How to clean your dishwasher if it's smelling less than fresh
When you open your dishwasher, you expect your plates and glasses to be pristine with no signs of food or weird smells. But if a musty or rotten odor wafts into your face as soon as you open the door, you should clean your dishwasher ASAP. Like any other appliance — your microwave, coffee maker, washing machine and dryer — a dishwasher needs some care, too. Regular maintenance will keep it smelling fresh and running more efficiently, so your dishes sparkle. If you suspect your dishwasher could use a deep clean, first things first, locate your appliance's manual. If you don't have it, you can usually find one online. The manual can tell you the nitty gritty about your specific model so you can clean it properly. Can't find it? No problem, start here: This may seem like a no brainer, but just make sure you've taken all the dishes, cutlery and cups out of your dishwasher, and if you can, remove the bottom rack. This will make it easier to get in there to clean. The filter is located on the bottom of the machine. Gently unscrew it, and take the filter completely out. Start by soaking the filter in hot, soapy water, then scrub it clean with a brush. This should go without saying, but make sure all of the food particles are gone and there isn't any mold or buildup in any of the small crevices. Using a damp cloth, wipe off the dishwasher's gasket or seals (the part around the frame that seals it shut) and the interior walls. Put the filter back in its place, roll the bottom rack back in and place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the top or bottom rack. Then, run a hot water cycle, and when it's done, it's clean! White vinegar is touted as a natural fabric softener because it excels at dissolving residual detergent, mineral deposits, or 'body soil' such as sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells, which can otherwise make fabric feel rough and inflexible. By mixing vinegar into the washing machine's dispenser, it addresses all the issues that can make clothes uncomfortable to wear. Using vinegar in your laundry can do wonders, making whites brighter and eliminating those stubborn mildew smells along with intense sweat or other odours. It's also great at preventing pet hair and lint from sticking to your clothes. However, a word of caution – too much vinegar can cause chaos for both your washing machine and garments; overuse or incorrect use may harm fabrics or lead to corrosion. Indeed, frequent douses of vinegar could damage the rubber parts and seals of your faithful washing machine. Jennifer Kaminshi, from Affresh appliance care, warned Better Homes and Gardens: "White vinegar is an acid that can break down the rubber gaskets and hoses in your washing machine, leading to costly damage." The home advice experts at Better Homes and Gardens have also offered their advice, recommending reining in vinegar use particularly when washing different colours together. They've given a particularly strict caution against mixing vinegar with any kind of chlorine bleach. These substances combined create harmful fumes that are anything but fun at a party. Plus, stretchy materials don't take kindly to white vinegar - its acidic nature can destroy the elasticity in your fitness gear, leaving your stretchable attire disappointingly loose.
