AI drones to monitor crowds for Simhastha Kumbh Mela
Nashik: The Nashik rural police are using AI-powered drone cameras to prepare for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
The police, on the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan, deployed a drone to estimate the crowd size at Kushawarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar.
The third Shravan Somvar is a major event that draws hundreds of thousands of devotees to Trimbakeshwar which is home to one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas.
Pilgrims from all over the country come to visit the temple and take a holy dip in the Kushawarta Kund. Many also embark on a challenging 20 to 40-kilometer circumambulation of Brahmagiri mountain, often starting their journey just after midnight.
According to a senior police official, around 2 lakh devotees had arrived in the area between Sunday evening and Monday morning.
Additional SP Aditya Mirkhelkar, while talking to TOI, said, "We successfully tested an AI drone to check the crowd density and headcount at Kushawarta. A drone was also used as a public announcement (PA) system to pass on instructions to the devotees for their safety and security."
The experiment of using drone technology was successful and this technology will now come in handy for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbha Mela in Nashik city and Trimbakeshwar in 2027.

Under the guidance of superintendent of police SP Balasaheb Patil, drones with AI-enabled cameras were specifically used on the third Shravan Somvar, considering the rush of devotees, to ascertain crowd density and headcount as a drill for the upcoming Kumbh Mela.
Ahead of the Kumbh, the rural police will have another opportunity to check their preparedness during the third Shravan Somvar next year. A heavy bandobast, comprising over 500 policemen and home guards, was deployed in Trimbakeshwar town as part of the security measures.
