SUNY Canton offers free Clean Energy Training; low-cost STEM day camps

CANTON, N.Y. (WWTI) – SUNY Canton's Center for Workforce, Community & Industry Partnerships is partnering with the Adirondack North Country Association to provide free clean energy trainings and low-cost STEM summer day camps. Funded by a NYSERDA Clean Energy grant, five workforce trainings will occur on campus from May to July and are open to the public. SUNY Canton partners with local Auto Industry for on-the-job training BPI for Energy Audits: May 28-29, 5 to 8 p.m. This program helps participants learn the basics of home energy assessments, using diagnostic techniques to assess building performance and recommend energy-saving solutions. This course is ideal for homeowners, contractors, appraisers, inspectors, HVAC professionals, and construction specialists who want to increase their knowledge in energy auditing and building performance analysis. Photovoltaic Solar TrainingTraining Cohort 1: May 19-22, 5 to 7 p.m. and May 24, 8 a.m. to 4 Cohort 2: June 2-5, 5 to 7 p.m. and June 7, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees will learn the basics of photovoltaic systems and safe handling and installation of components. Training is four weekday evenings and an eight-hour weekend lesson. No prior electrical experience is required. The course covers series and parallel circuits, multimeter use, battery care, and system layout planning. Heat Pump TrainingTraining Cohort 1: June 9-12, 5 to 8 Cohort 2: June 23-26, 5 to 8 p.m. This course is for HVAC professionals, design engineers, and technology enthusiasts, covering refrigeration basics and heat pump component sizing through building load analysis. It includes insights on inverters and indoor cassettes and offers 12 hours of professional development. SUNY Canton offering no-cost peer support microcredentials EV MaintenanceTraining Cohort 1: July 7-8, 8 a.m. to 5 Cohort 2: July 14-18, 8 a.m. to 5 Cohort 3: July 21-22, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This course teaches electric vehicle technology, systems, and safety to workers in vehicle maintenance and repair. Participants will learn about EVs, ensuring safe work practices, and will complete a 20-question exam for a certificate. They receive a set of EV safety gloves valued at $200. EPA 608 TrainingJuly 7-10, 5 to 8 Exam: July 14, 5 p.m. This 10-hour training course and certification exam from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is for HVAC and refrigeration appliance technicians. Technicians must be certified to handle equipment that may release ozone-depleting refrigerants. This also includes appliances with most substitute refrigerants, like HFCs. Technicians must pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification. North Country SBDC at SUNY Canton: A New Name, Same Mission Through a partnership with the Adirondack North Country Association and supported by a NYSERDA grant, two STEM summer day camps will be provided at a discounted rate of $50 per camper in addition to workforce training. STEM CampJuly 28-Aug. 1, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. First to fifth graders can explore aeronautics and rocketry through hands-on activities like assembling foam gliders, rubber band-powered airplanes, model rockets, catapults, and dragsters. RC Car & Aero STEM CampJuly 7-11, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students in sixth to ninth grade will spend the week focused on remote-control (RC) car technology and aeronautical engineering. Each camper will receive an RC car to learn to drive, race and maintain. They will study car characteristics, changing gears and shocks, and how different parts influence the car's performance. For aeronautics, campers will learn the basics of airplanes and rockets by building their own model rocket and wooden gliders.
