Eagles' Training Camp: Vic Fangio provides an update on Philadelphia's CB competition
As the Eagles' first preseason game approaches, the starting cornerback job across from Quinyon Mitchell remains up for grabs. Third-year player Kelee Ringo has been competing with veteran Adoree' Jackson throughout camp, and neither player has gained the advantage thus far. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio shared his thoughts on the position battle ahead of Monday's padded practice. "It's close," Fangio said. "I think both of them are having a good camp. But it's close. I've been happy with both of them, we'll see." As of today, Jackson has started with the first-team defense in five training camp sessions while Ringo has started in four. Ringo, a 2023 fourth-round pick, is aiming to take on a larger role in the Eagles' secondary following the departures of Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers in free agency. Meanwhile, Jackson brings plenty of experience with 82 career starts, though the 29-year-old may be showing signs of decline, starting only five times in 14 games for the Giants last year. Fangio did praise the nine-year veteran, stating Jackson has "had a good camp and competed well." One dark-horse candidate who might shake things up in the competition is Eli Ricks. The former undrafted free agent is putting together impressive outings in training camp, breaking up multiple passes and intercepting Jalen Hurts on an overthrown pass intended for Saquon Barkley. 'I definitely would say I've grown much every year, even though I didn't play as much last year as my rookie year,' Ricks said. 'I definitely feel like I've grown every year, mentally. I'm much more confident. This is only my second year in the same defense. My first year, I had a new defensive coordinator. The second year, I had a new one. So, I feel much more comfortable, this being my second year in the defense. So, I feel like I'm only growing and getting better.' Ricks, 6-2, 190 pounds with a 32' arm length, has appeared in 23 games for the Eagles, allowing just a 54.5 completion percentage when targeted. Still just 23 years old, there's plenty of time for Ricks to develop into a starting-caliber cornerback. "He has made some plays. He needs to eliminate the negative ones, too. He's going to get a bunch of snaps in the preseason and hopefully that will show itself," Fangio said of Ricks. Update: Eagles add a third participant to CB competition In an intriguing and interesting move that'll add more cornerback depth, the Eagles are acquiring cornerback Jakorian Bennett from the Raiders for Thomas Booker. Bennett became the odd man out in a Raiders cornerback rotation that includes second-year cover guy Darien Porter, Eric Stokes, and Decamerion Richardson. Philadelphia Eagles legend Eric Allen prepares for NFL Hall of Fame, while training camp intensifies
Full pads. Cooler temps. Higher stakes. Eagles training camp at the NovaCare Complex had the look and feel of real football, as players locked in with just over a week to go until their preseason opener. And while the breeze may have brought relief from the heat, it didn't cool off the competition, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The spotlight continues to shine on the Eagles' young and talented defense. First-round rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell turned heads on Friday, taking reps with the starting unit. And the battle for a starting cornerback role is heating up in the wake of Darius Slay's departure, with Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson both making strong impressions. "When you're in competition, the main thing you can focus on is who you are as a man," Ringo said. "We just want to see each other win. Continue to work on our technique, we're all trying to sharpen each other." Jackson echoed that mindset, saying, "The rent is due every day. You've got to come out and prove yourself." On the injury front, DeVonta Smith and Zack Baun remained sidelined with back issues. Nolan Smith is recovering from a concussion. The team gets a break Saturday before returning to the field on Sunday. Off the field, a franchise legend is preparing for football's biggest honor. Former Eagles cornerback Eric Allen will officially be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday in Canton, Ohio. Allen was a second-round pick by the Eagles in 1988 and spent seven seasons in Philadelphia, earning five Pro Bowl nods during his time in midnight green and finishing his 14-year NFL career with 54 interceptions, tied for 21st in league history. "I always took a lot of pride in playing corner," Allen said. "I never wanted to transition. The impact I could have at that position was something that helped the football team." The voice of the Eagles, Merrill Reese, who called Allen's entire career in Philly, said the "Hall call" is long overdue. "He was physically gifted, but more than that, he studied, he watched tape. He should've gone in years ago," Reese said. Former teammate Mike Quick shared similar sentiments and a little humor when reflecting on Allen's greatness. "He was one of the best at the position the entire time he played," Quick said. "Quite honestly, he was one of the guys that made me realize, okay, maybe it's time for me to retire. He was that good."

Gilmore Could Be Tug-Of-War Signing For Cowboys vs. Eagles
Gilmore Could Be Tug-Of-War Signing For Cowboys vs. Eagles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The entirety of the Philadelphia Eagles put on a display of dominance last season that culminated in a triumph in Super Bowl LIX. Looking around the depth chart, any weakness was hard to identify if even applicable. Advertisement The Dallas Cowboys, their NFC East rivals, cannot at this time quite make that boast. Philadelphia's defensive front led by monstrous defensive tackle Jalen Carter earned plenty of shine and linebacker Zack Baun became one of the best stories around the NFL. In some ways, the excellence of the Eagles' secondary took a back seat. But that did not stop a breakout campaign from their young stars. Both Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean shined in their rookie seasons. Eli Ricks and Kelee Ringo represent the other budding pieces in the secondary all ready to repeat their success again in 2025. But could this group explore the addition of some veteran talent? Advertisement Super Bowl champion and NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore remains a free agent. Gilmore has no leaning as to his next destination. Though he's made it clear he wants to play – it just has to be in the "right situation." Dallas Cowboys fans are clamoring for "America's Team'' to bring back "Gilly,'' an effective player for the team in 2023. But if he wants the insider track to a Super Bowl? If this becomes an NFC East tug-of-war? The Eagles signed Adoree' Jackson during free agency so there is some veteran flavor to this young cornerbacks room. However, Gilmore became a mercenary to help contending teams in the latter stages of his career and joining the Eagles would be a strong decision on his part if he seeks another shot at a championship. Advertisement For Philadelphia (as with Dallas), it's a move that would not, in theory, cost a lot. While the Eagles are more aggressive in these situations, thanks to general manager Howie Roseman, Jerry Jones is in wait-and-see mode. They have valid needs at the position as DaRon Bland is the only healthy and proven guy. In the end, it might be Gilmore's choice and one he might not make until training camps begin July 22. Browns Trade Of Ex First-Round Pick To Eagles Stirs Rumor Mill
Browns Trade Of Ex First-Round Pick To Eagles Stirs Rumor Mill originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Eagles may be eyeing Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II as a potential trade target to strengthen their defensive backfield, according to rumors being stirred up by league insiders. Advertisement What would the Browns be thinking here? And what would the Eagles be getting here? With Kelee Ringo battling veteran Adoree' Jackson for the CB2 spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean locked into the slot, the Eagles are reportedly exploring options to add depth and competition to their secondary. Would Newsome work? The Browns selected Newsome in the first round (26th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team after finishing his rookie season with 37 combined tackles and nine pass deflections in 12 games. The 2021 first-round pick posted career highs in 2023 with 49 tackles, 14 passes defensed and two interceptions, including a memorable 34-yard pick-six against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Advertisement But he had faded since, and during the 2024 season, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski demoted him to the third cornerback on the depth chart - and that was done despite the Browns having exercised Newsome's fifth-year option worth $13.37 million guaranteed. His season ended prematurely when he was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. So maybe the Browns have tired of the player. And in Philly? Newsome's versatility might be valuable to the Eagles. According to Pro Football Focus, he has played 1,428 snaps at outside cornerback and 1,163 snaps at slot cornerback, meaning he could seamlessly rotate between positions based on matchups. Advertisement This flexibility would allow defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to move players around without significant drop-off in coverage quality, while providing immediate competition for the CB2 role between Ringo and Jackson. What about the money? Cleveland might want to dump out ... and the Eagles would be asked Eagles to absorb Newsome's $13.3 million fully guaranteed contract for 2025. That's no bargain. But Newsome's combination of youth, experience, and proven ability makes him an intriguing option for an Eagles team looking to strengthen every aspect of their defense. ... and his relative failure puts him on the Browns rumor mill. Adoree Jackson Embraces Old-School Coaching Style in Eagles Secondary
Adoree Jackson Embraces Old-School Coaching Style in Eagles Secondary originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fresh off signing a one-year deal worth $1.75 million with the Philadelphia Eagles, veteran cornerback Adoree Jackson is already resonating with the team's no-nonsense defensive culture. The former Giants and Titans standout is now entering his ninth NFL season and finds himself adjusting to the old-school coaching philosophy of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio—a transition he welcomes. Advertisement 'Vic is one of those coaches that just respects hard work,' Jackson said earlier this month. 'He might not say much to you. But every now and then, he kind of reminds me how my mom and pops is. It's not like he never wants to give anyone credit, but he's like, 'you're doing what you're supposed to do.'' That comparison speaks volumes. While some players might struggle under Fangio's tight-lipped style, Jackson sees it as a reflection of deeper respect—earned, not given. The understated praise and high expectations have struck a personal chord, especially for a player trying to prove he still has starting-caliber production left in his game. Jackson is vying to start alongside Kelee Ringo in a revamped secondary. With veterans Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers no longer on the roster, Philadelphia needed experienced reinforcements—and Jackson brings plenty. Over eight NFL seasons, the former first-round pick has totaled 404 tackles, 61 pass breakups, six forced fumbles, and four interceptions across 82 career starts. The Eagles brought him in to add veteran stability and competition in a cornerback room that also features rookie standout Quinyon Mitchell and versatile defensive back Cooper DeJean. Jackson's buy-in to Fangio's style could prove essential for his role. Advertisement 'A lot of other coaches who are very vocal—as he is—but it's different,' Jackson explained. 'Like you understand, if he's saying something to you, it's either to correct you or he's not going to give you a compliment just to give you one. You really gotta keep working and stacking days to earn that.' That mindset aligns perfectly with the culture Philadelphia is trying to build. After finishing the 2023 season as one of the league's worst defenses, Fangio engineered a dramatic turnaround in 2024, leading the Eagles to the top-ranked unit en route to a Super Bowl championship. His methods may not always come with fanfare, but they get results—and players like Jackson are taking notice. 'He's got the right coaches around him,' Jackson added. 'So if he says something, you can talk to him, but then you've got the position coaches to articulate a little better for him. They all go hand-in-hand, but being around Vic is pretty cool.' With a starting job up for grabs and a defensive culture that values production over praise, Jackson seems ready to rise—and Fangio might just be the one to get the best out of him.
