EV startup Matter launches ₹1.93 lakh Aera 5000+ e-bike, eyes IPO

Electric vehicle startup Matter, which launched its Aera 5000+ electric motorcycle in Mumbai priced at ₹1.93 lakh, is positioning the product as a direct alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles in the 150–200cc segment. Backed by US-based venture firm Helena, Matter says its product is designed not to compete with electric vehicles (EVs) but with petrol bikes. Capital 2B, Japan Airlines & Translink Innovation Fund (Canada), SB Invest, and othe₹are investo₹in the startup. Matter aims to take on ICE rivals like the Yamaha R15 V4 (₹1.85 lakh), TVS Apache RTR 160 (₹1.18 lakh), Bajaj Pulsar NS200 (₹1.45 lakh), and KTM 200 Duke (₹2.06 lakh). The Ahmedabad-based startup was in pilot mode until June 2025 and is now expanding across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. It aims to scale up from seven dealerships currently to 150 dealerships by the end of 2026, with a sales target of 50,000 units next year. The company expects to break even in the next three to five yea₹with a monthly run rate of 20,000–25,000 units. The Aera 5000+ comes with a 5 kWh battery and a certified range of 172 km, along with a four-speed manual gearbox—which the company claims is a first for an electric motorcycle in India. The company recently closed a $35 million Series B round, bringing its total funding to $75 million. Matter's post-money valuation now stands at $230 million. It plans to raise an additional $125 million in multiple tranches over the next three to four years, as part of a broader $200 million fundraising plan. 'The funds will be used to expand production, deepen research and development, and scale distribution,' Lalbhai said. 'We are targeting a public listing in the next three to four yea₹once we hit our revenue and growth milestones.' Matter has filed over 350 patents, with core components like the battery pack, gearbox, and powertrain developed in-house. Although the current Aera model uses rare-earth magnets, the company is working with a US-based firm on non-rare-earth motor technologies to mitigate future supply risks. 'India's motorcycle market is largely untouched by electrification. As more consume₹get options like Aera, we believe adoption will accelerate much like it did in scooters,' Lalbhai added.

Matter Aera 5000+ real-world range tested in Sport mode: Here's how far it went

The Matter Aera 5000+ comes with a battery capacity of 5 kWh (Tej Patel for HT Auto) Check Offers The Matter Aera 5000+ represents a new direction for electric motorcycles in India, with its manual gearbox and electric powertrain. Matter claims it has a range of 125 km in City mode, but we wanted to find out how it would perform when ridden in a sportier way. We did our ride in city traffic in Ahmedabad, where the bike was kept in Sport mode the entire time and we used aggressive throttle inputs, which is the ultimate test for any EV's efficiency. Matter Aera 5000+: Test setup: Route, mode, and riding style Our ride took place in Ahmedabad, navigating a mix of city traffic ranging from free-flowing stretches to signal-heavy bottlenecks. . The bike started with 98 per cent charge and an odometer reading of 891.2 km. For the entire duration, it was kept in Sport mode and ridden with aggressive throttle inputs, to simulate how a performance-focused rider might actually use it. Extrapolating this, the estimated real-world range in Sport mode works out to approximately 88 km on a full charge. Matter Aera 5000+: Real world energy efficiency With the Matter Aera 5000+ housing a 5 kWh battery pack, the real-world energy consumption during our test worked out to around 17.6 km/kWh. While this is lower than the expected efficiency in City mode, it is in line with expectations for a performance-focused ride in Sport mode. How it compares to claimed figures Matter officially claims 110 km of range in Sport mode for the Aera 5000+, presumably using moderate throttle inputs and standard test cycles. Our estimate of 88 km is a more aggressive, real-world riding condition. The energy use and range will depend on terrain, rider weight, and traffic, but the Aera still is a viable option for everyday commutes, even for riders who like spirited riding. Despite the heavy throttle use and constant riding in Sport mode, the Matter Aera 5000+ delivered a real-world range of 88 km, which is over 80 per cent of its claimed figure. Matter Aera 5000+ review, first ride: Say hello to India's first geared electric motorcycle

Ahmedabad isn't the first place that pops to mind when one thinks of an electric motorcycle revolution. But that all changed back in 2019, when a few enthusiastic individuals came together to create Matter. For those who may not have heard this name before, Matter is an Indian electric mobility startup headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Matter isn't just assembling EVs, it's building them from the ground up. The company designs and manufactures its motors, battery packs, software systems, and vehicle platforms in-house. Unlike many EV brands that rely on white-labeled imports, Matter has focused on indigenous innovation, with an emphasis on performance, technology, and rider engagement. Its first product, the Aera 5000+, is India's first geared electric motorcycle, aiming to provide a more traditional riding experience. To answer whether Matter succeeded in this quest, we were recently invited to their home base, to visit the production facility, hit a go-kart track and ride it in the the point of the gears? The Aera 5000+ is India's first geared electric motorcycle, and not in a gimmicky way. This is a ground-up motorcycle designed by a homegrown startup that's building its own powertrains, software stack, and even batteries in-house. There is a clear emphasis on controlling the entire production system from the ground up, allowing for more factors to be monitored and adjusted as needed. Sure, the facility isn't the most cutting-edge, but it can be one day, which is good enough for me. And from the moment you see the Aera in person, it doesn't scream 'eco-commuter.' It looks like a modern 200cc street-naked which has a muscular tank, sharp panels, LED lighting, and a distinct DRL signature. It's an EV that isn't apologising for being one. And that's refreshing. After we toured the facility, it was time to head to the track, which is nearly 30km away from the production facility. Subscribe to Auto Today MagazineMust Watch
