Community summit held to discuss Northeast Tennessee's music economy

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Regional and state leaders dove into Northeast Tennessee's music economy at a community summit in Kingsport on Thursday. 'Northeast Tennessee has a very rich tradition of music in this region, and we want to make sure that we're taking full advantage of that musical heritage to allow for our music ecosystem in this region to grow,' Jimmy Wheeler, Tennessee Entertainment Commission director of business development, said. Last year, East Tennessee State University launched the 'Northeast Tennessee Music Census.' Several roundtables were held at the event to provide an opportunity for music creators, venue operators, educators, industry professionals and more to contribute perspectives. 'We have a great base and a lot to build on and Northeast Tennessee is the first region in our state that we've done this music census in, and we felt like we had a great group of people to help lead us in that in that census,' Wheeler said. A student-led discussion with former Douglass High School alumni, a historical presentation by Calvin Sneed and more were part of the event. 'That's what makes it so special,' Scales said. 'The ones that are that are here today, they lived it. They gave us firsthand accounts of what it was like.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
