a harsh 34–72 deficit. In the final quarter, passing errors and easy turnovers continued from the Omani players, while the Saudi team maintained physical dominance and strong defensive organisation. The Omani coach tried rotating in several substitutes to spark energy, but the Saudi team continued to control the tempo and increase their scoring tally. The game concluded with a heavy 41–88 loss, Oman's heaviest defeat in the qualifiers so far. The team hopes to secure a positive result after a series of defeats On the scoring front, Adam al Hinai led Oman with 13 points, followed by Sidam al Sheezawi and Al Mulhim al Obaidani with 10 points each. For Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman Adel scored 17 points, Hussain al Majid added 14, and Zaidan Ghadeeb contributed 12 points. Oman will conclude their participation in the Gulf qualifiers with a match against the UAE, which will determine the last place in the tournament. Oman fall to Kuwait, face Saudi Arabia today
MUSCAT: The Oman national U-16 basketball team suffered its second consecutive defeat in the Gulf regional qualifiers for the U-16 Asian Championship, this time losing to Kuwait with a score of 55–64. The match was held at the Bahrain Basketball Association Hall in Umm Al Hassam, Manama, as part of the tournament running until July 12. The game witnessed clear shifts in momentum between quarters. In the first quarter, Kuwait took control early, applying pressure defense and capitalising on fast breaks, finishing the period with a dominant 24–10 lead. Oman's defense struggled to cope with Kuwait's aggressive start. Oman player controls the ball In the second quarter, Oman came back with a completely different approach. Tactical changes made by the coach paid off, as the players executed quick transitions and precise passes, coupled with strong offensive and defensive rebounds. Oman managed to outscore Kuwait 20-7, narrowing the gap to just one point at halftime, with the score standing at 30-31. However, the third quarter marked another decline for Oman. Individual errors, lapses in defense, and hurried offensive plays allowed Kuwait to regain control. With this win, Kuwait redeemed itself after a heavy opening loss to Bahrain (52–93), while Oman had also lost its first game to Bahrain with a score of 44–96. The participating teams had a rest day on Thursday. Matches resume today (Friday), with Oman facing Saudi Arabia in a key encounter, while Bahrain plays the UAE. Oman will conclude its campaign on Saturday with a match against the UAE.

Seeb, Nizwa secure wins at Youth Basketball League Finals
MUSCAT: The 2024–2025 Youth Basketball League Finals got off to a thrilling start, with two exciting victories on opening day. The finals, played in a three-round league format, began with two matches hosted at Al Amal Club Hall in Ghala. Seeb Club edged past Al Amerat with a hard fought 59–50 win, while Nizwa Club overcame Salalah with a 62–46 victory. The first match between Seeb and Al Amerat was tightly contested, with both teams trading leads. Al Amerat controlled the early stages, winning the first quarter 9–7, and both teams were evenly matched in the second quarter, each scoring 10 points. This left Al Amerat ahead at halftime, 19–17. In the third quarter, Seeb delivered an impressive performance, scoring 19 points to Al Amerat's 10, flipping the score in their favour to lead 36–29. However, Al Amerat bounced back strongly in the fourth quarter with 17 points to Seeb's 10, tying the game at 46–46 and forcing an overtime period. Seeb, Nizwa secure wins at Youth Basketball League Finals In the decisive fifth period, Seeb dominated by scoring 13 points against only 4 from Al Amerat, securing the win at 59–50. Nizwa Club managed to overturn an early deficit to claim a well earned 62–46 win against Salalah. Nizwa's Adam al Hinai and Mulham al Obaidani each scored 19 points, while Elias al Obaidani contributed 9 points. From the Salalah side, Mishaal Kafkaf stood out with 18 points and Muhab al Balushi added 11. Salalah started strong, taking the first quarter 15–9. But Nizwa responded with a dominant second quarter, scoring 21 points to Salalah's 4, entering halftime with a 30–19 lead. Nizwa continued to build on this momentum in the third and fourth quarters, gradually widening the gap and sealing the victory.
