More keep your messages as private as possible by keeping chats in the app. So what exactly is Advanced Chat Privacy, when should you use it and how do you turn it on? WhatsApp, used by billions of people, is end-to-end encrypted, which means no one can read your chats — even WhatsApp. Yet when using WhatsApp, certain features could impact your privacy, especially in group chats, where other users can export your chats or download photos and videos. More recently, the ability to use Meta AI, also known as the blue circle, in group chats means others could use the tool without your permission. It is with this in mind that WhatsApp has introduced Advanced Chat Privacy, a feature that builds on its end-to-end encryption to keep your messages as private as possible by keeping chats in the app. So what exactly is Advanced Chat Privacy, when should you use it and how do you turn it on? What Is WhatsApp Advanced Chat Privacy? The Advanced Chat Privacy feature builds on previous WhatsApp tools aiming to help control how your messages are shared and used by others. These include disappearing messages — which I am a huge fan of — and chat lock. Available in chats and groups, Advanced Chat Privacy helps prevent others from taking content outside of WhatsApp when you may want extra privacy. When the setting is on, you can block others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone and using messages for AI features. Advanced Chat Privacy can be toggled on alongside other WhatsApp Privacy features. When Should You Use WhatsApp Advanced Chat Privacy? 'WhatsApp groups are increasingly an extension of our real world networks, some of which are far closer than others,' Meta's WhatsApp explained in a blog when launching the feature in April. Taking this into account, according to Meta, the feature is best used when talking with groups where you may not know everyone closely, WhatsApp advises. It cites the example of someone talking about health challenges in a support group or organising a community about something important to you. How To Turn On WhatsApp Advanced Chat Privacy You can turn on Advanced Chat Privacy by tapping the chat name, then tapping on Advanced Chat Privacy. 'Quick Recap' will let WhatsApp users scan unread chats in seconds: Details

Reportedly, the Quick Recap tool will let WhatsApp users catch up on unread messages across multiple chats, while keeping privacy protected through Meta's Private Processing New Delhi WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature called Quick Recap, which is aimed at helping users quickly catch up on unread messages across multiple chats. According to a report by WABetaInfo, Quick Recap will allow users to select up to five conversations and receive a summary of what they missed, without having to scroll through every message. The feature is currently available in the latest Android beta (version 2.25.21.12) and is expected to be released in a future update. The report stated that the feature will remain opt-in, giving users full control over whether they want to use it. Quick Recap: How it works According to the report, Quick Recap will give a better summary than the usual unread message preview. It will be helpful for users who have not checked WhatsApp in a while, as it shows the main points of conversations. This makes it easier to catch up, especially in busy group chats. The feature will be entirely optional and can be turned on in the app's settings as per users' choice. Once enabled, users will be able to tap the Quick Recap icon in the Chats tab, select up to five conversations, and receive concise recaps within seconds. However, chats protected by Advanced Chat Privacy will not be eligible for this feature. Quick Recap uses Meta's AI technology to generate summaries, but it does so while protecting user privacy through a system called Private Processing. When users request a recap, the selected message data is processed in a secure, isolated environment. This ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can see the content of the messages or the summaries generated. Apart from this Quick Recap, WhatsApp is also using Private Processing for other AI-powered features that are currently under testing. This includes message summarisation of an individual or group chats and for AI-based writing suggestions.

WhatsApp to add ‘Quick Recap' feature to summarise multiple chats at once, report says

Meta is working on bringing a slew of new AI-powered features to WhatsApp. One of these is a recap feature called Quick Recap, which will give users a quick summary of unread messages. According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, this feature is currently under development and was spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.25.21.12).Though the feature is not yet available to beta testers, the report suggests that Quick Recap is aimed at improving how users navigate through lengthy or multiple chat threads. The feature is reportedly being built on WhatsApp's earlier message summaries feature, which allows users to get an overview of unread messages in a single conversation. This summary feature is currently available in the back to the new Quick Recap feature, it is reportedly said to be a bit more enhanced than the summary feature. It will enable users to select up to five chats simultaneously and receive a concise, AI-generated summary of key messages from each conversation. It is said to be designed to help users save the time and effort of scrolling through endless message threads, especially after being away from the app for a to access this feature As per the screenshot of the feature shared by WABetaInfo, to access Quick Recap, users will be able to go to the Chats tab, choose multiple conversations, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select the Quick Recap option. Once activated, Meta's in-house AI will process unread messages and produce a summarised version of what's been discussed — offering a quick and clean way to catch concerns The report notes that the Quick Recap feature is integrated with Meta's Private Processing technology, which promises a privacy-first approach that ensures user messages remain confidential even during AI processing. Meta earlier noted that its Private Processing uses end-to-end encryption, secure enclaves, and isolated computation to protect data. As a result, neither WhatsApp nor Meta can view the original messages or the generated summaries. The AI never processes readable data outside the secure enclave, safeguarding content even during feature Additionally, the report noted that this new Quick Recap feature will be completely optional for users. It will need to be enabled manually through Settings and won't be turned on by default. Any chats protected by WhatsApp's Advanced Chat Privacy settings will automatically be excluded from the availability expected soon As for availability, the Quick Recap feature is currently available only in preview via the Android beta channel. WhatsApp is expected to roll it out gradually to testers in future beta builds before releasing it more widely to all Android users.- Ends

AI-powered chat summaries are coming to WhatsApp

Meta is adding a new Message Summaries feature to WhatsApp that uses AI to summarize unread messages in a few bullet points. The feature is built on the Private Processing technique Meta announced at Llamacon in April, and claims to let AI work with content in WhatsApp without exposing any of it to Meta itself. Once the feature appears in your app, you just tap on the onscreen banner over your unread messages with that says "Summarize privately" to receive a summary from Meta AI. The Message Summaries feature is rolling out to WhatsApp users in the US chatting in English first, but Meta says it hopes to "bring it to other languages and countries later this year." The company pitches summaries as an easier way to catch-up on what you missed if you haven't checked your phone or you're just in too many chats. AI is by no means foolproof at even simple tasks like this — Apple's trouble with notification summaries was only a few months ago — but the tool could be appealing to people in particularly large and active chats. The real novelty of the summaries is how Meta claims to be deploying them without walking back the private nature of WhatsApp chats. The company has a blog post and whitepaper digging into the details of how Private Processing works, but on first blush it sounds similar to Private Cloud Compute, the method Apple uses to call on more demanding AI features without exposing its users' data. Using end-to-end encryption and a secure cloud environment, WhatsApp messages can be processed without data being accessed while its happening, or saved after the fact. Importantly, all of this is still optional. Summaries won't be provided without you asking for them first, and the feature is disabled by default. Meta also says you can exclude chats from being shared with the company's AI via the Advanced Chat Privacy feature.

WhatsApp will soon summarise your chats privately, thanks to Meta AI

Meta introduced Meta AI to WhatsApp in April 2024. Since then, the company has been actively working to bring new features on board. These features aim to make WhatsApp more user-friendly and efficient. Adding on to the list, Meta's messaging app is currently working on to introduce a message summarisation feature. Powered by MetaAI, the feature is designed to summerise your chats in personal conversations, groups, and channels. This will not only help you understand the crux of the message, but will also save you time. According to the WABeta report, this feature has already been rolled out for the WhatsApp Beta version. advertisementWhatsApp message summarisation featureWhatsApp is working on a new feature that will let you catch up on long conversations more easily by offering private summaries of unread messages, powered by Meta AI. This function is particularly useful for group chats and busy channels, where staying on top of new messages can be overwhelming. How will it work? According to the WABeta report, when a conversation has a high volume of unread messages, a button will appear prompting you to generate a summary. If you choose to use it, your request will be securely handled using Meta's Private Processing technology, an infrastructure specifically designed to protect message content. The entire process is carried out in a secure environment, ensuring that neither WhatsApp, Meta, nor any third party has access to your messages. The summary is delivered directly back to your device without any of the message content being stored or Despite the strong privacy safeguards in place — with many parts of the Private Processing system even being open-sourced for scrutiny by security researchers — the feature will not be available in chats where Advanced Chat Privacy is turned on. This is not due to concerns about the technology's security, but rather to respect users who prefer not to use AI-based tools in certain summarisation option will appear in chats, groups, and channels, giving users a quick way to regain context without trawling through every message — all while upholding end-to-end encryption. The feature is expected to be included in a future Advanced Chat Privacy featureMeta has introduced a new Advanced Chat Privacy setting on WhatsApp, offering users even greater control over their conversations—particularly useful in group chats where not all participants are personally familiar with one latest feature builds on WhatsApp's existing privacy toolkit, which already includes disappearing messages and chat locks. Now, you can go a step further by disabling chat exports, stopping media from being saved automatically, and blocking the use of your messages with external AI activated, Advanced Chat Privacy applies to everyone in the chat. To enable it, simply open the chat or group, tap the name at the top, and choose the new privacy option. Meta says this setting is designed with sensitive discussions in mind—especially in cases where people may be discussing personal matters but aren't closely goal is to give users more peace of mind, knowing that their content remains within the app and under their control.
