Demerit system to be implemented in September 2026

JOHANNESBURG - The points demerit system will be implemented in September next year according to new gazetted dates for the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act.
The AARTO Act has been piloted in Johannesburg and Tshwane.
From December, it will be rolled out to 69 municipalities including Cape Town and Durban.
But, the date for the demerit system has been set for next September.
The system allocates points for traffic violations, leading to suspensions or cancellations.
Learner drivers have just six points before a three-month suspension, while licence holders have 15 points.
