Probe launched into university harassment

PESHAWAR/TIMARGARA: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has taken notice of the alleged harassment of female students by a lecturer at Malakand University and has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has directed the committee to submit a comprehensive report, while Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has instructed the police, district administration, and university authorities to ensure a transparent probe. According to an official notification issued by the CM's Secretariat, a two-member inquiry committee has been constituted. The committee includes Additional Secretary of the Administration Department, Asif Rahim, and AIG Establishment, Sonia Shamroz. They have been tasked with gathering all relevant evidence and recording statements. The Deputy Commissioner and DPO of Lower Dir will assist in the investigation. The committee has been directed to submit its report within 15 days and to register a case if the allegations are proven. Condemning the incident, the Governor termed it a serious concern for the academic community. He stated that harassment in educational institutions is unacceptable and must be dealt with firmly. "Such disgraceful incidents push women backward in education and society," he remarked, adding that K-P's traditions and Pakhtun culture strongly discourage such behavior. He further stated that such incidents of harassment cast a shadow over the reputation and quality of higher education institutions. He also criticized the provincial government, stating that it has lost interest in university matters beyond recruitment. On the other hand, police on Sunday arrested Professor Abdul Haseeb and his mobile phone has also been taken into custody in which dozens of objectionable videos of girls have been reportedly found. The incident has become top trend on social media, forcing the government to take notice of it. The accused is already married and said to be a resident of Bara, Khyber tribal district.
