DC stresses on need for collective effort to protect youth from addiction

Dharwad: Observing Addiction-free Day should serve not merely as a symbolic gesture but as a strong commitment to societal transformation, especially in protecting youth from the dangers of addiction, said deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu. Inaugurating a Addiction-free Day programme organised at DIMHANS here to mark the birth anniversary of Mahant Shivayogi Swami, the DC highlighted the evolving nature of addiction. "Substances like tobacco, alcohol, narcotic and psychotropic drugs are commonly associated with addiction, but today the nature of addiction has changed. Digital addictions like online gaming and gambling are ensnaring youth. These addictions, like termites, gradually erode not just the individual, but also their families and ultimately, society," she stated. She stressed the need to preserve mental, physical and emotional well-being, calling them the most valuable assets of a healthy individual. Karnatak Bal Vikas Academy chairman Sangamesh Babaleshwar said, "When even one member of a family becomes addicted, it disrupts peace, causes financial strain, fuels domestic violence, and leads to broken relationships," he said. Murugha Mutt pontiff Mallikarjun Swami paid tribute to Mahanta Shivayogi Swami, known as the "walking God", who championed the philosophy of Trividha Dasoha. He lauded the seer's contributions for the betterment of society and upliftment of people.
