African-European Ministerial Meeting addresses Egyptian candidate Khaled Anani for post of UNESCO of Director-General
Khaled Anani- File Photo CAIRO – 23 May 2025: The final communiqué of the African-European Ministerial Meeting in Brussels tackled the African Union's endorsement of Dr. Khaled El-Enany as a candidate for the position of of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Friday. The third African Union–European Union Ministerial Meeting, held on May 21, 2025, in Brussels, reviewed the progress made in implementing the Shared Vision 2030 for a renewed partnership between Africa and Europe. The meeting also set the stage for the upcoming seventh AU–EU Summit, to be held in Africa later this year, marking the 25th anniversary of the partnership. The communiqué highlighted the European Union's understanding of the African Union's endorsement of Dr. El-Enany's candidacy for the 2025–2029 term, the Ministry added. This endorsement reflects a unified continental stance on the importance of African representation in leading international institutions, as well as confidence in the Egyptian candidate's ability to advocate for Africa's priorities within UNESCO, said the Egyptian Ministry. Dr. El-Enany's candidacy continues to gain international momentum, with Austria and Slovakia becoming the latest countries to officially declare their support last week, the Ministry continued. The Executive Council of the African Union has endorsed the nomination of Egyptian candidate Dr. Khaled El-Enany for the position of UNESCO Director-General. The AU's endorsement was announced during the 44th session of the Executive Council, held in Addis Ababa on February 14–15.

FM Lauds Distinguished Relations between Egypt, Belgium
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty praised the distinguished relations between Egypt and Belgium, expressing his aspiration to continue strengthening them towards broader horizons, particularly in the economic, investment, educational and health sectors. This came during Abdelatty's meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot on the sidelines of the African-European Ministerial Meeting held in Brussels. Abdelatty expressed his hope that Belgian companies, especially those operating in the fields of clean energy and pharmaceuticals, would benefit from the investment guarantees provided by the European Union to Egypt within the framework of the strategic partnership between the two sides. He stressed the importance of including Egypt among the destinations of Belgian economic missions. He reviewed the economic reforms undertaken by the Egyptian state and the investment incentives available in the Egyptian market. He also expressed hope for launching trilateral cooperation to implement joint projects in Africa in the field of capacity building, in addition to cooperation in the area of migration through opening pathways for legal migration or seasonal labor, within the framework of integration between the labor markets of both countries. Abdelatty emphasized the importance Egypt places on the issue of recovering Egyptian antiquities that were taken out of the country illegally, in implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. He highlighted the significance of antiquities as a vital part of Egypt's historical and cultural heritage and expressed hope for cooperation with the Belgian authorities to work towards their restitution. The meeting also touched on a number of regional and international issues, foremost among them the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's efforts to provide all forms of support to the residents of Gaza and expressed appreciation for the support extended by the Belgian side to the Palestinians in the Strip. He stressed the importance of increasing aid to match the scale of needs, given the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. The two ministers also exchanged views on the latest developments in Syria, Sudan, Somalia, and the Red Sea region. Minister Abdelatty underscored the importance of European support in enabling Egypt to address regional challenges, taking into account the interconnection between the security and stability of the Middle East and that of Europe.

FM meets Cypriot counterpart
Basant Ahmed Foreign minister Badr Abdel Aty met on Wednesday with Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, on the sidelines of the African-European Ministerial Meeting held in Brussels. Abdel Aty praised the distinguished bilateral relations between Egypt and Cyprus and emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the political momentum generated following the two fruitful summits held in January 2025 in Cairo, both bilaterally between Egypt and Cyprus and the tripartite summit among Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece. He pointed out to the importance of activating all agreements and memoranda of understanding signed during the last two bilateral and tripartite summits, as well as previous summits, especially the labor agreement signed between the two countries, expressing his aspiration to raise the level of relations to broader horizons in various fields. The Egyptian foreign minister praised Cyprus' support for Egypt in various European Union institutions, particularly with regard to the European financial package provided to Egypt. He expressed his aspiration to intensify cooperation during the Cypriot presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2026, particularly amid the elevation of relations between Egypt and the European Union to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The two ministers exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of common interest, most notably the Palestinian issue. Abdel Aty briefed his Cypriot counterpart on Egypt's efforts to restore the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Egypt and Zambia Discuss Strategic Cooperation in Brussels
H-Tayea On the sidelines of the African-European Ministerial Meeting in Brussels, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Zambian counterpart Mulambo Haimbe to discuss advancing bilateral cooperation and building on the momentum of recent high-level engagements. Minister Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to strengthening ties with Zambia, particularly following the successful state visit of Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema to Egypt in February 2025. He called for the development of a clear roadmap to implement the outcomes of that visit, especially in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, energy, renewable energy, agriculture, and healthcare. The Egyptian Foreign Minister underlined the need to enhance trade exchange between the two countries and encouraged efforts to increase the presence of Egyptian products in Zambian markets, leveraging both countries' membership in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Minister Abdelatty also welcomed ongoing coordination between Egypt's Arab Contractors Company and Zambia's Ministry of Infrastructure on joint development projects, and praised the current level of health sector collaboration between the two nations. The two ministers agreed on the importance of continued coordination in regional and international organizations, particularly the African Union, to promote shared African interests and ensure unified positions on key continental issues.
