Strictly and Call the Midwife stars to swim with sharks in new ITV show

The new reality show will see celebrities tasked with completing hair-raising challenges in shark infested waters ITV has announced the line up for its brand-new wildlife-meets-entertainment series SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters, and the casting is nearly as exciting as the show's premise. SHARK! is set to air this year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of arguably the most famous shark attack film of all time, Jaws. In the ITV reality series seven well-known figures, including Strictly Come Dancing's Ade Adepitan and Call the Midwife's Helen George, will dive headfirst into shark-infested waters in the Bahamas. Also joining the cast are Sir Lenny Henry, comedians Ross Noble and Lucy Punch, McFly bassist Dougie Poynter, and Countdown co-host Rachel Riley. Each celeb will be tasked with facing their fear of sharks through a series of adrenaline-filled challenges they will have to complete underwater. ‌ ‌ The series has been filmed on the island of Bimini, which is known as the shark capital of the world. Thankfully celebs will get the chance to slowly build up their shark tolerance by starting off with swimming alongside safer species, before progressing to hammerheads, bull sharks, and even the formidable tiger shark. The show is being produced by Plimsoll Productions, who hope to blend entertainment with a strong message about conservation. Alongside their nail-biting adventures, the celebs will also learn about the ecological importance of sharks, which play a critical part in keeping our oceans healthy. A synopsis for the ITV show teased: "The celebrities will confront their greatest fear – sharks. Their first-hand experiences will provide immeasurable excitement and new perspective; they'll come to appreciate sharks' valuable place in our ecosystem, recognising that a world without these creatures is more frightening than one with them." Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment Commissioning at ITV, shared: "We're super excited to be combining the work of Plimsoll – a Blue Chip natural history production company – with the expertise of ITV Entertainment. SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime challenge for some of the bravest celebrities out there." ‌ Karen Plumb, Head of Factual Entertainment at Plimsoll Productions, added: "The team at Plimsoll is uniquely positioned to pioneer this format that blends conservation with wildly entertaining pop culture. "Our fish-out-of-water spin – delivering 50 years after Jaws – will transform the world's perception of these critical predators before it's too late." As well as facing their fears underwater, the cast will be tasked with land-based challenges designed to push their physical and emotional boundaries, all while learning from leading marine experts about the threats sharks face in today's oceans.

‘Let's hope Lenny Henry's leg doesn't get bitten off!' ITV's bizarre celebrity Jaws tribute

Jaws turns 50 this year – a momentous occasion for arguably the most influential movie ever made. After all, we are talking about a piece of entertainment that – for better or worse – we are still living through. This sort of anniversary doesn't come around very often and, now that we are witnessing the slow death of the theatrical experience, it deserves to be commemorated in the most lavish way possible. By this, I mean that ITV should gently lower Ross Noble into shark-infested waters. And I am not the only one who thinks this, since ITV has just announced the lineup of its new 'wildlife crossover format' SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters, in which some famous people will swim with sharks for a bit. Or, to quote the press release, 'a group of ocean-phobic celebrities confront their greatest fear – sharks. Throughout their adrenaline-fuelled, challenge-heavy journey in the Bahamas – the shark capital of the world – these A-listers will push past their limits to come nose to nose with nature's 'villains'.' The lineup in full is Ade Adepitan, Helen George, Sir Lenny Henry, Ross Noble, Dougie Poynter, Lucy Punch and Rachel Riley. Now, if this sounds at all familiar to you, it might be because you're old enough to remember the show ITV made to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Jaws. That show was entitled Celebrity Shark Bait, and it saw Richard E Grant, Amy Nuttall and others being gently lowered into shark-infested waters. And it wasn't very good, to the point that at times it felt like a thorough scientific experiment to make the least interesting shark-based TV programme possible. The jeopardy was minimal. The celebrity reactions were muted. The shark footage wasn't particularly spectacular. When it was broadcast, the Manchester Evening News called it 'the biggest waste of time of them all'. So why do it again? Well, there are two competing arguments. The first is that nobody watches linear TV any more, so ITV hasn't really got anything to lose by remaking a 20-year-old flop. The second is that, if you parse the press release closely enough, you can just about tell that this is an attempt to improve upon what went before. Yes, the ITVness of it is the celebrity aspect – part of the show has clearly been designed to appeal to the very specific subsection of people who want to see Rachel Riley have a panic attack in a swimsuit – but there does seem to be more of a conservation focus this time too. The press release points out that, as well as almost getting eaten, the celebrities will 'come to appreciate sharks' valuable place on the food chain and in our ecosystem'. Better still, the show actively seems to want to commemorate Jaws by undoing some of the harm it has done to the reputation of sharks. That is, unless Henry gets his leg bitten off along the way, because that probably wouldn't help a lot. So is it silly? Yes. Does it signify that ITV is running out of ideas? Yes. Does it have the very worst title you have ever seen? Yes, and quite frankly the government should step in and legislate against television shows with names that you're expected to yelp at. But does SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters have potential? Absolutely. In fact, so odd is the format of the show's name that a franchise seems likely. If SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters is a success, then maybe we can expect other shows about animals that modern culture has taught us to fear, like BEAR! Celebrity Infested Forests, or SPIDER! Celebrity Infested Attics. Look me in the eye and tell me that you wouldn't want to see Peter Andre and Adam Woodyatt star in a series called FISH THAT SWIMS UP YOUR URINE STREAM AND GETS LODGED IN YOUR URETHRA! Celebrity Infested Rivers. I know I would.

Lenny Henry and Rachel Riley among stars diving with sharks in new show

Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters is set to air in 2025 as the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's three-time Oscar-winning film Jaws is celebrated this year. Participants also include presenter Ade Adepitan, Call The Midwife actress Helen George, comedian Ross Noble, McFly bassist Dougie Poynter and Amandaland actress Lucy Punch. ITV said that the 'group of ocean-phobic celebrities' will be heading to the Bahamas, where they will have to dive with bigger and more dangerous species of sharks. Bimini, the island where the show will be filmed, is home to around seven to 10 different types of the fish including Caribbean reef sharks, great hammerhead sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks. The celebrities will also take part in a series of challenges as they learn the importance of sharks to oceans' ecosystems. Karen Plumb, head of factual entertainment at production company Plimsoll Productions, said: 'The team at Plimsoll is uniquely positioned to pioneer this format that blends conservation with wildly entertaining pop culture. 'We're constantly looking for innovative approaches to wildlife storytelling and are certain that our fish-out-of-water spin – delivering 50 years after Jaws – will transform the world's perception of these critical predators before it's too late.' Sir Lenny, 66, who is known for sketch show The Lenny Henry Show, and sitcom Chef, has also been in fantasy series The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, and taken part in ITV celebrity singing programme The Masked Singer. Riley, 39, has been on BBC competitions Strictly Come Dancing, Richard Osman's House Of Games and The Weakest Link. She has previously voiced support for Bite-Back, a shark and marine conservation charity. I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! winner Poynter, 37, has previously campaigned for action on plastics to protect oceans and wildlife. He has released the book Plastic Sucks! You Can Make A Difference, and used his Instagram account to criticise the use of shark fins in medicine, and soup. Call The Midwife star George, 40, said in a post on Instagram: 'One of the most insane experiences of my life, learning about these incredible creatures, with equally incredible humans.' Katie Rawcliffe, head of entertainment commissioning at ITV, said: 'We're super excited to be combining the work of Plimsoll – a blue chip natural history production company – with the expertise of ITV Entertainment. 'Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters promises to be a once in a lifetime challenge for some of the bravest celebrities out there.' Bite-Back's founder Graham Buckingham has previously said that Jaws is not a 'documentary', and pushed for the public to 'learn to see them (sharks) as awesome, fascinating and incredible creatures worthy of protection'. According to the Natural History Museum, shark attacks fell to the lowest level in more than three decades last year, with the International Shark Attack File saying that 47 people were hurt in 'unprovoked shark attacks' in 2024.
