ATC issues notice to CTD officials over failure to produce case records
The Special Anti-Terrorism Court in Peshawar has issued notices to the Additional Inspector General (AIG) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) for failing to present case records in several terrorism-related cases. The court has ordered both officials to appear in person with the complete records on May 26. Judge Muhammad Iqbal Khan, in his written order, stated that bail applications of three suspects involved in terrorism cases are currently under consideration. Despite repeated orders and notices issued on every hearing, the investigation records have not been submitted to the court. During the most recent hearing, the investigating officer informed the court that the records were still under review and that senior authorities had directed that the documents not be submitted until the review process is complete. The judge noted in his brief ruling that non-compliance with court directives is contributing to the backlog of cases. Legal notices have been issued to both CTD officials under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The court warned that legal action will be taken if the officials fail to comply. The hearing was adjourned until May 26.

Punjab human rights panel orders fresh probe in suspicious death case
The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (Chandigarh), under the leadership of its chairperson Justice Sant Parkash, has directed a fresh inquiry into the suspicious death of Bramhjit Singh Bawa. The commission took suo motu cognizance of a detailed complaint filed by the deceased's father, Maninder Singh Bawa, alleging foul play and cover-up in the police probe. According to the complaint dated June 23, 2024, Bawa claimed that his son was murdered by an acquaintance, Tanwar, after a late-night meeting on June 16, 2024. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 17, when Bramhjit's vehicle was found in a ditch. He was declared dead on the spot. 'Tanwar not only manipulated timelines but also concealed his presence from the scene. The police failed to act upon clear leads including toll CCTV footage and mobile call records,' the complainant alleged. The initial police proceedings, registered under Section 174 of CrPC by ASI of police station in Mullanpur Garibdass, failed to translate into a formal FIR. Evidence including CCTV footage from the Mullanpur–Shimla Toll Plaza was never retrieved, and the ASI included a questionable statement about the victim being intoxicated, without medical corroboration. On April 30, following the commission's direction, the Additional Inspector General (AIG) submitted an inquiry report highlighting critical procedural oversights: 'The victim and accused were seen together at Omex Market around 10:30–11 pm. They left separately at approximately 1 am, reports found no indication of a crash between vehicles… Witness accounts clashed and lacked verification through time stamped videos or forensic data and failure to retrieve CCTV footage and inclusion of unverified claims in official reports'. Justice Sant Parkash termed the lapses 'deeply troubling,' emphasising that 'such procedural failures erode public trust and compromise justice.' A gazetted officer under the supervision of SSP SAS Nagar will re-examine all evidence, including Tanwar's conflicting statements and missing CCTV footage. The ASI has been summoned to appear before the Commission on July 3, 2025, to explain the omissions and justify why departmental action should not be initiated.
