How you can save money by recycling your old clothes and empty bottles
As households face tighter budgets, high street retailers are increasingly getting into secondhand and recycling initiatives. Previously the preserve of online marketplaces and secondhand shopping apps, retailers are now offering financial incentives in exchange for items such as used clothing and empty containers. Consumer expert Helen Dewdney, The Complaining Cow, outlines how consumers can benefit by exchanging unwanted goods for rewards. These programmes usually involve payments or vouchers for packaging materials that can be reused, including items destined for recycling bins, such as empty bottles and containers. Under the Shwopping scheme customers can donate old clothes to Oxfam and receive a £5 voucher to spend on purchases of more than £35 at M&S. Boots runs the Scan2Recycle programme, which accepts products difficult to recycle at home, including composite materials (metal and plastics) and non-recyclable items like toothpaste tubes and lotion pumps. Small cosmetics such as travel-sized products and samples are also accepted. Customers must download the app, wash and scan items to have them validated before dropping them off at participating stores. Recycling five or more eligible items earns £5 in Advantage Card points, redeemable on purchases over £10 within three days. View the full list of all the items that can be brought to their stores. Customers can bring any empty perfume bottle, regardless of where it was bought, to receive 15% off a same-day purchase at The Perfume Shop. The retailer also commits to planting a tree for each bottle donated. Through its Take Back scheme, customers may drop off at least three clothing items in a box at at more than 200 stores nationwide or arrange a courier collection, which River Island will pay for. Participants receive a £5 voucher valid on purchases over £40 for one month. Donations do not need to be River Island products. John Lewis offers two programs: BeautyCycle and FashionCycle. BeautyCycle provides a £5 voucher for spending over £50 when customers return five or more clean, empty beauty product containers from specified B Corp certified brands such as Clarins, Elemis, Aveda and L'Occitane. FashionCycle offers a £5 discount on clothing rentals over £50 in exchange for five clothing items, subject to certain restrictions. Customers can return qualifying Lush packaging to receive 50p per item or 5p per 10ml sample pot. Alternatively, five returned items can be exchanged for a face mask. H&M accepts a carrier bag of unwanted clothing or textiles of any brand or condition in-store and offers a £5 voucher for purchases over £25. Described as a 'miracle' by consumers, the Génifique Ultimate Serum is designed to repair skin damage and reduce the look of redness and fine lines. A selection of the health and beauty chain's own-brand No7 products have also been reduced, but one of the best value is this No7 Lift and Luminate Collection 5 Piece Gift Set, now £62.95 (worth £137.75). This sought-after collection comes packed with everything needed for a comprehensive skincare regime, boasting a day cream, night cream, eye cream, facial oil, and triple-action serum, all generously sized and offering incredible value for money. No7 claims this range is engineered to make users "feel as youthful on the outside" as they do "on the inside." The Night Cream merges the nourishing properties of shea butter with hyaluronic acid to revitalise the skin overnight. The Triple Action Eye Cream, brimming with ginseng extract, specifically takes aim at under-eye bags. The gift set has earned rave reviews, boasting a remarkable 4.6 out of five stars from 45 reviews on the Boots website. Users are vocal in their praise, with one delighted customer exclaiming: "Love all these products, No7 is the best on the market. Best product ever." For those in the market for a new hair tool to cut down on styling time this summer, the Shark FlexStyle Sparkle – Champagne Diamond Limited Edition was £299.99 but is now £269.99. The latest design gives Shark's hair-styling marvel a dazzling upgrade, embellished with over 20,000 crystals. Housed in a sturdy storage case, this set includes a Concentrator and Diffuser for drying, along with a Paddle Brush, Oval Brush, and two advanced 32mm auto-wrap Curlers that have been improved from earlier versions to enhance hair grip even further. The ingenious design of this tool lets you bid farewell to the desk clutter of multiple hairstyling gadgets by merging the functions of a hairdryer and curler into one device. Monitoring heat exposure 1,000 times a second, the FlexStyle ensures an even distribution of warm air whilst guarding against potential heat damage. With its trio of heat and airflow settings, users gain meticulous command over their drying, styling, and setting processes, tailoring their hairdos to perfection. For those on the hunt for a durable hair removal option, the Philips Satinelle epilator might be the ideal choice. Now slashed to more than half its original price, this nifty gadget offers a robust yet gentle hair removal experience, promising smoother legs in "as little as 10 minutes". Philips' two-year guarantee bolsters customers' confidence, with an ergonomically designed S-shaped handle that ensures ease of use for natural and precise movements across the body. This cordless wonder is equally efficient in the bath or shower – featuring an extra-wide epilator head perfect for tackling larger areas, complemented by a shaving head and trimming comb for that ultra-close shave. Despite its positives, some customers would prefer an attachment for smaller areas, with one remarking, 'it is not useful for face'. It also comes with a convenient pouch, making it a breeze to stash away or take along on holiday. There are some impressive fragrance offers, too, such as Givenchy's Ysatis Eau de Toilette, now £54.50 for 100ml instead of £109. This alluring fragrance is sure to leave a lasting impression. Relaunched with a contemporary bottle design while maintaining its soul since its 1984 debut, the captivating EDT opens with zesty Sicilian Mandarin Essence before blooming into a lush White Floral Bouquet, finally settling into the sultry warmth of Indonesian Patchouli Essence. Devoted Givenchy enthusiasts have claimed the floral and citrusy essences as their distinguishing aroma, with one dedicated fan stating: "I have been wearing Ysatis for over 20 years now and have no intention of stopping now. Perfume smells different on different skins but Ysatis suits mine and is suited for both day and evening wear." Another chimed in: "Worn this since the 80s. The bottle is not up to much but the perfume still smells lovely, but not as powerful and long lasting." Away from the sale, though, there are more deals to be had in the form of beauty boxes. They're currently offering a Premium Hair Beauty Box for £45, packed with 10 items worth around £220 designed to give you glossy, healthy locks. Alternatively, there's a Boots Self Care Beauty Box, worth £137 for £35.

Life Hack: How to recycle your beauty empties and earn free replacements at the same time
We are marking Sustainability Month this May and while recycling is a non-negotiable for most of us, the hack I'm sharing this week is how to make the most of loyalty schemes that take hard-to-recycle beauty products off your hands for recycling, and offer points you can convert into free products to replenish your supplies. In recent years, we have all — thankfully — become more conscious of the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling in particular is an area we are deeply familiar with, from sorting our household bins into waste, compost, glass and recycling, to taking part in the Re-Turn scheme over the past year. The Re-Turn scheme in particular has highlighted how recycling can help you to save money. For example, I add the money from my returned cans and bottles to a gift card for my local supermarket to make a family Christmas dinner feel free at the end of the year. While saving money is one very useful outcome, you can also be smart about your recycling in other ways, so it gets you free products to replace what you've been recycling. Here's how two big brands are incentivising customers to recycle their empty products. Boots CLIMATE & SUSTAINABILITY HUB Many products cannot be popped into your recycling bin due to being travel size, the materials they're made from and other factors. Wondering how best to recycle that mascara or lipstick tube? Or even your used toothpaste tube? Take the stress out of guessing and bring them to your local Boots. Recycle at Boot allows you to bring empty beauty, health, wellness, and dental products from any brand that can't be recycled at home while rewarding you for recycling. To take part and earn Advantage Card points, download the Recycle at Boots app and sign up. Upload images of your eligible recyclables, and once these are verified on the app, you can drop them off in your local store. Scan the QR code in the shop and deposit at least five items to instantly earn a reward voucher. With this voucher, you can earn 500 points when used with a spend of €10 or more. The scheme uses Scan2Recycle technology to help the environment and reward customers. It is aimed at hard-to-recycle products but will also accept most hard-to-recycle products sold in Boots stores. After dropping off the empties, they will be washed and sorted, ready for recycling into new usable products. Any remaining multi-material items will be recycled into Stormboard, a composite construction board material, similar to plywood, which has a lot of different uses. Organics will be processed through an industrial organics processor. Nothing goes to landfill, and nothing is incinerated. Sculpted by Aimee Aimee Connolly's popular makeup brand encourages the recycling of empty products through ReSculpted, helping customers earn points for the Beauty Club loyalty programme ( Members of this can earn points with purchases and other activities, including recycling empty makeup and skincare products. For every five empties you bring to them, you will earn 1,000 points, which can be redeemed on products, money off vouchers, and more. However, sheet masks and aerosols are not accepted for this. There is no need to rinse the packaging as long as there is no excess product inside. They can be returned by post, even if they have been cut up to use up every bit of the product inside. Pack the empties — at least five — and visit An Post Returns. Select Sculpted By Aimee from the retailer dropdown and choose ReSculpted as your reason for return. Enter your full name and email address, and remember to include a small note inside the parcel with your email and name to ensure you receive your Sculpted Rewards points. Products can also be recycled in-store. There is a recycling facility at their Grafton Street store for customers to recycle their used Sculpted by Aimee products and earn reward points. Boots announces new reward scheme in more than 800 stores across the UK
Boots is set to be rolling out a new reward scheme in more than 800 of its UK stores in response to customer demand. People will soon be able to recycle blister packs from any brand in the relevant stores. Those who have a Boots Advantage Card will receive a reward of 100 Advantage Card points – or £1 – every time they hand in five empty blister packs in one deposit and spend £5 in-store. After the blister packs or other empty health and beauty containers have been dropped off at Boots stores, they are sent to MYGroup, who separate the plastic and the foil. Blister packs cannot typically be recycled through household kerbside collections (Image: Getty Images) Blister packs cannot typically be recycled through household kerbside collections because of their combination of plastic and foil. This makes them complicated to process, meaning they usually go to landfill or incineration. MYGroup will be able to turn the recycled plastic into a material called MYBoardTM. This has a wide range of uses such as playground equipment, furniture, and construction materials. Meanwhile, the foil taken from the blister packs can be immediately reused. Candice Smith, from Boots, said: 'Taking medicines or vitamins in blister pack packaging is an essential part of everyday life for many of us – even more so during the winter when it is peak cough, cold season. Recommended reading: Aldi insider shares the secrets of one of its most popular aisles Aldi selling dupe of discontinued Cadbury chocolate which has shoppers 'buzzing' Morrisons introduces new feature to all its cafes to improve accessibility 'We know from our pilot scheme that people want a recycling solution for their empty blister packs, which is why we're now making it available in towns and cities across the country. 'We look forward to seeing the recycled blister packs take on a new life as playground equipment and furniture.' Boots joins other retailers including Superdrug and Aldi in running blister pack recycling initiatives.
