Consumers Energy Expands Zeeland Natural Gas Plant to Grow Michigan's Energy Reliability

JACKSON, Mich., May 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- An expansion of Consumers Energy's Zeeland natural gas plant is underway and anticipated to be complete mid-June prior to the summer peak generation period, reinforcing the company's long-standing commitment to delivering reliable, affordable and flexible energy to Michigan communities. This investment is part of Consumers Energy's broader Reliability Roadmap, a strategic initiative focused on modernizing infrastructure and enhancing grid resilience to prepare for Michigan's energy future. "This expansion of our Zeeland facility is a powerful step forward in our commitment to reliability," said Norm Kapala, vice president of generation operations at Consumers Energy. "As demand for electricity continues to evolve, we're taking proactive measures to ensure our customers continue to receive dependable energy around the clock—especially as our communities grow." The Zeeland plant expansion will increase the generation capacity of the highly efficient natural gas plant through the installation of new technology to improve performance and flexibility. This includes an Advanced Gas Path (AGP) system to boost power output and fuel efficiency, along with an Advanced Fuel System (AFS) to better control how fuel is mixed. These upgrades will allow the turbines to generate more electricity and respond faster to demand, while staying within existing annual emission limits and result in 50 additional megawatts for customers along with a 2.5% improvement in fuel efficiency. "We're building a stronger, smarter energy grid that protects our communities and supports our state's economic growth." GE Vernova has announced plans to install its new AGP XPAND upgrade at the 1,250 MW Bazyan [Bazian] Power Plant in Iraqi Kurdistan, operated by Taurus Energy [Taurus Arm], part of the Onex Group. The announcement was made at a ceremony in Sulaymaniyah, attended by H.E. Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and H.E. Kamal Mohammad Salih Khalil, Minister of Electricity. The AGP XPAND upgrade, building on GE Vernova's Advanced Gas Path (AGP) technology, is designed to boost the output of 9E.03 gas turbines by up to 7 percent, improve efficiency by approximately 1 percent, and increase exhaust energy by up to 2.6 percent-enhancing both steam and power production capabilities for combined heat and power plants. Bazyan Power Plant, powered by four 9E.03 and two 9F.04 turbines, will be the first site globally to deploy this technology. The upgrade is expected to enhance capacity and supply additional electricity to the Kurdistan Region, Mosul, and Salahaldin, according to a statement from GE Vernova. Additionally, Taurus Energy signed a 17-year long-term service agreement with GE Vernova, including Iraq's first 9E Rotor Life Extension package, strengthening their strategic collaboration. The project covers 46 gas turbines across 12 sites, expected to add up to 500 MW to the national grid by summer 2025. The new upgrades are part of a broader effort by the Ministry to modernize the power generation infrastructure to enhance grid stability and capacity, while meeting the growing energy demand in Iraq in alignment with the country's energy transition efforts. The broader upgrade project regards 46 gas turbines across 12 power plants, on the way to adding up to 500 megawatts (MW) to the national grid before the summer of 2025. This modernization is expected to improve operational flexibility and boost output, efficiency, and availability of the power generation assets. Some of the power plants included in this project – Ninawa, Al Diwaniyah, Hilla, Karbala, Shat Al Basra, Najibiya, Samawa, Dhiqar, Al Khairat and Al Haidariya– already transitioned from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to natural gas, with a capacity increase of approximately 260 MW. The other plants are expected to be modernized within the summer of 2025, with an expected additional increase in capacity of approximately 250 MW. In addition, GE Vernova announced the successful installation of its Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades on several 9.E gas turbines powering Al-Quds, and Dhiqar power plants, and MXLII upgrades on 13E2 gas turbines powering Al Mansouriya power plant. The expected output increases of up to 6% for each of these power plants will enable Iraq's Ministry of Electricity (MoE) to generate more electricity using the same amount of fuel. In addition, as part of services and upgrade agreement announced in 2024 with MoE to enhance the availability of power plants across the country, GE Vernova completed comprehensive maintenance projects across several of these power plants corresponding to a total capacity of 3.7 gigawatts, including Qayyarah, Diwaniyah, Al-Haydariyah, and Baghdad South. These initiatives aim to enhance the long-term reliability and stability of Iraq's power sector. Eng. In April 2024, GE Vernova also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Iraqi government in Washington, D.C., during the visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani to the United States.
